DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

The CEFA is an urban school, in the town center of Namur. There are +/- 375 students between 15 and 21 year old.

It’s a vocational training school, mainly in industry and building. The students are two days in the school and three days with their boss. Many young people who come to CEFA are school leavers. The “alternation” training is our way to fight school leaving.

The CEFA was a partner in two Comenius projects, with French, Spanish and Italian schools. And we participated in many Leonardo mobility projects.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

We are still involved in the fight against early school leaving, but we want to go further.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

We hope to exchange good practices. We have a long experience with young students who are not interested in the life at school, but we still have problems with early school leaving. We hope to learn of other practices in other countries.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

8 teachers and 128 students

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

Our school is urban, in the town of Larnaca. It’s the second oldest school in our town. There are about 95 teachers and 610 students, their ages ranging from 15 to 18. Most of our students come from the town and neighbouring villages. A lot of them are refugees from the occupied area of Cyprus. We also have a lot of political refugees attending our school either as listeners or proper students, mostly coming from Arabic countries. Our students come from middle class families.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

Early school leaving is an urgent and serious problem, both for individuals and society as a whole. All the parties involved (ministry of education, teachers, and parents) work together to reduce the number of pupils who drop out before the end of secondary education.

Although the situation may vary in different countries, our school will make an attempt to look into the reasons that lead to early school leaving. Socio-economic background of early school leavers, family pattern and support are among the most important issues that will be examined. Additionally, we will try to examine whether there is a difference in the rate of school leaving between male and female students. Also, we will look into learning difficulties, social problems lack of motivation, guidance or support.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

Low levels of education do not only have severe consequences for the young people concerned, but also high

economic and social costs for society as a whole. Although there are no easy answers to the problem, there

are several measures to be taken. Strategies to prevent dropping out, or at the least to support young people

re-entering education, must address both education and social policy.

We have come up with some ideas the implementation of which may contribute to the alleviation of the

11

problem. Preventive measures can include a wide range of measures such as providing high quality early

childhood education and care to give children a good start into education. Schools should be turned into

encouraging places for all pupils and provide pupils with individual support when needed. In addition, young

people who dropped out of education and training need to get a second chance in a learning environment

which addresses their specific needs and helps them to re-gain confidence in learning.

Specifically, more emphasis should be given to the students of Class A’ (age 15) as they are at the age that they

can drop out of school. A specialist will give them a presentation on the consequences of early school leaving

so as to deter them from that thought. Partnerships between schools and community based agencies will be

encouraged so as students experience an integrated model of education. Another idea is to work with families,

particularly outside of the school and outside of school hours offering individual and family counselling, group

work, and support programme. Also, we will prepare a questionnaire in order to examine attitudes and beliefs

towards the issue.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

We would like to involve about 5-6 teachers and a group of 20 students

Past projects: Comenius 1.1 (pv5-076) Web Magazine

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

We would like to motivate out students to stay in the education system and open their eyes so they will realize

that it is desirable to study and take a longer education. We want our students through communication and

cooperation with peers from other cultures and countries will gain insight into other educational opportunities

and roads. We want students to work on issues related to further education and life capability.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

In Denmark the citizens are very much protected by the welfare system we have, but unfortunately that also

means that some youngsters can’t see the importance of education, because “they will manage anyway”. We

would like to show out students how important education is in other countries and how it could be a ticket

away from a life you wouldn’t want to live. We suggest that it could be through online contact with students

from other countries, where they can share information about possible education choices.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

We think we would like to involve about 5 teachers and the next year’s 9th graders, which consists of about 50

students. In the part of the school where we have the older students (7th – 9th grade) we have 200 students

and 14 teachers.

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

The school is situated six kilometres from the centre of Odense. There are almost 600 pupils and about 50 teachers at the school. The pupils come from very different socio-economic backgrounds. The school has a rate of approximately 9% of pupils with another mother language than Danish. These pupils are often at risk of not staying in the educational system.

