Monday 2 nd May 2016 Welcome back everyone to term 2. It is great to catch up with all the students and hear about their holidays. This term is shaping up to be very busy for our students and school community. I know that the P&C have some big fund raising events in the planning stage. The school Fun Run will take place later in the term which is always a favourite with the students. The students have some important academic activities this term. NAPLAN will be conducted during week three on Tuesday 10 th , Wednesday 11 th and Thursday 12 th of May. And we have school reports at the end of the term. Reconciliation and NAIDOC Weeks will also take place this term and we are really looking forward to the many activities associated with these events. We are all looking forward to a great term. I encourage everyone to follow our four values of Be Safe, Be polite, Be Co-operative and Be Fair. Thank you to everyone who participated in the ANZAC Day Parade. Tony Johnston Principal *****COMING EVENTS TERM 2***** PBL Recapping Term 1, the Positive Behaviour for Learning team have been busy collecting school based data to examine the effectiveness of our teaching strategies. The results have indicated that 93.5% of students have responded to our focus teaching based on our school values of Be Safe, Be Polite, Be Cooperative and Be Fair. Most pleasing has been the students response to the value of Be Safe. This term, teachers will be covering the value Be Cooperative, commencing with a change in transition from the playground to the quad. A new temporary pathway has been created separating infants and primary students returning to class after playtime to allow new grass to grow on the field. Camden Haven High School. Although we have not been given a set date, the festival will be on either Tuesday 21st June or Wednesday 22nd June. We will let you know the date as soon as we can. Dance Teachers Absentee Letters As parents will be aware all absences must be explained. If your child was not at school on the last day of term 1 a note of explanation must be sent in to the teacher. All late arrivals without a parent/carer present must supply a note or the parent needs to call the office in the morning. Thank you for your co-operation. The Very Hungry Caterpillar This week all K-2 students received a permission note to attend a live performance of this popular book at our Glasshouse. As there are only 95 seats available, the first in with their $17 get to go. We have really enjoyed performances of the Gruffalo and Room on the Broom in the past, so we expect this will be another quality performance. Get your money in fast! Pip Riordan Assistant Principal Y6 Shirts We are hoping to receive our Yr6 shirts around the middle of this term. The supplier apologises for any inconvenience.

Feedback to Parents Reports During Week 1, students in Years 1 and 2 took home the Term 1 report on their Literacy and Numeracy progress. The parent report provides information about what your child can do in these 2 Key Learning Areas and offers suggestions to support their learning at home. If you would like to chat with your child’s teacher, please contact the front office to arrange a suitable time. This term parents will receive a formal Student report covering all aspects of school. Thank you for you continued support, Pip Riordan Assistant Principal Cross Country Training We are now training for the annual cross country every day. Students need to wear joggers and most importantly if they have asthma they need to carry a puffer with them. ANZAC Day March Congratulations and thank you to all students and staff who marched on ANZAC Day. Our students looked wonderful in their uniforms and were fine ambassadors for Westport Public School. The school leaders laid a wreath upon the War Memorial. The students who marched will enjoy a sausage sizzle this Friday 6th May.

Yr5 Entry to an Opportunity Class in 2017 Opportunity Classes cater for highly achieving academically gifted students who may otherwise be without classmates at their own academic and social level. These schools help gifted and talented students to learn by grouping them with other gifted and talented students, teaching them in specialised ways and providing educational materials at the appropriate level. If you would like to have your child considered for entry in 2017, you need to apply soon. You will need to apply on the internet using a valid email address (not the student’s email address). Detailed instructions on how to apply online will be available from 26th April 2016 in a printed application information booklet and at www.schools.nsw.edu.au/ocplacement. The application website opens 26th April and closes on 13th May 2016. No late applications will be accepted. There are no paper application forms. If you do not have internet access, you could apply at a public library. If you have a disability that prevents you from using a computer, you can contact the Unit for assistance. You must submit only ONE application for each student. Community News Tennis Lessons – Westport Tennis Club
