Welcome Back to the Assumption Term Welcome back to the Assumption Term. I trust that everyone enjoyed their break and are now ready for the new term. During this Term, as a Catholic community we will be celebrating the feast of Our Lady on Tuesday August 15. Two of the great legacies women in the Catholic Church have given our community are health care and education. I am sure at some stage all of us benefited from these services. I look forward to celebrating the Feast of the Assumption and celebrating the role of women in the Catholic Church during the course of this Term. I wish everyone an enjoyable Assumption Term. From the Director of Catholic Identity Mrs Egan Community Mass Thank you to those who attended our Community Mass. It was lovely to have celebrated the apostles Sts Peter and Paul with you and be reminded of their work for the church. The readings of the Mass recalled the commissioning of Peter (for all his failings) as the ‘rock upon which I will build my church,’ and reminded us of Paul for his enthusiastic embrace of Christianity after his dramatic conversion on the road to Damascus. Both were called by God to help build the fledgling Christian church, both responded and played major (though different) roles in laying the foundations of our church. We are all called to play a role in building God's kingdom on earth. Some of these roles are extraordinary, but for the most part they are conducted in the everyday world in our everyday activities. Grandparent Mass Thank you to those who joined us for Grandparents’ Mass on Wednesday July 26. It was lovely to be able to celebrate Jesus’ grandparents, St Anne and St Joachim, as well as all of the wonderful grandparents in our own community. A special thank you to Virginia Jewers, grandmother to Thomas Medland for doing a reading for us on the day. Please find below the prayer featured on a prayer cards for the day. Lord Jesus, you were born of the Virgin Mary, the daughter of Saints Joachim and Anne. Look with love on grandparents the world over. Protect them! They are a source of enrichment for families, for the Church and for all of society. Support them! As they grow older, may they continue to be for their families strong pillars of Gospel faith, guardians

of noble domestic ideals, living treasuries of sound religious traditions. Make them teachers of wisdom and courage, that they may pass on to future generations the fruits of their mature human and spiritual experience. Lord Jesus, help families and society to value the presence and roles of grandparents. May they never be ignored or excluded, but always encounter respect and love. Help them to live serenely and to feel welcomed in all the years of life which you give them. Amen!

- Benedict XVI Events for the Assumption Term There are many events happening during the Assumption Term and you are warmly welcomed to come and share these with us. Good Samaritan Campus Mass Sunday August 6 Assumption Mass Tuesday August 15 Community Mass Friday August 25 Father’s Day Mass Friday September 8

From the Head of Middle School Mr le Roux I hope that everybody had a fantastic holiday break and are now looking forward to an exciting term. There are many activities planned throughout the term where your child will have the opportunity to learn new skills and enjoy many positive experiences. This is also the time in the school year where we start the process of subject selection. Throughout the term, your child will be undertaking various assessment tasks, both formal and informal. This will give us a clear picture of their needs and better help us to cater for them. The College encourages all parents to participate fully in the opportunities given to meet staff and to contact individual teachers. Families are encouraged to work in partnership with the relevant pastoral care teams and to contact their Year Level Co-ordinators with any concerns. Things to remember

Please ensure that your child’s laptop is charged;

Please ensure that your child’s homework is completed and all assessment tasks are noted down with the due date;

Please ensure that your child is organised with materials, books, equipment and uniform the night before;

Homeroom starts at 8.40am. If your child is late they need to sign in at Student Reception;

On or before the day of absence, the parent/guardian should call the 24-hour absentee line (8734 2400) to verify and explain the absence. If no phone call has been received by 8.00am the school will SMS the parent/guardian advising of student absence. An absence must be followed up with a written note and medical certificate on the students’ return to school. This is a legal requirement.

Year 9 Country Experience The Country Experience forms part of the compulsory curriculum at Thomas Carr College. Therefore, it is expected that all students attend the Good Samaritan Campus during their allocated timeframe. Any issues relating to attendance need to be discussed in advance with the Year Level Co-ordinators in consultation with the Head of Middle School and the Good Samaritan Campus Manager. Should a student be unable to attend the Good Samaritan Campus due to medical reasons or is taken ill at the Good Samaritan Campus, the parents need to plan for the collection of the student, and a medical certificate need to be provided to the College. Should a student be deemed unfit to return to the Good Samaritan Campus it is the responsibility of the parents to communicate this to the Good Samaritan Campus Manager and the Year Level Co-ordinators immediately. Students will not be able to return to Thomas Carr College – Tarneit Campus as all scheduled classes for their group are conducted at the Good Samaritan Campus. The failure to complete the academic assignment at the Good Samaritan Campus may hinder a student’s ability to successfully complete the overall assessment task for iD9 which may result in a student receiving an ‘unsatisfactory’ grade. Failure to successfully complete assessment tasks may result in a student being placed on Academic Tracking. Please refer to our website under the Middle School menu for further information or contact your child’s homeroom teacher or Year Level Co-ordinators Holidays During Term Time The College does not support students taking holidays during term times. In some cases, it means that some students may fall behind in their work and it may affect their results and successful promotion to the following year level. If you do intend on taking holiday time during the term, please ensure that the College is informed about this in advance with the exact dates of travel and anticipated return to College. Parents are

asked to apply, in writing, to the Head of School for approval of extended absences due to family holidays.