This year a group of pupils in the 9th grade are participating in a Comenius-project exchanging experience with schools from Finland, England and Spain. The project finishes next summer.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

Having pupils coming from very different socio-economic backgrounds, our school meets a great challenge in taking care of every pupil the right way, so that all the pupils are ready both personally and academically to start an education after finishing the ground school. In order to do so, we would like to develop the cooperation between the parents, the school, the pupil and the educational-guide in the school district. We are currently working on a project developing a school where the adolescents can maintain their curiosity and their desire to keep on learning. In order to do so, the school needs to show the pupils the link between the school and “The real life” and to show them the opportunities in the educational system. this is a project for all the pupils, but it is extremely important that we take special care of the pupils coming from non- or not well educated families.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

With the pupils involved in this project we wish to develop best-practise examples of how to guide the pupils at risk so they can stay in the educational system.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve? 21 pupils and 1 teacher

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

Our school is located in agricultural area of western Finland with some agriculture related industry. We have about 200 students with 20 teachers. We have been very active with all types of international projects. We have our own course of Multiculture with a new country as a theme every year. We have taken part as a partner in two Comenius projects so far, first “Think for the Future” in 2008-2010 and “Let’s Play Ecoomics” from 2010 to 2012. In 2010 we also visited Euroscola in Strasbourg and there has been science projects with CERN in Switzerland. In our area we see international exchange not just an opportunity but also an eye-opener for our students. We like to do a lot of team work here and we have a good number of teachers involved with projects. The level of participation of our students is very high, and unfortunately we cannot take all the students for the projects.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

We have been thinking a project with connects our students who study mainly for academic studies to real working life. This could be done via mining industry that is rising up not only in our region but in Finland and Europe as a whole. In this project we would measure mining industry with its economical output (employment, development, economical side-effects etc.), impact on environment, impact on cultural life like arts and of course scenery for example after closing down of a mine.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop? We select few mines around our area, new and old ones, and make case studies of them. We will divide our project so that for every meeting we choose a different theme. For example, we and all partners study the economical impact of our mine and compare the results. Then we will measure the environmental issues like pollution and so on. During our visit we would visit one the mines and of course interact with each other in cultural events. Between our meetings we will inform and do the tasks by eTwinning tools or by a common website. Selection depends the skills of our partners. The participating students could see through the project

15

a wide selection of possible professions for their career in this industry that has been in decline for decades but it’s now coming back. With our multiangle looking we can realize it is not just mining work, but cultural, economical and environmental professions too that are available.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve? If we are chosen as coordinator, we will take 6 teachers. If not, there will be just 5. Number of students will be between 15 and 20 depending the amount of mobilities in our application.

Please state if you are looking for partners from a specific country: We would like to have one country from southern Europe (Spain, Italy, Greece), one from the western part (France, Netherlands, Belgium, UK), two from central Europe (Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia) and one from the eastern central Europe (Romania, Poland, Bulgaria). We and possibly a partner from Sweden or Denmark would represent the Nordic countries.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

10 professeur – 72 élèves – 1 directeur de S.E.G.P.A. – 1 assistante sociale

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

This is an urban college of 500 pupils aged 11 till 15. English, Spanish and Latin teachers organize every year a travel for some pupils. There is a parternship with Germany, too. One of my colleague and I travelled to Finland in 2008 to observe educational methods from this country. The college used to work with others schools from his area : primary school and lycée on reading (and writing) projects. The college would like to create an European section in 2014 (European class)

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

The main idea of the project is to create several gardens per country whose goals are : - Creating a new, more realistic way of learning for pupils aged 12-13 who intend leaving school early or who

have real learning difficulties. - Increasing motivation and stimulating pupils’ involvement by showing what kind of jobs they can do as a

result of their creations. (garden centre employee, florist, architect, engineer…) - Working on eco-development (water management, recycling…) - Opening pupils’ minds on their own and other cultures by promoting their area and country (aromatic

plants, fruits, art in general…) via the creation of specific and varied gardens (one to show the variety of plants in their area for example, another one to show a French garden…)

