Experience the wonder of the Oregon Coast
Cannon Beach, on the north coast of Oregon, has long been a popular vacation destination. On the ocean and close to the mountains, it offers the best of both worlds: surfing, swimming (if you have a wet suit and are very brave!), hiking, climbing, picnicking, fishing and just plain beach walking. The beauty of the beach rivals the beaches of Sydney, Rio and the best of Southern California for sugar sand and scenery. Traveling from north to south on the beach, you will see the “Bird Rocks” first and finish your walk with the smaller monoliths of Silver Point; however, you won’t be on the beach very long without noticing Haystack Rock, our most famous landmark. It is a spectacular monolith, rising at midpoint on the beach. The Rock and its “needles” provide endless hours of enjoyment for tidepool fanciers and birdwatchers.
Nature lovers and beachwalkers are not the only visitors who will find Cannon Beach delightful. The town is filled with interesting and unique shops, a great theater, fine lodging, excellent restaurants and art galleries galore, many featuring original
works of two dimensional art, sculpture and wearable art created by regional artists. When your aesthetic side is satisfied, you may also rent a bike or a horse, work out at the Athletic Club, rent a video or pamper yourself with a relaxing day at a spa. Any day of the year is a good time to visit Cannon Beach, but there are a few times that are very special: Puffin Kite Festival in the spring, Sandcastle Day (the date changes each year, but it is usually in June), a dog show in October where fun matters much more than pedigree (there are prizes for best trick, best bark, best costume, and owner look-alike!), Stormy Weather Arts Festival on the first weekend of November and Haystack Holidays starting the first Saturday in December. Of course, Summer is one continuous festival of beach fun, sun, ice cream cones, gentle breezes, gorgeous sunsets and all the other things that spell Vacation!
Not to be missed is Ecola State Park, at the north end of Cannon Beach. It is a Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery Historic Site, but, even better than that, it provides fabulous views both north and south, espe-cially of Tillamook Rock Lighthouse. The Lighthouse is no longer operational; it is now a columbarium. Yes, Virginia, that means a place where people’s ash-es are kept! There is a two-mile trail down to Indian Beach - a perfect place for a picnic, and, when the tide is right, you can take the Tillamook Head Trail to Seaside. Whatever you like to do, you can do it here - even if it’s nothing!
