“Learn to use emails, phone calls, and group collaboration tools to effectively work with your leadership team, as well as reaching out to your members to get them involved.”
Communicate Your Purpose
• The ability to communicate effectively is perhaps the greatest tool a leader has.
• It’s your job as a leader to convince others that the program of the OA is worth one’s time, energy, and money.
Types of Communication
Passive• Something that is
presented for members to find
Active
• Something sent to or something that reaches out to members
Passive
• Website: Great way to post information, have an “official source” of info, always evolving, and location for contact information. • Facebook: Posting things on Pages,
where users don’t get notifications. • Posted Flyers: At camp, at
roundtable, etc.• Anything else?
Active
• Facebook Group: A little more involved than a page – members get notifications for posts.
• Nimat: Great way to get something out to every member, but needs to be short and can’t be time sensitive.
• Emails: Good for people who are already involved or getting information to attendees.
• Phone Calls: Infinitely better for people involved, takes time but has a personable touch.
• Face to Face meetings: The best way to go, such as chapter meetings or campouts, unit elections.
• Anything else?
Group Collaboration
There are tons on online services available to work on and share documents. Every service is different, but there are two main types:Services like Yahoo Groups and Wiggio are set up to host documents and send messages to members.Dropbox, Skydrive, and Google Docs are more toward hosting and updating documents, and sharing constant updates.
Working with your team
• Take advantage of Group Collaboration tools
• Motivate your team (Event Staff, CEC, etc)– Involvement: giving someone a position of
leadership keeps them involved– Importance: give them meaningful work that
they can be proud of– Valued: Take time to listen to ideas and hear
out opinions and viewpoints
• Delegate but oversee• Follow up when you assign a task