- Improving relations between pupils, their families and teachers. - Involving a lot of partners in the project. In this case, pupils are in the centre of the education system and in

the centre of a large International and European project. - Increasing pupils’ self-estime and autonomy via concrete productions which other people from the city

could see. What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

– Our school would like to develop the creation of several gardens. This would involve manual work but also stimulate intellectual capacities (conception of the project etc.). We would like to include all subjects taught in

19

our school and with those of the other countries, too. The relationship between the various countries involved in this project is very important because the aim is to compare gardens created by pupils of the other countries with their own gardens, to see what kind other, wealthier areas have, how others have integrated eco-development etc. We would like to have an on-going exchange between all the partners via internet (mail, skype…) and to have pupils travel to foreign countries to admire “foreign” gardens. In this way, we can improve our language skills (English and Spanish). This would involve using new technology : computers, video, photos… in order to show the different stages of the project and of course the end product. We would very much like to welcome foreign pupils and teachers. All these activities are based on a new way of learning with the aim of showing pupils that they can learn in a different way. Remark : teachers of different subject would participate selectively throughout the year.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

About 10 teachers from one class.(pupils aged 12-13)

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

The Collège des Portes de Fer is an urban school, located in a recently urbanized area, in the far biggest city of New

Caledonia. It’s composed of nearly 800 students, whose multicultural and large ethnic origins create a very stimulating but also complex environment. Part of our children come to the city after a childhood spent in the quite deserted and very green North, or from the Island of Pines, and from the islands of Lifou, Ouvea or Maré, which compose the Loyalty Islands, rather unsullied by any kind of industrial development, and still quite isolated. Il’s often a shock for the teenagers when they have to leave their childhood place, with its imaginary environment, still rich of powerful traditions of the territory, for the city. This urban migration often generates a separation with the nuclear family, and sometimes delinquency, when the kids are abandoned by their foster families, which sometimes happen, because of the difficulty for them of already taking care of the regular children. French is not the mother tongue of most Oceanian people (around 28 languages are present on the territory). Squats are quite numerous in Nouméa, and some of our pupils live there. The district Portes de Fer was recently a calm and easy-to-live-in place, until 5 years ago, when one thousand lodgings were built to accommodate the enlarging flow of people coming down from the North. From a communautarist way of life, people recently and rapidly switched to an individualistic one here in Nouméa, which generated, and still does, a loss of landmarks, and even sometimes acculturation. The problem of early school leaving is thus particularly new in the island. School links were initiated and maintained with nearby countries: Australia and New Zealand particularly. A partnership with the police was signed one year ago, as well as with the Youth and Cultural Center, the Youth Integration Mission, social and health services (inside and outside the school), and families. The aim of all these partnerships is to try and eradicate efficiently early school leaving

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

We have recently started focusing on the new and increasing problem of early school leaving, and would like to take advantage of the Amiens seminary to gather information and ideas on the topic, to exchange with the participants, and share our own particular but new experience with them.

26

In a second time, when back from the seminary, to fuel a real reflection on the topic with the whole school community so as to fight this problem together and place it in our central activities and programmes. What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

Focus on more possible local partnerships, so as to give our pupils a new meaning to their future lives, and to help our school propose motivating perspectives and restore hope for our children suffering from various school or family difficulties, and thus increase the value of school in their minds. Try and work more with the parents. And above all increase the sense of responsibility in all our students, potential early school leaving children as well as successful and motivated ones: we will imagine ways to work with the latter to help the former. We are also having a reflection on the part animals can take in the resolution of early school leaving, and are planning to sign a partnership with one of the three pony clubs present in the area, as well as with a nearby farm, contact with animals seeming an interesting clue to help children practise respect, rules, responsibility and regain confidence in themselves and interest in their school. How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

Teachers, as well as the nurse and social worker, chief supervisor and the whole management team have always been very willing to help our students and are becoming more and more concerned with the recent phenomenon of early school leaving. They are ready to try anything liable to fight against it. We think that we can rely on a good half of our teachers, at the very least. As for the pupils, we will focus on the class representatives, and also try to integrate every one of our pupils willing to be part of our action.

