Come Home to FamilyA Monthly Publication of the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church
Today, we celebrate in a special way the resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. The resurrection is more than a historical fact; it should be a personal reality. When Jesus was crucifi ed on Friday, all hope seemed to be lost. Little did we understand that this awful happening, the death of Jesus, was necessary to bring to you and me real hope. God was bringing His plan of redemption to center stage. I must admit that on the day Jesus died, it did not look like any plan. It looked like failure. But God was actively moving forward His master plan. In the midst of this darkness, the darkness of the loss of hope comes the resurrection. God dissipates the darkness with the brilliance of the resurrection. On that wonderful Sunday morning when God raised Jesus, God put hope within our reach. Hope is what lifts us from our despair and breaks the chains of our past. Hope brings us into a right relationship with God. It is this resurrection hope that grants new life. Through the resurrection, we have the hope of eternity with God. This is the hope that God places within our reach. The distance between our dismal situation and this life changing hope is faith. We must place our confi dence in what

Deacon’s LessonAuthentic Relationships
Lesson 7: Lightening the Load
Goal: Build Authentic Relationships by Reestablishing the Art of “One Anothering.”
Objective: Provide Scriptural support for Lightening the Load for Others
Overview: Wayne Jacobsen in his book Authentic Relationships uses the expression “Lightening the Load” to speak of practical ways to help others face the demands of life.2 While many Christians struggle with genuine ways to strengthen and bring new believers to Christ, at the same time people throughout our society are burdened with hardships and need to experience the love of Jesus through others to lighten their load. Our demonstration of lightening the load for others requires a hands-on approach. This way we represent God’s love and give comfort to people during diffi cult times. “Jesus never thought it beneath him to serve people in simple and practical ways. Love will cause us to put the need of others above our own and to do so joyfully.”
We must be ready and willing to serve others as an expression of God’s love for us and others. Our support in lightening the load for others ought to refl ect sincerity, as we minister to their needs. For the unsaved, our acts of kindness can help prepare them to accept the invitation offered by Jesus. Jesus has all we need. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall fi nd rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30 KJV)
Most greetings among Christians are the same cordial expressions of the world “Hello, how are you?” There is seldom another expression that initiates an opportunity to lighten someone’s load. Consider asking someone about their general day-to-day needs or state of affairs. Share something about yourself and how you were helped to engage their participation in the discussion. Be prepared to offer support if needed. There are people everywhere who need help fi nding employment, while others would simply appreciate an occasional ride or travel assistance, cost saving ideas or support for their children.
Everyone has needs, but not every need can be met by another person. Sometimes when people are going through challenging times they don’t always need someone to solve the problem. They may only need someone to listen and be there for them. God has blessed us to receive meaningful help from other people during diffi cult times. It is God’s will that we help others with burdens. Start by thinking about reciprocating the same support you received when someone lightened your heavy load.
“Bear ye one another’s burdens, and so fulfi ll the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2 KJV)
We should also focus on building each other up in the faith. Encourage one another in Christ that we may grow spiritually and be more intimate with Him. One of the ways we can build each other up is by sharing the Word of God and telling what God is doing in our lives. This will provide spiritual nourishment to others and deepen the fellowship.
Jesus has given His followers a mandate to bear fruit for our Heavenly Father. Among the fruit of the Spirit are love, kindness, patience, gentleness, and goodness. [Galatians 5: 22-23] Since, God has blessed us so that we can fulfi ll His will, we ought to fi nd ways to demonstrate the fruit toward others with genuine sensitivity and compassion. What a joy it is to serve!

Resurrection Hopeconclusion
God has done for us through Jesus in order to have this hope come alive in our hearts. What is faith? A simple but profound answer to this question is found in this acrostic on the word “faith”: Forsaking All I Trust Him. We must forsake all the things we think can deliver us. We must trust and rely on the fi nished, completely suffi cient work of Jesus without reservation. We must place all our weight on the truth of the resurrection. When we do this, we will discover a personal resurrection of hope in our lives.
My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness. I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
When Darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace. In every high and stormy gale, my anchor holds within the veil.
His oath, his covenant, his blood supports me in the whelming fl ood. When all around my soul gives way, he then is all my hope and stay.
When he shall come with trumpet sound, O may I then in him be found! Dressed in his righteousness alone, faultless to stand before the throne!
On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand; all other ground is sinking sand.
Shalom,Pastor Nathan Johnson
Calvary Covers It AllA few months ago, we celebrated Christmas, not Santa Claus and his reindeer, but the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Christmas is a perfect time to tell the world about the true meaning of Christmas. Jesus is the reason for the season. Well, if you missed that opportunity, it’s not too late because here comes Peter Cotton Tail hopping down the bunny trail -- hippity hop – Easter is on its way. What is the true meaning of Easter? Is it bunnies, or pastel colors? Is it coloring eggs or dressing up in new clothes and going to church? No, it’s none of those things. Easter is the story of Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for us. It’s the story of how Jesus paid for our sins by the shedding of His blood on Calvary. Easter is that great day we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection and His victory over death and the grave.
