IN YOUR HANDS(WHERE DO HUMAN RIGHTS BEGIN?)

Text from Eleanor Roosevelt (1884-1962) Music by Abbie Betinis (b.1980) with additional lyrics by Eric Bartlett

Narrator: I am here on behalf of thirty-two national organizations representing millions of citizens -- of all faiths; of every complexion; in all parts of the United States. The devotion of so many Americans to human rights is symbolized by this guide to community action. It is a spontaneous and resounding answer to the United Nations’ call for world-wide observances of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We believe that the destiny of human rights is in the hands of all our citizens in all our communities. Such are the places where every man, woman, and child seeks equal justice, equal opportunity, equal dignity without discrimination. Without concerted citizen action to uphold [these rights] close to home, we shall look in vain for progress in the larger world. Where, after all, do universal human rights begin? In small places, close to home -- so close and so small that they cannot be seen on any map of the world. Yet they are the world of the individual person: the neighborhood he lives in; the school or college he attends; the factory, farm or office where he works. Unless these rights have meaning there, they have little meaning anywhere. 1

Chorus: Not in a corporate boardroom, Not from a lawmaker’s pen, Nor from a thundering gavel Judging our women and men. 2

(refrain) Where do human rights begin? …in your hands, in your hands

In the hands of ev’ry citizen. …in your hands, in your hands

Unless these rights have meaning there, They have little meaning anywhere.

Where do human rights begin? In your hands. 3

Hands clasp hands in greeting In factory, school and field. In small places close to Home, Our pact of Love is sealed. 4567891011

1 Eleanor Roosevelt, at her presentation of "IN YOUR HANDS: A Guide for Community Action for the Tenth Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights." 27 March, 1958. United Nations, New York. Edited and abridged by Abbie Betinis (AB). 2 Original text by Eric Bartlett (EB). 3 Compiled by EB from Eleanor Roosevelt’s UN speech above.4 Original text by EB. 5 From Eleanor Roosevelt’s speech 10 December 1949 in Carnegie Hall, New York on the first anniversary of the adoption of Universal Declaration of Human Rights: “One of the fundamental human rights is freedom for the individual. Freedom can never be absolute because it must be consistent with the freedom of others. But the more observance there is of human rights – the more freedom the individual will have.” Archives of Franklin D. Roosevelt Library and Museum, tape #50-106:3. (transcribed AB) 6 From ER’s “Remarks to the Americans for Democratic Action on Individual Liberty”, 2 April 1950, Washington, DC. “There's one thing always frightens me, and that is that our communist representatives in the United Nations never talk about liberty. They never mention it. On one occasion, when Mr. Vishinsky was forced to do so he said that was a foolish thing to talk about because no one could have liberty. But you and I know quite well that everyone's liberty is conditioned by the rights of other people.” Recording from the Anna Eleanor Roosevelt Papers, Franklin Delano Roosevelt Library, Hyde Park, New York (transcribed by the Eleanor Roosevelt Papers Project, George Washington Univ.) 7 Special thanks to Kela Wanyama for thinking of the word “align” in paraphrasing Eleanor Roosevelt’s speech above. 8 Original text by EB and AB. Inspired also by Eleanor Roosevelt’s My Day column 5 Feb 1952: “I had a rather touching appeal the other day from a French curate whose old church bell was cracked in ringing in the liberation. He wonders if anyone in the U.S. would raise the money so he could have the bell recast. It would be an undertaking far beyond the means of his small parish.” © 1952, by United Feature Syndicate, Inc. (In 1947, Roosevelt had also used her My Day column to raise $800 for a church bell for a French missionary in Africa. ~AB) 9 Original text by EB. 10 Paraphrased from ER’s Commencement Address at Sarah Lawrence College, 7 June 1957, Bronxville, NY: “We must strive in each generation to build a greater understanding of our fellow human beings. It will take the best that you have . . . You will always be striving for something which is beyond what you can do alone. . . . I wish for you the belief that when you need help you can always get it from a strength beyond your own, if your purposes are pure and good. I wish for you a sense of adventure in the life before you. I wish for you a lack of fear because fear leads to destruction. I wish for you faith in the future, hope for a better world and above all a determination to use your lives to the best of the capacities that God has given you. May you go forth with courage and may you have happiness and joy in the life that you will live.” 11 Original text by EB.

Narrator: One of the fundamental human rights is freedom for the individual. Freedom can never be absolute because it must be consistent with the freedom of others.5 Everyone's liberty is conditioned by the rights of other people.6 But the more observance there is of human rights, the more freedom the individual will have. 5

Chorus: Freedom can never be absolute, It must align with the freedom of others. 7 When Liberty rings from a broken Bell It must be forged anew, to ring out true

For all our sisters and brothers… 8

Reach across the barriers,Through the spaces that divide To grasp the hands of strangers And become a rising tide. 9

Soloist: May you go forth with courage, persistence and joy, Faith in the future no fear can destroy, With a purpose that’s pure and good, with a strength beyond your own, May you always be striving for something

you can’t do alone. 10

Chorus: See the icy ramparts melt When our hands embrace. Throw open wide the steely doors Rend the thawing gates! 11

(refrain)

12 IN YOUR HANDS — Abbie Betinis

[Note: This is a space for addressing the audience directly with more local specifics (e.g. where to find more info on human rights, we're so proud of X congressperson, please help us raise money for... please help us thank...). The choir could greet members of the audience (shake hands, high 5), or -- like Eleanor Roosevelt did -- pass out copies of the Universal Declarations of Human Rights.]