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

Our school is situated in the outskirts of Reims. Our pupils (aged 11 to 15) come from different social backgrounds and about 50% meet social problems. Our school was involved in a Comenius project from 2005 to 2008 related to sustainable development and active citizenship. We got a label of quality for our project called “The world in our hands”. We are still in contact with our Spanish partners and some teachers became good friends. We have created links with a school in the United Kingdom thanks to E-twinning since 2006 and we go and visit our English partner every two years. In our school, French as a foreign language, Spanish, English and Portuguese are taught. A small group of pupils and teachers have been involved since 2010 in a project with Burkina Faso, in Africa. It will end in January 2012.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

We want to share our experience with other European countries and develop new ideas and new systems to help our pupils. We have been developing an area in the school called “la Passerelle”, in English the footbridge where pupils go and are given one-to-one lessons by teachers and pedagogical assistants. We have developed a tutorial system between younger and older pupils, emphasized learning skills in workshops, tried to improve communication between pupils and teachers in the everyday life in the class. We would like to create individual coaching sessions, create better learning conditions by developing co-teaching and co-learning activities. We think that sharing these ideas with European partners would be very stimulating. We would like to create activities to answer to specific learning problems. We also want to work with the families and create closer links with them.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

Just now, we haven’t got a precise idea of the activities that we want to develop, except for reading activities. Our librarian thinks that we could agree on a common reading programme so that our pupils could discover stories from our partners’countries. Our nurse wants to create a “Board game club” to make pupils play together so that they could develop their social skills. Our social worker thinks about activities related to family mediation. Teachers want to reinforce the informal links with the pupils by developing sports activities (badminton). With the “CPE”, some teachers want to develop communicative activities to create a better atmosphere in class. I have the experience of a contact seminar in Poland where we met our partners for our

32

former Comenius project and I’m sure that during the seminar, we’ll have new ideas. We need to develop new strategies to prevent early school leaving and by sharing ideas on a European scale, I’m sure we’ll manage.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

Between 6 to 8 teachers may be involved and as we have 16 classes, we think that more than half of the pupils may be involved in the project, maybe more, plus the pupils from the special needs. Please state if you are looking for partners from a specific country:

Maybe partners from the north of Europe if possible because they are said to be innovative in this area of early

school leaving, from Portugal because this language is taught in our school, but anyway we are ready to

discover any other European school systems and teaching skills.

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

I work at an urban, public educational institution in Heraklio, which has about 600 students in total, aged between 13 and 15 years old. It is the biggest gymnasium in Heraklio, Crete. Every year we implement various cultural and environmental projects, which include the exchange of cultural and educational visits of our students. Also, we cooperate with European organisations from abroad and take part in common activities that require careful coordination as well as team work and reinforce tolerance to difference, develop cultural diversity and strengthen team spirit. THE TARGET GROUP OF MY ORGANISATION CONSISTS OF TEENAGERS AGED BETWEEN 13 AND 18 YEARS OLD. THE MAJORITY OF THEM ARE GREEK, WHO NEED TO KEEP UP WITH ALL THE LATEST DEVELOPMENTS AND RAPID CHANGES, BUT THERE ARE SOME IMMIGRANTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES, AS WELL, WHO TRY TO INTEGRATE SUCCESSFULLY INTO THE MAINSTREAM GREEK SOCIETY. SO, THE MOST IMPORTANT AND AT THE SAME TIME DIFFICULT GOAL OF MY ORGANISATION IS TO CONTRIBUTE TO YOUNG PEOPLE’S GRADUAL DEVELOPMENT AND INDIVIDUAL MATURITY AND TO ENSURE THEIR SOCIAL INCLUSION AND ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN ACHIEVING ALL FORMS OF PROGRESS.

