FROM THE PRINCIPAL
LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU AT SPORTS DAY
Children are well prepared and the weather looks great for this Wednesday and Thursdays Inter-
house Sports Competition. Wednesday is our field event day with Thursday being ball games
and all the sprint events and sports games for our Junior children.
As always our P&C association will offer a range of foods to be purchased on the day so do
come along and partake in the events.
STUDENT PROGRESS REPORTS
So as to avoid sending Report Cards home on our Sports Days we hope to have the majority if
not all report cards sent home today (Tuesday). Please look for them and be reminded that
Parent/Teacher interviews will be held at the beginning of next term. Each class makes its own
arrangements so those requesting a Parent/Teacher meeting will do so through their Classroom
Teacher.
ADDITIONAL PREP CLASS
Growth and enrolments has allowed us to create an additional Prep class for Semester Two.
Letters will go home today to the Parents of the children who will be joining this class for the first
day back after the holidays. This class will be taught by Karen Dabinett.
PARENT PRINCIPAL FORUM
Semester Two I will be initiating a Parent and Principal Forum. The objectives of this forum is to
have a group where informed comment about operation the school can be shared, offered and
gained. Information discussed will then used to assist in the effective operations of the school.
It would be hoped to get a Parent rep from each of our classes where we would meet at least
once a month to discuss matters pertaining to the school. This forum will be about advising the
Principal and is not a forum where gripes or grievances about school, staff children or other par-
ents will be aired and shared. It is not a place where personal matters are discussed either indi-
viduals or those of others.
Classroom teaches have been asked to identify a parent who would be willing to join this forum
and should you be interested then I ask that you speak to your Childs Teacher.
TOILETS CLOSED
For the remainder of this week the toilets in CPA2 will be closed. This is due to a blockage in our
sewerage lines. Sufficient toilets are available in our main amenities building and within our Hall.
On Sports Day toilets for our parent and student use will be those within our Scholl Hall. Please
enter from the Grandstand entry.
SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT
The 2014 Darling Heights State School Annual Report has be published on our school website.
This report provides details as to a number of operations of our school throughout the preceding
year.
SCHOOLWISE POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR PROGRAM On Thursday children who have met the requirements of great behaviour this Term will be afford-ed a treat day where they will be able to watch a movie while in the comfort of their pyjamas. It is always our pleasure to celebrate the positive behaviours of the majority of our school’s students.
Until Next Week

FROM THE DEPUTY SWPBS (SCHOOL WIDE POSITIVE SUPPORT) MATTERS This week’s Value of the week is again “Respect” and the focus is “I treat others how I want to be treated”. This is a familiar saying that you would have heard many times before, but is one that when lived by, creates more compas-sionate and empathetic students. In discussions with teachers this week, students will learn that showing respect to others includes using kind words and actions (having the ability to solve problems with our words) and considering the feelings of others in different situations (showing empathy). Respect to each other can be shown with a simple “hello” and “goodbye”, a smile or by saying “please” and “thank you”. We are all more likely to respond positively to somebody that is being respectful and friendly towards us. So why bother with ‘please’ ‘thank you’ and ‘excuse me’? Manners are like the ‘check and balance’ of our moral health; they are the little signals that reveal the strength of our commitment to respecting others. Words such as ‘please, ‘thank you’ and ‘excuse me’ might be simple but their power and effect on others is immeas-urable. We constantly reinforce and teach students to always use their manners. This is something that is very evi-dent in our students at Darling Heights State School, in fact, it is one of the main comments that we receive from visi-tors to our school; the impeccable manners of our students. Acknowledging that other peoples’ rights, needs and well-being must be taken into account is the beginning of our understanding of what is required of us as members of any community. They show that we respect people, all peo-ple, people we know and don’t know, people who don’t like us or are utterly different from us. We are simply ac-knowledging that they, like us, are part of a community that depends on our mutual respect for its peaceful and har-monious survival. A special thank you to all parents who take the time to talk to their child/ren about each week’s Value and focus. I wish you all a restful and safe break and we look forward to seeing you all again after the holidays.
SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AWARDS – SEMESTER ONE This week, students that have achieved an attendance record of 95-100% for the semester will be presented with a “Gold Attendance Award”. This is an outstanding achievement and one that the majority of our students will receive. We congratulate both the students and parents for recognising the value and importance of attending school each day. Every day really does count and we look forward to even more students receiving this award in Semester Two.
Quote of the Week

DENTAL VAN Please ensure that all Dental Forms are returned to the office no later than Wednesday 25th June. GET IN THE GAME, GET STARTED Get Started is one of three funding programs available that support recreation at the grass roots level. Get Start-ed assists the children and young people who can least afford, or may otherwise benefit from, joining a sport or recreation club. A voucher to a maximum of $150 is available to help pay the cost of sport and recreation membership and/or participation fees. Who is eligible to apply? Children aged 5 to 18 years whose parent/carer or guardian holds a Health Care Card or Pensioner Concession Card and who are residents of Queensland, or other children identified by two referral agents. If you would like a parent fact sheet they are available from the office, or you can log onto www.nprsr.qld.gov.au/getinthegame to get started to see if you are eligible. EAL/D NEWS In may our EALD group had to write a biography about Malwas Mywin, because he is courageous. On the 12th of June our 6/7 EALD group; had a special guest. Our guest was Malwal Mywin. It was very exciting to have him with us. He answered all the questions we had and shared a bit more information about his life that we didn’t know. He told us that he even went back to South Sudan to get married, and see his family. We all enjoyed having him visit and 2e hope to see him again. By Harera Ndayishimiye
Special Education Program News Rewards Day
Thursday last week was rewards day for all SEP students who had been showing the school’s STAR values
over the semester. The students were very excited to be travelling on a bus down to the Ipswich Railway Mu-
seum. Our day started with a tour of the workshop where we saw the hot furnaces and eyelets being made
followed by visiting the area where the trains were made. In this area we saw the inside of the engine and
discovered what a “Cow Catcher” was. The rest of the day was spent looking around the museum, enjoying
the miniature train landscapes and playing in the replica trains. The students had a fantastic day and contin-
ued showing their STAR values with excellent behaviour.
Finally I will leave you with this joke: What do you call a train that eats toffee? A chew, chew train.
