    the en d of World War I, th e U.S. Army Corps of En gineer s recallsthe dedicat ion and sacrifices of its engineer soldiers, officers,andcivilians.

    The U.S. Army Corps of

    Engineers provided diverse militaryser vices du rin g World War I. The

    Corps formed the large

    engineer regiments of the Americancombat divisions. Army engineersbuilt port facilities, roads, and

    T h e E n g i n e e r s

    The U.S. Army engineers whoserved in World War I brought withthem varied military experience,

    Most senior officers were graduatesof the Military Academy.These Regular Army engineershad devoted most of their careersto supervising domestic river andharbor improvements, althoughmany had also served with U.S.Army units abroad, primarily in

    Cuba or the Philippines.

    Other commanders who hadbeen civilian engineers joinedthe National Guard or OfficersReserve Corps shortly before theUnited States entered the war.

    But most of the 240,000 engineers

    who served in Europe during the war

    The 20th Engineers, the U.S.

    Armys lar gest regiment , andoth er Amer ican forest ry t roops in

    Fr ance produced some 200 millionboard feet of lumber, 4 million

    ra ilroad ties, and t housands oftimber piles. Lieut enant Colonel

    Henry Graves, on leave as th eChief Forester of the U.S. Forest

    Service, helped organ ize the effort .By October 1918 American forest ry

    engineers were opera ting 107sawmills, primar ily in sout hern

    Soldiers from the 7th Engineers,5th Division, won recognition forbridging the River.

    Major William Hoge, Jr., earneda distinguished service cross forhis heroism in reconnoitering asite for a ponton bridge across thatwell-defended waterway north of

    France. While underenemy observation and artilleryfire, Hoge selected the bridgesite during the daylight hours ofNovember 4, 1918, and directedconstruction of the bridgethat night.

    After German destroyedthree ponton boats supporting thebridge, Sergeant Eugene Walker;Corporal Robert Crawford; andPrivates Noah John Hoggle,and Stanley Murnane jumped intothe icy river and held up the deckof the bridge until replacementpontons were launched and installed.These enlisted men also receivedthe distinguished service cross.

    This bridge was one of 38constructed by U.S. Army engineersduring the criticaloffensive, which ended withGermanys surrender.