Without the sacrifi cial death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we would not have the gift of eternal life. It is up to those who have put their trust in Jesus Christ and His fi nished work on Calvary to tell the good news of the gospel. Just think about it. If someone were standing on the corner passing out free money, we would probably want to tell ev-eryone. Well, Jesus is offering the free gift of salvation and that’s worth more than all the money in the world. The real meaning of Easter can only be told by the redeemed, the saints who are the body of Christ, the Church.
It may be fun to color eggs, buy new clothes and chocolate bunnies, as long as one knows the true meaning of Easter. There are so many people who do not know Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior. We have family, coworkers, friends and neighbors who need to hear our story and how God saved us. They need to know God loves them and is waiting for them to say, “Yes,” to His perfect plan for their lives. John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” We must tell the gospel of Jesus Christ to all who will listen and reveal the true meaning of Easter.“Far dearer than all that the world can impart, Was the message that came to my heart; How that Jesus alone for my sin did atone, and Calvary covers it all. Calvary covers it all, My past with its sin and stain; My guilt and despair Jesus took on Him there, and Calvary covers it all.” written by Sister Walter O. Taylor
We encourage you to IDENTIFY, PRAY, WITNESS, & INVITE (IPWI) 12 unsaved persons in 2012 to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Sis. Voncile Brown-Miller, Chair
person of the Tabernacle Mission-
ary Baptist Church Health Minis-
try, speaks softly but carries a big
message.
It is time for the church
to go to war against a host of dis-
eases disproportionately striking
and killing African-Americans,
Sis. Brown-Miller says. She calls
out the enemy diseases by name –
heart disease/hypertension, diabe-
tes, and cancer.
The good news, Tab’s Health
Ministry preaches, is that strong
doses of education about disease
prevention and other topics are
extremely effective at keeping
people from getting sick in the first
place. Meanwhile, healthy choices
– about diet, exercise, and manag-
ing stress – often keep those who
already have certain conditions
from getting to a crisis situation.
The primary killer diseases in
the African-American community
are often deadly because they are
stealthy, Sis. Brown-Miller says.
“They are called ‘silent killers’
because for a long time, there may
be no signals and then suddenly
they take hold of you,” the Health
Ministry chairperson explained.
“You don’t want to wait until it
gets to that point.
“That’s why we have so many
things happening in our church-
es now in terms of nutrition and
moving away from a sedentary
lifestyle. We are connecting the
issue of spirituality and physical
health.” Pastor Johnson: We Serve God by
Practicing Healthy Habits
The spirituality/health con-
nection is a significant one, says
Tabernacle’s Pastor Nathan John-
son, who urges more members to
join the ministry. He adds that al-
though the ministry could benefit
from the involvement of more doc-
tors, nurses, and other health pro-
fessionals, virtually any Tab mem-
ber can serve in this vital church
ministry.
“The Health Ministry is an ex-
citing ministry because it affords
us an opportunity to practice good
stewardship of our bodies, which
the scripture declares to be the
temple of God,” explains Pastor
Johnson. “Stewardship simply
means how we manage that which
is not ultimately ours but instead
is something which has been en-
trusted to us. Our Health Ministry
helps us to practice good, healthy
habits in order that we may be
able to serve God more effectively
through our bodies.”
Started by former Tabernacle
associate minister Rev. Jeraldine
Jackson, the Health Ministry long
has sponsored and participated in
health fairs, walking events, and
special screening programs tar-
geting illnesses ranging from high
blood pressure to prostate cancer.
The proverbial “get-thee-to-a-
doctor” sentiment may be a good
suggestion, Health Ministry mem-
bers say, but the advice doesn’t al-
ways work.
“We know there are lots of
people who don’t have insurance,”
said Sis. Brown-Miller. “And there
are a lot of people who have insur-
ance and still don’t go to a doctor.
We try to make it convenient for
individuals to get the basic infor-
mation. That’s why we do the
screenings and health fairs and
demonstrations.”
Staying way ahead of health
problems means “knowing your
numbers,” Health Ministry mem-
bers emphasize. Critical “num-
bers” include readings of blood

pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar,
and, for men, the PSA level. Tab-
ernacle has equipment and am-
ple volunteers to handle certain
screenings, such as blood pressure.
For more comprehensive screen-
ings, the Health Ministry has
partnered with Henry Ford Hos-
pital, the Detroit Medical Center,
and other hospital systems. The
ministry has also teamed up with
CVS, the American Cancer Society,
the National Kidney Foundation
and several other corporations and
agencies to provide free-of-charge
screenings.
At health fairs and special
screening events, Health Ministry
volunteers go beyond simply re-
cording screening results. Based
on what the numbers reveal, they
make critical referrals.
“We understand that everyone
may not have a primary physi-
cian,” Brown Miller says, “but we
give them a referral to a physician
that will follow up with them be-
cause if you have screenings with
no follow-up, that’s no good.”
