olive WooD sales tHis WeekenDFamily from Bethlehem will be selling religious, hand carved items made from olive wood. Proceeds from the sale will go towards support of Catholic families who are experiencing political strife.Due to the violence and discrimination towards Christians in the Holy Land most of the families left their country for different parts of the world. They are now less than 1.5 percent of the population.

Thank you for your support of these families.

November – our moNth for rememberiNg the DeaD

Our feasts of All Saints (Nov. 1) and All Souls (Nov. 2) usher in the month of November, when we profess our solidarity with the saints and ancestors; with those on whose shoulders we stand. Catholics have a long history of praying for our deceased brothers and sisters. It is our way of continuing our relationship with them and assisting them on their journey to heaven. In all our liturgical prayers we have intercessory prayers for “those who have gone before us.”

Both feasts remind us that as followers of Jesus we have a BIG family that reaches beyond the grave and beyond our time in life called the Communion of Saints, our models of Christian virtues and moral living. All of this helps us grow in readiness to acknowledge, with St. Francis, that death is a sister to us, another of God’s servants:

We praise You, Lord, for Sister Death, from whom no-one living can escape…. Blessed are those that she finds doing Your Will. No second death can do them harm. - St. Francis of Assisi, “Canticle of the Sun”

Scrolls of the Dead As is our tradition, our parish will display large scrolls with the names of parishioners and family members who have died during the past year. The names that have been called in to the rectory and placed in the Prayer of the Faithful are listed on the scrolls. When taken down, the scrolls will be cut up, so that families may retrieve the individual name(s) of their loved one(s).

Book of the Dead The Book of the Deceased is processed to the altar with the gifts during our Sunday liturgies. It keeps an informal record of our deceased family and friends. Parishioners are invited to enter the names of loved ones who now rest in the Lord by visiting the rectory office.

We want to extend a hearty THANK YOU to all who supported the 44th Annual Parish Fair. The generous giving of Time and Talent from our parish families and community made this Fair Weekend a great example of Faith, Family and Friends for our children and our parish. In Faith & Friendship, Your 2014 Parish Fair Chairs Troy Thrower, Jen Adams, Jen Atler-Ammazzalorso

WHY NAMETAGS?Several t imes in recent months we have encouraged everyone at Sunday Mass to create a name tag. Why? What's in a name? With apologies to Shakespeare, a lot.Knowing someone's name is not only a sign of respect, names also signify our individuality and, when we gather for Mass, remind us that each person has a special part in the Body of Christ. Many of us sit in the same pew every week, and recognize the people around us. But maybe we don't know their names. And there are people at Mass every Sunday whom we may not know at all.So why name tags? Simply put, we hope to build a greater sense of community, a greater sense that each person is this community is valued and cherished and respected. And because of that, we should know your name.

This nametag was found in the Church when cleaning up after October's 'Nametag Sunday.' We think it says a lot about who we are, who we should be and what our actions say to those around us. Thank you to whoever wrote it and left it.Al l i t takes is a smi le and a hel lo

Stewardship . . . moving us closer to GodThis Saturday and Sunday we honor those who have gone before us and have been models of Christianity.Saturday is the Solemnity of All Saints. On this day we celebrate those who have been officially recognized by the Church as radiant examples of lives devoted to love of God and service to others; a stewardship way of life. These were courageous people, some giving their lives for the Church, others working tirelessly for the poor and downtrodden. All Saints Day is the day to honor these beacons of the Church. On Sunday we observe the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed or All Souls Day, as it is commonly called. This day is a recognition and celebration of all those who lived faith-filled lives and are now in the presence of the Lord. Their lives may not seem as glorious as the lives of the Saints but their way of life was one that all of us should hope to emulate. In fact as we commemorate All Souls Day, the message in our readings can be condensed into one word: Hope. The middle of the first reading from Book of Wisdom

contains this statement: “yet is their hope full of immortality.” I n t e r e s t i n g l y this is the first time the word “immor ta l i t y ” appears in the

Bible. Our hope in the Lord is completely connected to our belief in everlasting life. In the second reading St. Paul begins his message to the Romans with “Hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit . . .” (Romans 5:5) The Gospel of John continues the theme of hope with the simple phrase “Our hope is in the Lord.”Having Hope is a great attribute, but where do we pull the strength to maintain it? These two days remind us that we are surrounded by models of Christian living. They might be canonized saints or departed family members or friends. Celebrate all of them this weekend with prayer and strive to imitate the goodness of their lives.

For this reason re-training sessions are scheduled for all current altar servers as part of their on-going formation.Servers need to attend only one of the meetings listed here.

Tuesday – November 4, 3:15 - 4:45PM

Thursday – November 6, 3:15 - 4:45PM

Saturday – November 8, 9:00 - 10:15aM

Attendance at one of the sessions is mandatory in order for servers to update their knowledge of this ministry. This will enable servers to perform their duties/responsibilities with reverence and decorum without disrupting the sacred space of the altar.Servers should be aware of these changes so they are able to assist at the altar with simplicity and confidence remembering to keep the liturgy Christ-centered.Please sign up in Sign Up Genius when invited.PARENTS: Please encourage your son or daughter in their role as altar server to respond during the liturgy by reciting prayers and singing songs.QueStionS? rciA This weekend, 27 candidates in the RCIA program were accepted into our Catholic faith. From this point forward it is the responsibility of this community to embrace these catechumens and candidates. They received an RCIA lapel pin which they will wear to Mass. If you see an individual wearing one, please welcome them and continue to pray for them as they journey towards full initiation at Easter.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN Inform school staff about your children’s health issues

“Back-to-school does not have to mean back-to-worrying. Though safety inside school is ultimately the responsibility of the principal and school staff, parents can take a few basic steps to ensure a safe school experience.”

Inform school staff about health and emotional concerns. Whether your child has a food allergy, a physical disability, or has been subject to bullying, make sure to keep your child's teachers and principal in the loop.
