[Enclosed letter headed "Gallipoli Peninsula/Oct 8th 1915" mentions "...justnow we are out of the trenches for a spell after a month of them" and rather ironically predicts "... the job [will be]finished so far as the Eastern Front is concerned ..." and "We will all be home for Christmas": the decision toevaculate Gallipoli was made in November 1915 and completed by 20.12.1915, and is considered as tactically themost (only?) successful part of the whole operation; those evacuated spent Christmas on Lemnos Island, Greece]

1908 Postal Cards for the Visit of the American "Great White Fleet"These cards were so attractive that most were retained unused as souvenirs of the event. Commercially used examples are consequentlyvery scarce to rare. The visit of the American Fleet to Sydney and Melbourne attracted enormous publicity and generated the largestcrowds ever assembled in Australia to that time. Reference is made to Hugh Freeman's comprehensive collection sold by Prestige on23.9.2011. See also Lot 560 in Part One for related PPCs.

Lot 1989- (Aug 13) entire headed "Ship Georgianna" from an officer to his Lieut-General father in Wiltshire "Per ShipPyramus", fine strike of the small oval 'HOBART TOWN/VDL' h/s, British 'INDIA LETTER/FALMOUTH' boxed b/s &superb 'SALISBURY/JA24/1830' arrival b/s, rated "1/11", forwarded to Devon. [The son now fears being "...put onhalf-pay...unless strong interest is made to have me promoted..." Then, pushing his luck, "I should like to bepromoted into a Regiment stationed either in this place, The Cape of Good Hope or the Mauritius"]

The begging letters apparently failed to do the trick. In 1831 Slade retired from the army & headed for NSW where hewas appointed Superintendent of the Convict Barracks at Hyde Park. In 1834, he was forced to resign over his brutaltreatment of convicts.