Voncile Brown-Miller is a certi-
fied health educator trained at the
Michigan State University School
of Nursing. She worked for sev-
eral years with the Great Lakes
Division of the American Cancer
Society, focusing on communities
throughout Michigan and Indi-
ana. Even before she became chair
of Tabernacle’s Health Ministry
six years ago, she was at the fore-
front of a burgeoning movement
to take the gospel of better health
practices into African-American
churches.
The Health Ministry Commit-
tee, which currently has 14 mem-
bers, also partners with virtually
all other Tabernacle ministries, in-
cluding culinary arts, to promote
healthy living, Sis. Brown-Miller
said. The Old Coffee Hour is not What it Used
to beLongtime Tabernacle mem-
bers don’t have to look far to see
the impact of Tab’s eight-year-old
Health Ministry. They can simply
take an after-church stroll through
fellowship hall.
The old coffee hour – anchored
by cake, cookies and syrupy sweet
punch – is not what it used to be.
These days, tables once
stocked almost exclusively with
pastries and sugary drinks are los-
ing ground fast to carrots, apples,
oranges, and nuts.
“If you go into coffee hour,
you see a change – there are more
healthy choices,” says Sis. Brown-
Miller. “There are many people in
the church who have conditions
that make it imperative that they
avoid things like doughnuts and
soft drinks…food and drinks like
that are very harmful to them.
And for those who don’t have
those conditions, it may be okay
to have an occasional cookie or a
doughnut, but it’s always good to
have healthy choices. We need to
eat to live, and statistics show that
when people have healthy choices
– perhaps smoothies, popcorn, or
nuts – they will often choose them
over cake, cookies, and pop.”
People are making better
choices, Sis. Brown-Miller says,
- April, 2012 -
and evidence of the trend can be
found in an analysis of leftovers in
fellowship hall. Often, Sis. Brown-
Miller reports, fruits and raw veg-
etables are depleted after coffee
hour while large quantities of cake
are left over. A Very Red Sunday
Tab members recently got a
crimson eyeful of the Health Min-
istry’s reach. Pastor Johnson sev-
eral weeks ago issued a clarion call
from the pulpit asking members to
wear red on March 18 to demon-
strate support for the Health Min-
istry’s participation in a national
campaign focusing on women and
heart disease. The response was a
virtual red sea of red dresses, red
ties, even a red blazer or two illu-
minating the sanctuary as well as
the issue of heart disease.
“This was the third time we’ve
done it, and it was a good re-
sponse,” Sis. Brown-Miller said.
“I think our congregation is health
savvy.”
The hypertension/high blood
pressure point emphasized by the
sea of red was well-taken, Sis.
Brown-Miller said. Tab members
and visitors lined up to have their
blood pressure taken. One young
man, who used to have a primary
physician but does not currently
have one, had been without medi-
cation for a month. Volunteers saw
a red flag during blood pressure
screening.
“He had some issues, and we
were able to give him a referral to
Covenant Care, one of our feder-
ally qualified community health
centers,” recalled Sis. Brown-Mill-
er. “We stressed the importance of
follow-up and of getting back on
his medication.” Next Up: Tab’s May
19 Health Fair …and Plans for a Regular Walking
FellowshipPastor Johnson and Sister Von-
cile urge Tab members to make
their health a priority by marking
their calendars for May 19. The
church’s health fair is set for that
date and will feature screenings
and a strong lineup of guest speak-
ers. Later in the year, Sis. Brown-
Miller hopes to encourage more
walking fellowship at Tab, includ-
ing inviting members to walk reg-
ularly on or near church grounds.
“Walking at pretty much a
normal pace can make a big dif-
ference in weight and overall
health,” Sis. Brown-Miller said.
“Just walking my dog twice a day,
I recently lost 25 pounds. We have
people who walk regularly, and it’s
always good to do it as a group.
Sometimes, walking in the neigh-
borhood is not feasible or safe, so
why not start a group that regu-
larly walks at the church? Taber-
nacle is blessed to have the space.
It’s all about just doing it.”
Tab already has distinguished
itself as a walking congregation.
In a Blue Cross Blue Shield of
Michigan competition last year,
more than 100 Tab walkers helped
the church finish first in the large
church category – that’s “large”
as in the number of church mem-
bers, Sis. Brown-Miller cautions.
Participants were charged with
increasing their walking and urged
to walk at least 30 minutes a day.
Many Tab members exceeded the
30-minute recommendation and
- Special Ministry Pull-Out Section -
faithfully recorded their daily
walking.
Sis. Brown-Miller does not un-
derstate the challenges involved in
stepping up one’s performance on
the individual health front. She
says another effort the Health
Ministry is developing involves
exchanging recipes and hosting
demonstrations of how to prepare
healthier versions of traditional
dishes, including soul food.
“We have to start talking a
little more out loud and to one
another about the various health
conditions we have and seek out
support,” the Health Ministry
chairperson concluded. “I know
we have people struggling with
diabetes, for example, and not
taking insulin when they are sup-
posed to or following their doctor’s
orders. But then there are those
who are compliant. I’m thinking
that succeeding is a combination
of prayer, discipline, and support.
“The spirituality-health tie
recognizes that God has given us
the provision to do what we need
to do. That’s how we access the
power to do the right thing.”