So far, I have taken part in a youth project, concerning the exploration of gender identities and the promotion

of the equality of the sexes. I carried out a challenging project whose purpose was to investigate the factors

that influence and contribute to the formation of gender identity in young people nowadays. In my view, it is

essential to use innovative methods, in order to approach young people, especially those who feel less

privileged and rejected by society, or get more and more isolated, are gradually cut off from the rest of the

world and become marginalized, so that they can be convinced that they can make an important contribution

to youth projects, raise their awareness on global issues and boost their self confidence. Also, last April, I have

participated in an intensive training course about : “Active Participation at local level: Mobility and Activation

of youth, targeted for school dropouts”.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

We would like to conduct a survey that will reflect the reality of early school leaving, investigate the reasons for school dropouts and focus on best practices for the prevention of abandoning school. We mainly would like

36

to incorporate innovative activities that reinforce social inclusion and establish a safe and friendly environment for our students suitable for unfolding their skills and talents and achieving their dreams and goals. It could be useful to start a campaign for the importance of staying on board all the way and the benefits you gain in the end of your educational journey, as opposed to the very high price you may have to pay later on in your adult life if you make the superficial decision to quit school too soon. Needless to say, at a national level what is required is a government policy that places emphasis on lifelong learning and makes private and public educational institutions more responsive to the students’ increasing aspirations, so as to carry out effective interventions on time to tackle the problem successfully.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

A major activity we would like to develop is a questionnaire given to all our students aged from 13 to 15 years old, because children at each age have different priorities and ways of thinking and expressing themselves, so as to offer them the chance to make suggestions and recommendations for future improvement, so that they no longer think they are not taken into consideration and are left out of the decision making process. This questionnaire could be applicable to partner schools of other countries, as well. As soon as our school receives notification about the final outcome of the selection process for a Comenius grant I will send you further details regarding this project we would like to carry out. Our application for a grant has been officially selected for funding, so I am including some more information regarding our potential project. The questionnaire given to the students could focus on two major points: Firstly, “What I have got to offer in my school, in my classmates and in the lessons?” Secondly, “What I want to learn from my school, my classmates and my teachers?” The main aim would be to detect what is lacking from today’s school and what most of the students yearn for, so that we can assure that the students will come first in the new school that is currently being established in Greece by including all different realities of learning approaches in the educational framework and implementing a holistic human rights approach. Hopefully, the process of filling in the questionnaire will initiate more profound thinking and will lead students to the realization that attending school gives them the opportunity to achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams later on in life, so that they will eventually reach the conclusion that if they abandon school they deprive themselves of all that possibility. Through mutual and continuous cooperation with the students we can build bridges of direct communication with them and create the conditions required, in order to remove possible restraints that prevent young people from pursuing their long-term goals and dealing with challenges successfully.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

As many as possible. In particular, all the students in the classes I teach, which are about 250, in total. Even though the three years in gymnasium are considered to be obligatory education in Greece, from time to

time we face the problem of school dropouts, which is very serious. Consequently, I am interested in finding

out effective ways to deal with the issue without causing further family friction. I think we need to come up

with innovative ways to motivate teenagers to attend school, because they really want to and not out of

obligation from the state. We have to make them realise that school is beneficial for their individual

development, so that they can appreciate its social role and pedagogical function. The reasons for school

dropouts may vary, since each individual is unique and this intensifies the problem. For example, students

could quit school due to low achievement or under achievement, lack of purpose and proper orientation or

guidance, failure to adjust in the school environment, discouragement or even suppression from the family

etc.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

For most of them school is the biggest source of knowledge and entertainment. Therefore, students and staff have fewer opportunities to visit interesting places or go abroad. In Plutiskes Secondary school there are 12 pupils that have special educational needs.