From the Head of Senior School Mrs Knurek Term 3 for Senior School students is always a critical time in the school year; we start the process of subject selection and Pathways guidance for the following year and it remains the time for students to really apply themselves to their subjects and maintain regular study and work habits. As students start to make decisions about future careers, I encourage you to visit tertiary institutions on Open Days. Most of these take place in August. If your son or daughter is looking at a VET or VCAL option, then investigate the various “taster” courses at TAFE institutions and follow up any contacts you or your friends may have with apprenticeships or placements in the work place. Senior School students are encouraged to seek careers advice/pathways information through the Careers Department in preparation for subject selection. All year levels have an assembly which outlines the process. Effective education takes place when parents play an active role in the education process. The College encourages all parents to participate fully in the opportunities given to meet staff and to contact individual teachers. Regular discussion at home may allay student concerns and fears. Families are encouraged to work in partnership with the relevant pastoral care teams, and to contact their Year level Coordinator with any concerns. During the holidays, all parents should have received an SMS notification regarding important dates for the Assumption Term. I hope it will be of use to you all. I have also included it below. Student Uniform All students are expected to have the correct uniform and to wear it with pride as representatives of the College. Students who are wearing incorrect uniform or items that are not part of the College Uniform or sports uniform may be required to go home and change. Parents are reminded that it is not permitted for students to wear “skins”, leggings or tracksuit pants that are not part of the College sports uniform. Nail polish, eye makeup and excess jewellery are also not part of the uniform. Students are expected to have long hair tied back and boys are expected to be clean-shaven. Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated. Year 10 Course Advice Day On Friday August 11, Year 10 students will participate in a Course Advice Day where each student will have an individual subject selection meeting with a designated staff member. Students need to make an appointment time on this day via Parent Teacher Online. We encourage parents to attend with their child if possible on this day. Year 10 Dinner Dance Our Year 10 students are looking forward to their Dinner Dance and much planning is going into ensuring an enjoyable evening for all. Parents are reminded that all year 10 students are expected at College on Thursday August 10 until lunchtime. Students will be dismissed at lunchtime and issued with their tickets for the evening at that time. Students are to be collected promptly at 11.00pm from the venue by their parents

From the Social Justice Co-ordinator Ms Dagmang From Monday June 19 unti Friday June 23, Thomas Carr College celebrated Refugee Week. There was a Refugee Week Symposium, the Circle of Silence and Detention4Detention, and the Refugee Mosaic Design competition. This week is a celebration of the positive contributions of refugees to the Australian ociety and a call to action in solidarity with refugees that they may be reunited with their families and be integrated more fairly in their host communities. Pat Sourivong, a teacher from Baden Powell College; and Kot Monoah, a lawyer from Slater and Gordon Law Firm, attended the College on Monday June 19 to speak to students at the symposium and share their personal experiences as Refugees. It was really inspiring to hear what some people have had to go through at such a young age in their lives, but still managed to have a successful career and live with a smile on their face. At the end of the presentation, Kot left us with an advice never to let people tell us that we can’t do something, because nobody else but ourselves understand the true potential that we have to be successful in life. Brandan Barlow, College Captain. On Tuesday June 20, staff and students held the 5-minute Circle of Silence and the Detention4Detention, a voluntary lunchtime detention that symbolises the separation of families caused by government policies on refugees.

From the Student Support Department Ms Sherlock It is that time of year where the College submits the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data (NCCD) for School Students with Learning and or Special Needs. This student

identifying information will only be provided to Catholic Education Victoria Network (CEVN). If you do not consent for your child’s name to be specified in the data please contact the Student Support Department by Wednesday August 16 2017, on [email protected] stating your child’s name and we will amend the data.

