The origin of the name Oleiros

The name of our town could came from to the Galician word to designate the job ''oleiros'' (potter) that was very important for our village.

Nowadays we celebrate a festival call ''alfaroleiros'' as a tribute of the story of the town. This day potters of many places show their works in a Santa Cruz garden.

The Oleiros economy

It is a residential town in which the business are small only supply the local population, due to the importance of proximity of Coruña, a important city of Galicia. More of the people living in Oleiros go to work or study there.

Oleiros urbanism

The houses are usually single-family ones and the buildings have not more than three floors.

There are a lot of boardwalks, bike lanes and

parks.

We also have public and private schools, museums, gyms, public libraries and one auditorium.

Oleiros landscape

We are a seaside town with a lot of beaches

and green spaces. Three of the eight beaches have a blue flag, this means that are clean and safe beaches.

In the ''parroquia'' where I live (Santa Eulalia de Lians) it is very plane except for the hill that I must walk in my daily school way.

The town council organizes very several cultural and sports activities; like pottery, photograph, traditional dances, radio activities and other special for old people.

The council also helps the schools with cultural excursions.

In summer if you are walking around the Santa Cruz garden you will see posters with photographs. Each year the topic of the photographs changes.

The Three Wise Men (January 6 )

We celebrate the day of the Three Wise Men in which ''if you have been a good boy/girl during all the previous year'', they will give you presents at night. There are a parade along all the town and it finishes in the ''town house'' where are some people giving out pieces of “roscón de Reyes” (as a bagel), the typical sweetmeat of this day.

Carnival

Carnival is very important for us because it lastes a complete week. People go wearing fancy dresses in the streets, and the last day of carnival we organize a dress up parade and finally we burn a puppet doing with old clothes. We also have a typical sweetmeat for this day call ''orellas'' (the translation could be “ears”) and ''filloas'' (something like crepes, but much better).

Page 27: Comenius project. siliva acuña ruano

MagostoIt is a festival day to celebrate the beginning of autumn. The most important are the roasted chestnuts. In the streets you can find people selling hot chestnuts, it is very rewarding in the cold days.

San Juan

In that night the beaches are filled of bonfires. The tradition says that you must light the bonfire after twelve o'clock.

People say that if you burn the old things you will have a good year. As school is finished, students take advantage of this day to burn the last year homework.