About 30% our school’s pupils are from families that need social care. Their parents are jobless and they don't have many possibilities to get it in the future, because they live in a socio-economically disadvantaged area. Our school is located 25 kilometres away from the district centre Kaunas. Babtai is a small town situated by the highway Vilnius-Klaipeda. Its population is 2000 inhabitants. There are forests and the river Nevezis near our small town. Our school is rural, so most of our students are from farmers' families. Some of the farmers are our school supporters. There is Lithuanian Horticultural Institute in Babtai too. Some of our students are from scientists' families. Some students in our school have taken part in and won international science competitions. There are pupils from the foster home which is situated in our town. Lithuania was influenced by economic crisis and the outcome of this - is rising unemployment and welfare recipients' children (about 100 students) and 25 students with special needs. A large number of our students are at risk of social exclusion, because of their families' lack of opportunities to offer their children the possibility to participate in cultural or entertainment activities. In many ways our school is not only an education provider for our students, but it is also a development centre with social, cultural and informative functions.

We develop the European dimension taking in different national and international projects and activities. We took part in multilateral Comenius Project "Save My Energy" in 2007-2009 and Comenius 3 project (Elos: Europe as a Learning Environment in Schools" in 2008 (No.16982). DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

Our school is the only upper secondary school in Vestby, a county with nearly 15000 inhabitants. We are situated 50 kilometres outside Oslo. The pupils have a free choice of schools in the bigger Follo region, so we also get pupils from other counties. We have about 650 pupils (16-19 years of age), and offer both the study program leading to admission to higher education and various vocational programs. Earlier we have participated in various exchange programs, both connected to language and culture and the vocational programs.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do? We would like a common international project together with the lower secondary schools in the Vestby area with focus on early school leaving. We would like to exchange ideas about early school leaving seen in connection with the total picture of 13 years at school and establish a pilot project with participants from two different countries. What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

We would like to develop methods and creative ideas to work against early school leaving, and learn from each other’s more or less successful attempts. For example we could consider a compulsory 10 hour course for parents where we focus on the role of the parent and the importance of cooperation between pupil, parents, school and local community. We wish to welcome representatives from local businesses into our school and initiate a teamwork that can open up for increased use of practical work/work practice for pupils.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

We would like this to be an exchange of teachers, and are not planning to involve pupils at this stage. We want to establish a group of three teachers from each school, one upper secondary and two lower secondary schools.

Please state if you are looking for partners from a specific country:

We wish to cooperate with a country from Eastern Europe, because the (vocational) construction department at our school has previously cooperated with schools in Lithuania through “Nordplus”. Spain is also an option, or Germany, as we have contacts from the “Do it!-project”. This all depends on the contacts that will be established at the seminar

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

“Escola Básica e Secundária de Muralhas do Minho” is a public secondary school located in northern Portugal, in a small town called Valença, a socio-economically disadvantaged area. Our students are between 10-18. Most of our students come from rural areas for that reason they don´t have equal opportunities compared with students from urban centers. In our school there are some students with special education needs who are very well integrated in our ordinary classes. Apart from these ones we have some students who aren't as good as their peers in educational activities and unfortunately we have here some situations of educational failure and school dropping out, because of the lack of participation of parents on their children's educational life. Some of the students are brought up in families with financial problems, in families in which parents are unemployed. We have also students coming from East Europe, South America (Brazil, Colombia, etc...) apart from our local students. So, we think it is extremely important for them to take part in the partnership Comenius, since it can give them the opportunity to travel abroad, communicate with other students from foreign countries, exchange experiences, cultural knowledge, way of seeing life and acquire and improve their language communication skills, among others, as well as giving them a broader vision of the world we live in

.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

My school would like to participate actively in this project, contacting with other experiences that may contribute to a new approach to school dropout; additionally, we would like to gather relevant information in order to tackle the problem, namely through the sharing of good practices to be applied in the school context.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

Our school aims at organizing individual meetings with youngsters so as to identify their concerns and, consequently, devise a support plan that is both adequate and adapted to the youngsters and their families’ needs. The plan would give priority to pedagogical methods based on work with both small groups and individual work (about specific problems) and seminar work. We would like to work on the parent participation and to involve some local authority to encourage teachers and parent work together to ensure better services for children with problems.

