Description:Matching business card and letterhead designed using a personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe IllustratorAdob InDesign

Objectives:Create a new logo for either a fictitious or existing company.Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:I used an image of a fortune cookie as a point of reference, then created my own using the Pen Tool in Illustrator. I chose my color scheme based off the universally brown color of the fortune cookie, and incorporated other shades of brown to fit the requirements for a monochromatic color scheme, and I used those colors to accent the edges of the cookie. These color accents were placed strageically to give the icon a sense of depth as they imitate lighting. I then used the Shape Tool to create a rectangle and placed it on the edge of the cookie to make a paper “fortune” where the company name is found. After that was done, I selected both the cookie and the paper and made a copy, then made the copy gray and offset it from the logo and placed it behind it to create a small drop shadow. Once the icon was finished, I took the shape of the cookie, copied and enlarged it, then reduced the opacity to create a watermark. Once that was finished, I added the name of the company and my contact information in contrasting fonts.

Description:Matching business card and letterhead designed using a personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create a new logo for either a fictitious or existing company.Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.Use the basic tools of Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:I used the Shape Tool to create two rectangles, both 2” x 3.5”, to create borders for the front and back of my business card. I then copied the logo and contact information from my letterhead into their respective places. I replicated the cookie icon on the back of the card, but removed the company name to have space for my contact information. Once everything was in place, I created another rectangle, placed it behind the front logo, and used the eyedropper tool to match the dark brown color within the logo.

Description:A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:Sublime Text Editor

Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.Write content to describe the process of creating the logo, and describe how it appeals to a target audience.Design a web page using HTML to display both the logo and the content.Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and a basic understanding of CSS.Identify hex colors for web design.Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as a single file.

Process:I created this web page using Sublime Text Editor. After finishing my HTML markup, I attached a pre-made CSS document and linked it in the HTML head tags. I used the colors from my logo as colors on my web page. Then I added a high resolution image as my background that properly tied into the theme of the logo. I changed the fonts to ones that were more web-appropriate, then declared several backup fonts to accommodate many different browsers. I also centered my logo and added some padding so it didn’t feel too crowded. Lastly, I styled the link at the bottom of the page.

Description:Three logo variations for the same company.

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:Create a new logo for either a fictitious or existing company with three variations.Use the basic tools of Illustrator.

Process:I used the Shape Tool to create several circles of mutliple sizes. I used the largest two circles as my basic lifesaver shape, and as the lower shadow. Then I used the remaining smaller circles as the hole, the inner shading, and the upper inner shadow. To create the appearnace of shadows, I selected those circles, colored them a light gray, then reduced the opacity. I then chose two contrasting fonts and played with the sizing to create a poitn of focus. I changed the word “productions” to green to complemet the red in the lifesaver, then aligned the first letters of both words.

Description:A full-color bleed event ad to promote a fundraiser using only Microsoft Word and a scanner.

Program(s)/Tools:Microsoft WordEpson Scanner

Objectives:Find, scan, and import a high quality image.Create a full-bleed design.Use text boxes for layout in Word.Insert and edit images in Word.

Process:I scanned the image, thenproperly cropped and sized it. I chose my color scheme based on the color of the facepaint, then colored my text accordingly. I used the Shape Tool to drag out a rectangle upon which I placed the event information. In order to create a better sense of visual flow, I reduced the opacity of the rectangle and colored it red to give my text legibility without compromising style.

Description:A two-sided (offset) folding brochure.

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesignAdobe IllustratorAbode Photoshop

Objectives:Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.Learn how to wrap text around and image.Use paragraph styles in InDesign.

Process:First, I set up the offset fold in InDesign. I used many smaller photographs on the offset to create repetition and alignment. I chose a color scheme that would complement the cover picture. Using Illustrator, I created a logo using the Shape Tool. I used Photoshop to cut out the image of the home on the inside-left page, then refined the edges, and placed the cutout on a new layer. I then saved it as a.png so there would be no background of any kind. Once placed in the brochure, I used the Text Wrap window to place the paragraph text around the edges of the image.

Description:An inspirational montage created by blending two or more images, and using appropriate typography.

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn to manage Photoshop layers.Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.Use filters.Apply appropriate typography.

Process:First I added a layer mask to the background image to add a more blue hue to it, in order to tone down the brightness and add a bit of contrast. I then added the image of the woman, which I cut out using the Lasso Tool, then added a layer mask and used the Brush Tool with opacity set to 30% to blend the image and remove any hard edges. I repeated the process with the image of Christ. I then added some type and added a drop shadow for maximum legibility.

Description:Black and white promotional flier to promote a graduate leadership conference.

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe InDesign

Objectives:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography.Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.Create a project folder with the image, logo, and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process:First I created several sketches of possible layouts. I chose the one I liked the best and used it as a guide to create it digitally in InDesign. I chose a picture conducive to both repetition and alignment, then added a gray, transparent rectangle that I placed diagonally to add to the flow. I added appropriate text using contrasting fonts, and emboldened certain words to create emphasis and help clarify the message. I was given the image, logo, and copy for this flier. Additionally, I checked the copy for spelling and grammatical errors.

Description:A personally taken photograph that has been edited/formatted using photoshop.

Program(s)/Tools:Adobe PhotoshopCanon Camera

Objectives:Learn basic photography skills.Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.Size and crop the image.Adjust image brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation levels.

Process:I took this picture using a Canon digital camera. I then opened it in Photoshop and cropped it, then used the Healing Tool to airbrush out a powerline that sat in the middle of the shot. I then tweaked the saturation, hue, and brightness levels. After that, I added proper typography using contrasting fonts and an analogous color scheme.
