About the Author
Commissioner Ryuubi
The day was hot as Kou stepped out of his house.
The street was desolate enough on a regular day with the
many private traditional, wooded estates that lined the
cobbled road. As today was a national holiday, not a soul
occupied the street apart from the palanquin moving down
the road in his direction. Kou loosened his kimono slightly
and puffed on his pipe. He stood fully erect and looked up
at the scorching sun with his narrow, black elven eyes. His
young face perspired easily as small droplets of water
condensed on the edges of his long, thin mustache. At his
side, a belt around his hip supported both a katana and a
wakizashi. He wiped his face, made yet another puff on the
pipe and achieved no more than a single step away from

his gate before the palanquin stopped abruptly in his path.
The palanquin, a kobe, was of low quality. Dirty
white cloths attached to the simple wood pieces served as
blinds. The two men that lifted the contraption had their
loincloths and light white happi coats soaked in sweat and
exuded a slight odor. They nervously set the kobe down
about five feet from Kou whose eyes were wide with
curiosity. The moment the palanquin hit the ground the cloth
blinds flew apart and, to Kous surprise, a dark majestic
figure emerged. Nearly dropping his pipe in shock Kou
glanced both left and right, as if searching for the person
for whom the palanquin was actually stopping. Standing
before him now was a young man, early twenties perhaps
if not for his elven descent that added at least a hundred
years to his age, dressed in just black and red garments.
He wore his robes as a trench coat of sorts, the two colors
mixed to form an elaborate depiction of raging flames.
Matching the pattern of his robes from hilt to sheath was a
katana strapped to his left side. From his waist down was
the darkness of a black hakama, socks and sandals. The
leggings swooshed as he walked over to one of the lifters.
Retrieving a small satchel from the confines of his clothing,
he pulled a few gold pieces out and commandingly offered
them to the sweating men. The two men accepted the

gold, bowed deeply and quickly departed. Then the young
man walked majestically towards Kou.
The young mans eyes were alight with eagerness.
He strode to the gate with a slight smirk. His brown skin
bore no signs of sweat in the oppressive heat though his
short, thin black hair betrayed a hint of moisture that
glistened in the glare of the sunlight. The charismatic aura
of a leader radiated from him as he approached the gate.Captain Kou Mine, he said with a brimming smile.
It truly is a pleasure to see you in good health, sir.
No, my liege, the pleasure is undoubtedly mine,
Kou responded with a dumbfounded expression, his color
slightly drained. May I ask what brings you here today,
your majesty? He asked the question shyly, with soft
voice.
I will be honest with you, captain. I have escaped
from the palace and wish for you to conceal me, the
young man said sternly.
Color restored to the captains face as he took yet
another puff on his pipe and blew the smoke away from his
royal visitor. He took another quick glance around before
ushering his guest inside.