57

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

The school will work with around some 20 tutoring teachers and approximately 300 pupils.

Please state if you are looking for partners from a specific country

We are looking for partners which could work together with us to achieve our goals. It could be some partners

from Hungary, France, Italy or Germany. This could be privileged partners.

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

Dacia Technological High School is a public educational institution which gives its students great perspectives on life: good conditions for improving their professional and social skills as well as a well- trained staff that plays an important part in their guidance. Our high school aims to promote students’ involvement in instructive – educational activities as well as in cultural ones because our purpose is to develop their personality, their entrepreneur, artistic and civic spirit. Being located near the centre of Pitesti - the residence town of the Arges county, it attracts its school population not only from all the districts of the town, but also from its neighbouring rural settlements. Not only does my high school offer access to a high-standard education to pupils belonging to different walks of life, but it also provides equal chances to making progress to all the students attending its courses. In addition to this, it is a mixed school even if most of the students we teach are boys. Due to its nearly central position, Dacia Technological High School represented by its manager and staff has a good opportunity to settle agreements with different firms in the technological field; thus the students in our high school can put into practice all the theoretical knowledge they are introduced to during classes. Besides developing their technological skills, we pay much attention to their social and European integration

which is best helped by their mastering of a foreign language, especially English, because it is of much use in all

fields and in all the corners of the world. The entire school population is made up of non-English speaking

students.

Our school has been involved in several eTwinning projects so far both as a coordinator and as a partner. Besides this, we are developing a Multilateral Comenius Project at the moment with 5 other European partners. It is in its second year, so we would be glad if we could set up a new partnership dealing with combating failure in education.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

We want to set up a project addressing 14 to 19 year-old students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds meant to prevent school drop-out and keep in the educational system the students at risk, especially those from rural areas, poor families or having parents that work abroad by means of developing and implementing

59

strategies, measures and specific educational tools. The project will meet the needs of students at risk through their participation in a variety of alternative educational programs with recreational and remedial character which supports them in: getting a minimal level of communication and networking capacity, catching up in learning, facilitating communication with parents working abroad, developing the digital tools as well as social and emotional skills. The project activities will foster the quality of formal and non-formal education in my school by means of improving the school climate. The extracurricular activities in our compulsory curricula will overlap those in the project in order to make students feel comfortable, respected, responsible, confident and motivated to carry on learning. The communicative and networking project activities will produce significant progress in the teacher-student, students-student, student-parent, parent-teacher relationships, thus reducing absenteeism.

What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

WHAT MY SCHOOL WANTS TO FOCUS ON IS A MULTILATERAL PARTNERSIP AIMING AT REDUCING SCHOOL

LEAVING.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

WE WOULD LIKE TO INVOLVE AS MANY STUDENTS AND TEACHERS AS THE GRANT FOR A COMENIUS PARTNERSHIP AFFORDS US. Please state if you are looking for partners from a specific country:

IF POSSIBLE, BUT NOT NECESSARY, WE WOULD LIKE TO COOPERATE WITH: FRANCE, FINLAND, NORWAY,DENMARK, SWITZERLAND, BELGIUM, ITALY, LUXEMBOURG, MALTA, SPAIN, NETHERLANDS, CYPRUS

DESCRIBE BRIEFLY YOUR SCHOOL

We are educating at an urban school but most of the parents are related to any rural region in anyway. We have 680 pupils between the age 7 – 15. We are interested with the comenius projects but we need some guidance.

I am working as an English Language Teacher at Atatürk Secondary School in Amasya in Turkey for 7 years. In addition, I am working as eTwinning Ambassador of Amasya and organize eTwinning activities.

