Welcome to the first edition of Council’s Newsletter for 2017. I would like to wish you all a Happy New Year and hope you all had a lovely Christmas spent with friends and family.

Council is on track and its full steam ahead, with two new directors; Bob Stewart and Charmaine Murfet commencing at the end of December last year and Gen McConnell commencing as acting Hostel Coordinator mid January. We hope you all have positive experiences in your respective positions.

Congratulations to the winners of the Christmas light decorations competition - Steve & Sharon Woolhouse for the residential display and Motel Capri for the best decorated business. It was a very festive sight to see and wonderful for so many to get involved both in Balranald and Euston. Everyone did very well - you are all winners in my eyes!

The 2016 New Year’s Eve celebrations at Greenham Park proved to be another fun, family night full of enjoyment by all who attended.

Congratulations to the New Years Eve Committee who work tirelessly throughout the year to ensure an event such as this continues to occur each year. I’d also like to acknowledge those who donated prizes or volunteered their time to assist in any way.

I wish to congratulate Tony Trinchi and Fiona Scoleri on becoming Australian Citizens and I also put my hands together for the winners of our Australia Day awards - you are all very worthy recipients. I am proud of all the residents in our Shire. - Aussie, Aussie, Aussie - Oi, Oi, Oi!!

I would really like to see every award category filled next Australia Day - please put your heads together and nominate our ‘unsung heroes’.

It may seem strange that Balranald was put on immediate water restrictions after recent flooding. The high river caused some damage and significant maintenance to the weir had to be rectified by WaterNSW.

Supply level for the Murrumbidgee River is slowly returning. I would like to thank the residents of Balranald for their assistance and patience during this emergency.

I look forward to what this year brings, and wish you all a healthy and prosperous 2017.

From the

Mayor’s Office

Mayor Leigh Byron

Another successful New Years Eve community celebration at Greenham Park was enjoyed with over 200 in attendance

As well as lots of food, drinks and glow sticks for all to enjoy, great prizes were on offer for the spinning wheel and raffle, generously donated by local businesses, while entertainment included a giant slide & jumping castle for the kids and music by “Hutch”.

With great music and a barbeque adding to the relaxed festivities, everyone at the park sat back at midnight to enjoy the spectacular fireworks display which completed the night and saw in the new year.

Fundraising for 2017 has commenced - if you are able to assist in any way, such as joining the committee, have any ideas on making the event even better or are able to donate prizes, please contact any of the current committee (Kylie Jolliffe, Betty Torney or Kristy Cameron).

Thank you to all who assisted with fundraising, donations and on the night.

A workshop for Councillors and senior staff was held on 19 January to begin planning the 2017/18 Community Strategic Plan. The workshop forms the first step in developing what will be your, as a community, Strategic Plan that sets out where you want Council to focus its resources over the coming years. This document is important as Councils Service Delivery Plan and Operational Plan for the coming year will be derived from the Community Strategic Plan. A draft Plan will be on public display in late February

and Council encourages the community to think about what it wants Council to deliver and provide input into this plan
