Congratulations on your acceptance to the outstanding College of Communication at The University of Texas at Austin! The College of Communication is one of the greatest places to begin the rest of your life. The people here are exemplary and Communication Council is right in the middle. We are a diverse group of student leaders that represents all six majors within the college and ranges in classification from first-semester freshmen to graduating seniors. Council becomes a family as we address student concerns and facilitate interactions between students, faculty, and staff in the college. It has been the best choice I've made so far in college and I know that we have made a difference. College can be a great and scary place, but if you just find your niche, these next four years can be some of the best. Hopefully Council can be that niche for you. -Ashley Bingham Communication Council President

Three buildings comprise the Jesse H. Jones Communication Center: CMA building, which contains classrooms and department, faculty, and staff offices; CMB building, which hosts college studio space, KUT radio and KLRU public television; and the HSM building , home to Texas Student Publications, the Daily Texan, KVRX Student Radio, and KVR-TV. The Belo Center for New Media is the latest edition to the College of Communication, and provides classrooms, a 300-person auditorium, rooms for student organizations, as well as a multi-media digital room, lounge, and café. With the inauguration of the Walter Cronkite Plaza, the College showcases the beautiful marriage of architecture and technology.

Graduation might seem far off, but if you’re not careful, it will sneak up on you. Your key to success as a UT communications student will be your ability to combine your academic coursework with your jobs, internships, student organization involvement and other extracurricular activities to explore your career options and gain experience. Through Communication Career Services’ (CCS) advising services, career exploration programs, online resources, and our recruiting events (like jobs and internship fairs), we help you connect the dots between where you are now and where you want to be when you graduate. CCS won’t get you a job, but we will help you understand your career options, prepare your resume and cover letters, develop your professional networking and interviewing skills, and connect with employers regarding internships and jobs. Connect with CCS early and stay active and involved throughout your academic career, and you will be on track to get a job (or go to graduate school) after you graduate.

1. Ali Martinez, Special Events As the Special Events chair, I'm excited to continue our tradition of winning numerous awards as well as working with a creative group of people. On a more personal note, I'm also looking forward to the experience being a chair will give me, as I'm hoping to get into event planning after I graduate.

2. Wynden Williams, Student Issues and Advisory Committee As the “SIAC” chair I want to continue to bridge the gap between the students and the college administration. I want to work to continue to Increase the number of students who give feedback and attend events by working with the executive board and the other chairs. After being on this committee for three semesters I think that our “Cookies For Comments” and Town Hall campaigns are great, and I want to those develop more.

3. Kimberly Carmona, Outreach My job as Outreach Chair is to bring together the students and faculty in the College of Communication. I plan on continuing traditions such as “Donuts with the Deans”, “Meet the Professor Night” and “Pop Back Into Fall.” I am also planning on creating some new events to bring our college together. Some of these events include giving out candy during Halloween and perhaps having puppies in the Belo plaza for students to pet during finals. I am very excited to bring everyone in our college together.

4. Allie Jensen, Funding I will be FUNding chair and I am so excited for the opportunity. My plans for this year include LOTS of profit shares (who doesn’t love food) and selling stylish major specific and Communication wide t-shirts to the College of Communication to raise money. This has proven to be very successful in the past and I can’t wait to continue the FUNding legacy.

5. Kristen Forburger, Publicity I am going to be the publicity chair this year, which actually caught me by surprise. I was the publicity commissioner of the student government in high school, so I made all the flyers and decorations and what not, but I don’t think that’s what I necessarily will be doing for CC. I know I’m qualified for the job, but it’s defiitely going to be lots of work! I’m so excited to explore the position, and work with the other chairs.

6. Vi Tran, Career and Alumni Relations As the career and alumni relations chair, I plan to design a lecture series that showcases the successful alumni who have graduated from the College of Communication and are currently working in a variety of fields. This will allow students to see the transition from college to “the real world” and the value of their degree. Our college has an endless list of high-achieving alumni and I wanted to make sure current students would have access to these professionals.

7. Ceci Bergstedt, Multimedia By being a chair, my hope is to help new Commies have a great experience like I have had, while capturing all of the memories and fun times in Council. And, of course, I’ll be keeping up the tradition of making hilarious videos! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------

?Allie Jensen, Communication Sciences and Disorders I chose to be a CSD major focusing in Speech Pathology because, as a child, I wanted to do something in the health field, but also to do something with a focus in a communications. CSD was the perfect match for me since it encompassed my two passions. I love how relatively small the major is compared to others and how distinguished and knowledgeable my professors are. It is truly enjoyable going to my CSD classes everyday and learning something new and important.

Kimberley Carmona, Journalism I always enjoyed the art of storytelling, reading the newspaper, catching up on entertainment news. I was an active member of the Journalism team in high school, and during my senior year, I realized that I was meant to be journalism major. After taking a few classes in the department, I found that my favorite thing about my major is that you can do much more than just write. Thanks to my professors, I do not have to settle with just print writing. I can use my skills to make a variety of storytelling techniques, which is the best thing about my major.

7

Page 9: Communication Council Summer '13 Newsletter

Vi Tran, Public Relations I chose to pursue PR because it encompasses a variety of skills including critical thinking, strategic writing, and business management. What I like most is its versatility, which is based on one concept: to provide a mutually beneficial relationship between an organization and its publics through the use of storytelling.

Kaitlyn Clark, Communication Studies (Political) I chose CMS because I thought it would be the best way to ensure that I learned skills that would be valuable in a communications role in campaigns or political offices. Through classes about speechmaking and lying & deception, I've had the opportunity to learn how politicians really think. It has already proven valuable to have these skills in my internship at the Texas Capitol.

Nathan Waters, Radio- Television-Film I’ve been making films since I was 13. I love to make people laugh and to teach a mass audience through entertainment. I feel as if comedians are the philosophers of our day, and are psychologically able to bypass the mental blocks we place. I see huge potential in comedy as a pedagogy tool and as a medium for inspiration.

Derek Peet, Advertising I chose to be an advertising major because I wanted to be able to remain creative throughout my career. I hope that advertising will allow me to have a structured and professional career while still having fun. I really like the program because I have learned the science behind advertising. I am being taught everything there is to know and the professors are very involved and are easy to approach.
