1908 Postal Cards for the Visit of the American "Great White Fleet"These cards were so attractive that most were retained unused as souvenirs of the event. Commercially used examples are consequentlyvery scarce to rare. The visit of the American Fleet to Sydney and Melbourne attracted enormous publicity and generated the largestcrowds ever assembled in Australia to that time. The begging letters apparently failed to do the trick. In 1831 Slade retired from the army & headed for NSW where hewas appointed Superintendent of the Convict Barracks at Hyde Park. In 1834, he was forced to resign over his brutaltreatment of convicts.