JHC Thai Coconut Roll Reason for Recall: Undeclared egg Diabetes Week During the school holidays Diabetes Awareness Week occurred. The theme for this year is ‘The Invisible Disease’. The aim of diabetes week is to help those with diabetes and their families manage diabetes, to help prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes in the future and to improve the understanding of diabetes and to eliminate discrimination. As we have a number of students with diabetes at the College and given that all types of diabetes are on the increase, it is important that everyone is aware of the impact that diabetes can have. It is important that we know of ways how diabetes can be better managed whilst students are at school. If diabetes is not well controlled, it can affect cognitive function, memory and the ability to process information. There are two types of diabetes that need to be managed; Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Students with type 1 diabetes require insulin to manage diabetes. Students with type 2 diabetes manage their diabetes with diet and exercise .Some students are required to administer insulin whilst others may wear an insulin pump device that supplies them with a constant supply of insulin. Students perform best when their diabetes is well controlled. In order to achieve this, they may need to test their blood glucose levels frequently during the day whilst in the classroom. They may also need to treat a low blood sugar level by eating high sugary food such as lollies in class. They will also require other food to make sure that their blood glucose levels remain in the optimal target range.

From the Head of Sport Miss White Please note that the fixture has been placed on the College website: Learning and Teaching > ACS Sports. We urge all families to take note of the fixture as it outlines where students will be each week. Please take the time to discuss with your children when and where they will be playing each week and what time they are expected back

at school. On arrival back at the College, students have the ability to use the phone in the Gym Office to make a phone call home. During winter, it can get dark quite early, so if students would like to come to the Gym to wait to be picked up then that is encouraged. It would be much appreciated if parents/guardians are able to pick up their son/daughter in a timely manner or arrange for alternative arrangements for them to get home. A reminder that no appointments should be made during ACS time. If your child is unable to attend a training session or a game then it is important that you inform the Head of Sport, Miss White or Assistant to the Head of Sport, Ms Winch as early as possible via a signed note or phone call. A medical certificate must also be presented prior to or after an absence. Failure to present a medical certificate the day after an absence will result in a detention. Students should not be signed out for anything other than a medical appointment. Injuries If your son/daughter sustains an injury which prevents them from playing ACS then a medical certificate must be produced to Miss White or Miss Winch as soon as possible prior to the next round of ACS outlining the dates they are unavailable to play. This helps us to keep track of injuries and ensure our teams are not impacted greatly. EpiPens and Asthma Pumps If your child has an EpiPen or asthma pump they are required to ensure it travels with them to all ACS games and training. This must be shown to their coach prior to getting on the bus. Concussion Should your child play a sport outside school and receives a concussion it is important to notify Miss White and the College Nurse prior to your child’s next scheduled ACS game or training. Any child with concussion will be asked to get a medical certificate to certify they have clearance to resume training and playing ACS. This is an important step to ensure your child is safe to participate as their health is our number one priority. ACS Chess Competition The annual ACS Chess Competition was held on Monday May 22 at St Michael’s Grammar School. On this occasion, our College was represented by Michael Lapina (10 Gold), Jonathan Rose (10 Silver), Farhan Aamer (10 Blue), Tyler Opini (10 Red), Charles Gade (9 Purple), Nicholas Marakovic (9 Purple), Calvin Opini (9 Purple) and Alex Lapina (9 Blue), a team of passionate and enthusiastic chess players. The competition was played in great spirit from start to finish. Michael was our best player on the day and secured 4 wins in 6 games. Charles, a bit green experience-wise, performed well to win three games out of three. The team collectively performed well enough to better last year’s result. Our school finished fourth amongst the seven participating schools. The whole team was to be congratulated on their efforts, discipline and pride in representing the College. I would like to thank Mr Andrew Cathcart for his support and assistance in the lead up to this event.

From the Arts and Technology Learning Area Ms Prasad Introduction of STEM/STEAM in Food Technology-Lalita Prasad This Semester, the Year 7 Food Technology students worked on a project which required them to research a recipe for a sweet muffin to bake in class. Students were required to investigate the nutritional value found in their muffin and calculate the cost of each muffin to see how much profit they could make. They compared the commercial price with the profit they got from the sale. Doing so, there was an integration of STEAM (meaning S- Science, T- Technology, E-engineering, A- Art and M- Mathematics) and STEM.

From the Head of English, Languages and EAL Mr Cathcart Year 9 Indonesian, Let’s Get Cooking On Wednesday June 7, the Year 9 Indonesian class were given the opportunity to make an Indonesian delicacy, 'Klepons'. Klepons are very sweet and rich in flavour, with a delicious taste. They are a mixture of flour, grounded coconut, food colouring and palm sugar, and have very delicate and soft outside. We worked in teams, as they need to be cooked very carefully. The traditional colour of the Klepon is green which is from the pandan, but most of the students decided to use red or blue food colouring. None of this would of been possible if it wasn't for Bu Febrinald. Thank you to Mrs Prasad and Mrs Lagamba for letting us use the food technology room and also helping us throughout the session. Overall, our whole Indonesian class is extremely thankful for this rare opportunity. It was lots of fun and gave us an insight into the Indonesian culture. Shane D’Souza and Joshua Surrao – 9 Purple.
