• The topic must be appropriate to you as the speaker. It must grow out of your interests, experience, or knowledge.
• The topic must be suitable to your audience. It must be suggested by the interests, knowledge, attitudes, and needs of your audience.

• Audience analysis, the study of audience knowledge, interest, and attitudes.

• The topic must be appropriate to the speech occasion.
• The Final Check Answer the following questions: Does my topic grow out of my experience, interests, or knowledge? Do I have genuine enthusiasm for the topic? Is the topic suggested by the interests,attitudes, and needs of my listeners? Does the topic add to their knowledge? Is the topic appropriate to the occasion? Have I properly limited the topic? Does the topic result from my purpose to inform, entertain, convince, impress, or actuate?

• Ability to use personal experiences in your speech (first-hand experience)
• Though your personal experiences may not be enough, use additional resources:

Purposes of an outline Shows relationships among ideas which should have unity, coherence and emphasis Estimates the length of your speech Serves as a preparation outline that you can use while rehearsing Serves as a presentation outline that can be used as a guide in the actual delivery

Two Main Functions: To gain favourable audience attention To clarify the purpose of the speech*It will also build the speaker’s knowledge, credibility and goodwill.

speech topic• Use humor that is fresh, brief, and
in good taste• Tell an interesting story from your
own experience or someone else. The illustration can be factual or it can be imaginary
