Operation Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations
around the world through gift-filled shoe boxes and the
Good News of God’s love. Here are the steps to follow
so that you can make a difference in the lives of those
children:
Gospel Opportunity (GO) boxes—Empty GO
boxes will be passed out at both worship services
on Sunday, October 22. Simply fill the box and
most important, pray for the child who will receive
your gift.
Boy or Girl?—Determine whether your gift will be
for a boy or a girl, and the child’s age category: 2-
4, 5-9, or 10-14. Use the appropriate boy/girl label
from the brochure. Mark the correct age category
on the label, and tape the label on the top of your
box.
Fill with Gifts—Fill the box with a variety of gifts
that will bring delight to a child. We’ve listed gift
suggestions to give you some ideas.
Include your donation—Please donate
$7 (checks are recommended and
should be made out to Samaritan’s
Purse) or more for each shoe box you prepare to
help cover shipping and other project costs. If you
or your family are preparing more than one shoe
box, please make one combined donation. Please
do not put your check inside your box but turn it in
separately.
Drop off— Place a rubber band around each
closed shoe box and drop them off at worship on
October 29, or November 5 or in the church
office by November 9.

Big Fish/ Little Fish/Minnows
Wednesdays from 5:30-7:15 PM
The “fish” program is for ages 3-5th grade!
We are working on our Christmas Cantata which will be performed
on Sunday, December 10th! We would love to have your little one
involved and a part of this awesome performance!
Starting this Sunday, October 1, Children's Church at the 11 am service will be suspended until further notice. At this time, we do not have enough volunteers to continue the Children's Church ministry. This was a joint decision by the Director of Programming, Pastor, and the current volunteer team. We will re-evaluate the need and volunteer availability in 3 months. Until then, we will continue with Children's Time in the service, and the children will return to sit with their familes for the duration of the service. We will continue to have coloring pages and activity sheets available for the children before the start of each service.
As always, please continue to pray for all of the ministries at Trinity. Thank you for your understanding.
Again this year, one of our mission projects for Christmas will include providing $25 Walmart, Target, OR Kohl’s gift cards for each of our children who calls Epworth home.
Our goal is to send a total of 100 gift cards. We are beginning to collect them now in the church office. If you prefer, you may make a monetary donation and the cards will be purchased for you. This year we extend a special invitation to our Sunday School classes to adopt this project as their special Christmas project.
Thank you for continuing to contribute to the lives of these our children and this mission of the United Methodist church in S.C.

A Prayer for Pumpkin People After Liz Curtis Higgs wrote the popular children’s book The Pumpkin Patch Parable, people began using her analogies to say a prayer while carving their Halloween pumpkins. The pumpkin prayer, a Christian alternative to Halloween traditions, reminds people of all ages what God has done for us. Use it this fall when your family makes jack-o’-lanterns. • While cutting off the top of the pumpkin, pray, “Lord, open my mind so I can learn new things about you.” (See Proverbs 1:7.) • While removing the seeds and pulp, pray, “Remove the things in my life that don’t please you. Forgive the wrong things I do, and help me forgive others.” (See Matthew 6:14-15.) • While making eyes, pray, “Open my eyes to see the beauty you’ve made in the world around me.” (See Psalm 104:24.) • While making the nose, pray, “I’m sorry for the times I’ve turned up my nose at your many gifts.” (See James 1:17.) • While making the mouth, pray, “Let everything I say please you.” (See Psalm 19:14.) • While lighting the candle, pray, “Lord, help me show your light to others through the things I do.” (See Matthew 5:16.) After carving your pumpkins, display them as examples of how God’s love transforms us into new creations. (See 2 Corinthians 5:17.)

Reformation milestone: celebration and repentance
October 31, 2017, marks the 500th anniversary of the start of
the Protestant Reformation, when Martin Luther posted his “95
Theses” on a church door in Germany. This wasn’t an unusual
act at the time; Luther was simply welcoming scholarly debate.
But his ideas opposing certain teachings and practices of the
Roman Catholic Church led to a monumental shift in
Christianity.
Along with other reformers, Luther taught that Scripture is the
supreme authority for the believer; that salvation comes by
grace alone, through faith alone; and that baptism gives all full access to God in Christ (“the
priesthood of all believers”), so there’s no need for an intermediary such as a pope, priest or saint.
Initially, the reformers intended not to leave the Catholic Church but to reform it. But those who
protested church practices became known as Protestants, and eventually, multiple denominations
arose — Lutheranism, Presbyterianism, Anglicanism and others — and did, in fact, separate from
the Roman tradition.
Sadly, woven amid the good intentions to rightly teach and live the faith were sins on all sides:
Luther hurled insults “with the best of them”; the pope excommunicated him and had other reformers
executed; the beliefs and faith of theological opponents were regularly disparaged. As Heinz Josef
Algermissen, a present-day Roman Catholic bishop in Germany, states: “In commemorating the
Reformation, we cannot just see it as a jubilee, but should also admit our guilt for past errors and
repent on both sides for the past 500 years.”
