LETTERS FROM A PASTOR TO HIS PEOPLE ·JANUARY 22, 2017

Dear Parishioners, This upcoming Wednesday, January 25th is a very inter-es ng feast day in our Church. We celebrate 'The Conver-sion of Saint Paul the Apostle.' I'm sure you're all familiar with the story of how Saul fell off his horse on the road to Damascus. If not, read Acts 9:1-22. It's interes ng that a feast day is centered around a saint's conversion. Typically a feast day is about the saint's en re life, and is celebrated on the supposed date of the individual's death or birth. Paul does have another feast day - June 29th - but this par-

cular event in Paul's life was so monumental the Church believed it necessary to give it a separate feast. Paul's con-version was a miracle and, arguably, the most important miracle in history. Without Paul Catholicism does not spread to Europe and broaden. It remains a progressive sect of Judaism confined to Pales ne. Much of our set of beliefs, not to men on much of our Bible, does not exist without the man formerly known as Saul. Paul is important on a macro level, yes, but he can also be a model for us personally. Life was not easy for Paul. He was beaten, slandered, imprisoned, exiled, ship-wrecked, and, ul mately, beheaded. But he never quit the race. He never lost his zeal for preaching the truth. He constantly pleaded with the various groups he encoun-tered to follow the ways of Christ. Just observe his passion in the opening line of our second reading today, his le er to the Corinthians: "I urge you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree in what you say, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and in the same pur-pose" (1 Cor 1:10). Unity was crucial for the early church, and Paul was adamant that Chris ans overcome their li le differences and stay united. Peter and Andrew, as we hear about in our Gospel ac-count (cf. Ma 4:12-23), had the privilege of being called by Jesus while Jesus was s ll living. The apostles were able to be with our Lord physically. They could see him in ac-

on, hear his voice, witness his miracles, and admire his effect on the people. When Peter, later on in his ministry, encountered a difficulty, he could go back to his me with

the Christ and recall what Jesus did, or would have done. Paul had no such luxury. He wasn't called by Jesus to disci-pleship un l a er the Ascension and he only saw our Lord in a flee ng vision. But this did not hold Paul back. He had a deep faith and trust in Jesus. Paul became one of the greatest, if the not the greatest, saint and apostle. If discipleship does not come easy for you and if your faith brings you on hard mes or makes you unpopular, then St. Paul is your man. Thank you, Paul, for ge ng up off your horse and following Jesus Christ. During the homily at all the Masses this weekend we will be reading a le er from Cardinal Cupich about Renew My Church. Our grouping is Queen of All Saints, Saint Juliana Parish and Saint Mary of the Woods Last night, Saturday, was the Mother's Club Big Night Out in our gymnasium. The Mother's Club did a great job hos ng a very fun evening. Thank you especially to the heads of the Mother's Club, Joanna Drzich and Marilyn Flood, for this party and for all the other ac vi es, fund-raisers, and services they provide for the school and parish. Sunday, January 22nd, is the 44th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision. Please keep in your prayers all vic ms of abor on. May we respect life from concep on un l natural death. The annual March for Life held in Washington DC is this Friday, January 27th. The Archdiocese of Chicago held its own March for Life here in the city last Sunday. In between basketball games, I'll look forward to mee ngs this week with a variety of our parish groups, including the Pastoral Council, Missionary Spirit Team, and the Senior Networking Group. Finally, we are in the middle of the Week of Chris-

an Unity. The week began last Wednesday and ends, fi ngly, on January 25th. We pray that all Chris an domi-na ons may overcome their differences and be united in the one Church of Jesus Christ—something St. Paul would have wanted. Yours in Christ, Father James

THE TASSEL OF THE CLOAK James F. Wallace In this week of Chris an Unity I think it is most fi ng to speak about our Blessed Mother. She is a point of unity for all Chris an denomina ons. You might be thinking, "Huh, really? Isn't Mary an issue on which Protestants diverge from Catholics? Aren't Catholics accused of 'worshipping Mary' and so forth?" Perhaps, but this accusa on isn't an accurate representa on of genuine Protestant thought. The Protestant Reformers had a tremendous respect for Mary. Zwingli called Mary "the highest of creatures next to her Son," as well as the "Mother of God." Other Reformers, especially Mar n Luther, affirmed and asserted her per-petual virginity. Luther wrote, "in childbirth and a er childbirth, as she was a Virgin before childbirth, so she remained." In his Book of Concord (1580) that was the official statement of faith of the Lutheran church, Lu-ther wrote: "Mary, pure, holy, and Ever-Virgin." This virginity, by the way, would also be a model for the "Virgin Queen" Elizabeth in Protestant Eng-land. Beyond doctrine, there was also warmth towards Mary held by Protestants. Luther wrote a Commentary on the Magnificat in which he closed with the following: "May Christ grant us this through the interces-sion and for the sake of His dear Mother Mary! Amen." The Reformers praised Mary for her tremendous faith. In fact, she was the model of faith. "Faith alone" (sola fide) was one of the mo oes of the Reforma on, and Mary embodied this principal, especially in the Annuncia on. It was her faith in God that allowed her to say yes and obey, thus saving her and the world. She was, according to Luther, "blessed and endowed with eve-ry kind of grace." May we imitate Mary's faith and may our Blessed Moth-er unite all Chris ans.

G C FAQ #3

Won’t it look odd if I don’t put any-thing in the Sunday collec on bas-ket? Many people donate online or write just one offering check per month, so it’s becoming quite common to see pa-rishioners pass by the offering basket. If you’d be more comfortable drop-ping something in the basket, we have printable notes available from the parish office and online at give.stjuliana.org. If you haven’t yet registered with www.givecentral.org for secure online dona ons, please do so today! Con-tact the parish office (773.631.4127 or email [email protected]) for assis-tance.
