The President's LetterThe Scarab Club of Detroit continues to be one of the

premier art clubs in the city despite the desperate econom-ic times in our state. The quality of our art exhibits con-tinues to improve, which should continue to attract betterartists to our club.

Like any organization of this type, we are as good asthe participation and support of our members. It takes alot of effort to put on an exhibit or a party, but if thelabor is shared by all, the rewards are many, besides beingjust plain fun. Please volunteer.

We have some problems. A building of this vintage re-quires repairs and repairs cost money. So - rather thanraise dues - we hope that all the members will get behindour auctions, parties, and fund raisers and make them suc-cessful. Much of our revenue is gathered through member-ship fees and it follows that the greater the membership, the better the club. If your friends would make good Scarabs, invite them to join.

If you have any ideas, suggestions, gripes, or improve-ments, please contact me or any board member, we're eagerto hear from you.

One more thing - the loss of our piano has been a blowto the fine musical evenings formerly enjoyed at the club.We need an angel! If you see anyone with a white robe andwings pulling a grand piano, lead them to the Scarab Club.

Happy New Year

Fredericks in Free PressMarshall Fredericks was the Man of the Day in the

Detroit Free Press Horoscope column on January 31. He wasdescribed as the sculptor who created more than 500 works, including "Spirit of Detroit", Belle Isle's gazelle foun-tain and the Veteran Memorial eagle. The paragraph endedwith the year Marshall was born, but that information willNEVER appear in the BUZZ.

We Have a Heineken!Collins Tausney, our "Young Man About the Club" is the

owner of that handsome Old English Sheep Dog seen occasion-ally in the garden. The dog's name is Heineken, and he'san eight year old marshmallow in spite of his awesome size.

It seems appropriate that our club has a Collins andan imported beer on its custodial staff.

Singing (?) ScarabsA rousing SingAlong was held on January 22, with music

supplied by Bill Kirschman at his "traveling vibraphone".Everyone sang, or tried to sing along with the words flashedon the gallery wall by veteran cameraman Richard Vernick.

The gallery was decorated for the occasion by BrianSmith, who displayed songsheets from a bygone era which thecrowd clearly remembered as though it were yesterday.

Carroll Sheeren Kirshman sang a solo which shall remainnameless, the Skoglunds and the Jacobs formed a quartet torender "Cigareets, Whiskey, and Wild Wild Women", and theclub Prez did a soft shoe with Eileen Bibby as their first-ever attempt at dancing. With class acts like that, who'dever want to go home?

Attention, Auction Donors...The officers and directors of the Scarab Club wish to

thank you for your contribution to the 1982 auction. Inspite of the current economic climate, the attendance andfinancial results were gratifying.

The auction remains one of our major fund raisingevents, but only through the support of Scarabs like your-self.

We are sure that you are aware of the monetary valueof your donation, and would like to remind you of both theFederal and Michigan tax benefits.

The I.R.S. allows deduction for materials up to $100per painting.

Michigan allows 5Q?o of the normal market value, witha maximum credit of $200 on a joint return, or $100 on asingle return.

Thus, a painting worth $200 may qualify for up to$200 in credits.

Thanks again for your valuable support.

Sincerely,Larry B. FinkAuction Chairman

Long in Lounge ExhibitMadeline Long exhibited some fine work in the club

lounge during January. Her reception was held on Sunday,January 9» and a wall-to-wall crowd enjoyed an excellentsmorgasbord while viewing Madeline's watercolors, oils, and pencil portraits.

The latest report shows 12 paintings sold, and that'senough to make any Scarab say "Congratulations, Madeline".

1983 Welcoming PartyThe New Year's Eve Party was supposed to be Pot Luck,

but in typical Scarab Club tradition, the gals went over-board in preparing their favorite dishes. There wasn't a lowcal item on the menu, but then who looks for Ry Krisp onNew Year's Eve?

George Booth took some video tapes of what happened atmidnight, just in case nobody would remember in the cold, grey light of dawn. Will George blackmail one or two of us?Probably.

Larry and Margaret Joan Fink produced this affair, anddirected the efforts of daughters Jennifer and Leslie, whoacted as Hostesses for the evening. Thanks to the entireFink family for a FINE partyI
