HAPPY DECEMBER BIRTHDAY

A message from the Rear Commodore….. First of all I have 2 mea culpas of sorts: At our Annual Meeting on November 4th. I erroneously called the Appalachian Mountain Club, the "Adirondack" Mountain Club. The Appalachian Mountain Club (a primarily conservation, mountaineering and hiking club) has a lodge or cabin in Atlantique on Fire Island which offers water related activities such as canoeing, kayaking, sailing, etc. For more infor-mation go to: http://outdoors.org The other one concerns Meetup.com listings; I couldn't remember the store in Lake Grove which "colludes" (pun intended) with Meetup .com and sponsors various outdoor activities throughout the year, including water related ones, (too many to list here). Are you ready for this? -- and the store is L.L.Bean in Lake Grove. Go to: L.L.Bean Lake Grove, NY | Outdoor, Camping and Clothing Store On another topic: Celebrate New Years Eve (December 31, 2018) at Nocellos, our regular "LISSA Social" venue. Featuring: Fran and Jack's Blue Angel Band. From 7:30 P.M. to 1:00 A.M. Included are: Hors d'oeuvres on your table upon arrival, Appetizer, Salad. Choice of 4 Entrees, Dessert, coffee/Tea, Champagne Toast, Hats and Noisemakers. Cost: $85.00 plus tax and tip. Drink Packages are available. George

Annual Meeting: Thanks to Billy Vassel for his arranging for the food for our Annual Meeting held on November 4th. Ideas were put forth and it was a very productive meeting. Election was held and the Secretary cast her one vote. The Board remains the same as last year with one exception— CeCe Moffitt joins Peter Aiello as our Vice Commodores. Welcome CeCe. Bermuda was a delight. The weather was sunny and warm enough to go swimming on the pink sand of Horseshoe Beach. The 5 hour bus tour showed us the entire island, as seen from the main road. Picturesque, of course, and quite up-scale in most cases. Interestingly, all the houses on Bermuda are made of poured concrete. The limestone roofs catch and purify all the rainwater and deliver it to a tank beneath the house. Smart and simple. There isn’t a wooden structure any-where. Even the bus shelters are made of stone. The island is hurricane proof. Oh, the boat… At a build cost of 1.2 billion dollars, Royal Caribbean’s “Anthem Of The Seas” is the 2nd largest cruise ship in the world. It’s a very impressive monster with plenty of ways to entertain and separate you from your money. The Royal Esplanade was filled with high end boutiques, jewelry stores and expensive restaurants. But we didn’t spend that much on food or drinks. We watched that carefully be-cause drinks were all more or less about $14.00 ea. Fairly insane. But if you enjoy adult beverages however, their $400.00 drink package is the way to go. If you’re a theater lover, “Anthem” will not disappoint. If you like Broadway shows and music, this boat is a masterpiece. I have never seen anything like it. The singing and dancing, the special effects and the intensity of the lighting was dazzling, much like what you can see in Times Square at night. I was amazed. Well, it ’s a high tech world after all. It’s a big boat. Lots of walking but, all and all, it was a very pleasant week. One morning, at 6:00 AM, we received a wake-up call BY MISTAKE. I said to the guy, “We didn’t order a wake-up call. It’s 6am and you woke us up!” I was a little short with the poor fellow and hung up. Well, the next day, coming back to our state room, there was a bottle of Champagne, a dozen chocolate strawberries, and a box of candy, with a note of apology. Hey… Call me every morning! That was a very nice apology, don’t you think?..... Howard Birthday Babies Dinner: 15 of us gathered at the Sonoma Grill Wednesday night to enjoy a terrific meal. I ordered the steak rare, which came to me correctly prepared but it was cut into tid-bits which makes it no longer really a steak. It was good enough. But I would have had the salmon had I known this in advance. Everyone had a good time. A hearty thank you to Jeff Feiner for hosting the evening.