When it comes to the Early School Leaving, we have problems in our school with early school leaving. Our students don't give enough importance to education and they get lower secondary level qualifications. Therefore, they cannot continue to higher education. I really give importance for this problem and I have done much investigation about it. I have studied the books , "A Career Development Curriculum for Secondary School Students" and "Early occupational awareness program". Early School Leaving is not only problem but it is among the most problematic ones and it affects our education targets. I can write a lot of reasons but I want to mention the most important ones and they are the problems that I want to solve or improve. The first reason is our students don't have a global worldview for the future and they don't know what they will have if they go on their education or they don't know what they will lose if they don't. They don't have many people who have targets for the future around them and when we say them you will have a better life conditions and good jobs if you go on higher education, they think that we are telling stories for them. Most of the students' parents don't have any job career, except a few parents, and they earn their's keep difficult to live. So, they cannot guide their children for the future and they cannot see future problems if their children don't go on higher education. Some parents are farmers and they live in villages in certain months of the year. They take their students to the village to help them when they work in the field. The students cannot go to school during these days and they cannot get enough education. The students think that the life is only their village, their homes and their city. I sometimes tell them about other countries, they feel it is impossible to see these countries, also they think it is the same thing to go abroad or to travel the space. Among the our last ten years graduated students, there are a few students go to university. Most of them don't go on university education.

I believe that if we show a target to students for the future, they will certainly want to reach it. As teachers, we should try to improve these problems.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do? & What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

My project topic is " Focus on the future". I target to gain to students future occupational targets and they don't leave the school early. I will introduce occupational opportunities for my students. We will compare these with other countries. I will show them what a doctor does in Turkey and other countries, or any other job, engineers, teachers, managers. I want to create an awareness about the future. Also, I want to add the word "future" to my students' agenda. When I ask my students, what will you do in the future, most of them say " I don't know". This is a very dangerous answer for this question because a young person may do bad things if he/she doesn't know what he/she will do in the future. I need some extra ideas for my project and I am sure I can find better ones if I have chance to attend this contact seminar. There will be a lot of ideas to solve these problems and I need to discuss it with different colleagues. When I checked the seminar agenda, I saw that it is very suitable. I have some ideas but I need extra ones and some partners for my project. I have been trying to contact with schools via internet, it is really difficult to share the ideas , to understand each other, to give different ideas each other, to add something each other via net. I need to face to face communication. I also want to organize an eTwinning project with the same topic.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

We would like to involve at least 20 teachers and 300 students in this project idea.

Our school is an urban school located in Zeytinburnu, one of the most crowded parts of Istanbul. There are approximately 900 students between the age of 14 and 18. We applied for a Comenius project with six partners from different countries last year, however it wasn’t accepted because of the lack of funding. We also applied for Comenius Assistantship as the host school and this application has been accepted and we are going to have a Comenius Assistant from Belgium in January till July 2012.

YOUR PROJECT IDEA ON THE THEME OF EARLY SCHOOL LEAVING

What does your school want to do?

Our students often have attendance problem. There are some reasons for this problem and we always try to figure it out by even getting help from the specialists in this kind of problems. First of all we want to determine the main causes of early leaving school. After that we want to make a plan to follow to deal with the problem. Of course we are sure that this problem cannot be solved only with the efforts of the teachers or the educators but the students themselves and parents also play an important role in the solution of this problem. That’s why we want to attract the attention of both students and their parents and we want to start with informing this target group. We want to determine all the possible causes and then start to work. What kind of activities would your school like to develop?

We want to organize seminars or panels to inform the parents about the importance of education. There may be several reasons of leaving school such as family issues which is very common in our country, where the parents still don’t let their “daughters” go to school because of social and cultural reasons, financial problems or even psychological ones. We want to organise seminars for, especially, the parents to mention each reason and the possible solutions of these causes. Besides, we want to make the students be sure about the importance of education and direct them to the correct school according to their interests and desires. In this way we aim to help students choose the suitable education for themselves and feel happy at school.

How many teachers and pupils would your school like to involve?

First of all, all the teachers in our school want to involve in this work, but officially one teacher will take part in the seminar.
