a note to the teacher…

Teaching about Columbus Day Columbus Day can be a hard concept for students to grasp at a young age – many adults don’t know the true story of Columbus! The important message to get across on the second Monday of October for young learners is that Christopher Columbus was an explorer who found a new way to get from the Old World to the New World. I suggest reading aloud books about Christopher Columbus and having a discussion about why explorers were an important part of history. The printable reader included in this download is meant to be used as a supplemental resource. Read the text with your students and give them time to color the pages. Even if your students cannot read the text, the pictures may help to serve as visual cues about the facts of Columbus Day.

For Extra Fun… Try creating a sailor hat – you will need a large piece of construction paper for each student. 1. Fold the paper in half 2. Fold each side down to make triangles 3. Fold one bottom f lap up 4. Flip the hat over and fold the other bottom f lap up *Optional tape to secure the hat
