CalendarHUNTERDON HEALTHCARE LAUNCHES NURSE RECOGNITION PROGRAM

The DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses Hunterdon Healthcare is proud to announce the launch of an international nurse recognition program called, The DAISY Award. The award is part of the DAISY Foundation’s

program to recognize the clinical skill and the compassion nurses provide to patients and families every day.

June is Men’s Health Month, an annual awareness period solely dedicated to education and activities on the health and wellness of men.

Raising awareness of the need for men to live healthy lifestyles is critical to their well-being. The life expectancy for men is five years less than women, and men also have higher rates of death from cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports women are 100% more likely to visit their healthcare provider for annual exams and preventative services than men. By breaking through the reluctance to see a health provider, men can live healthier lives.

On Saturday, June 8, 2019, Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center will host a Men’s Health Breakfast Program at Hunterdon Medical Center from 8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. This men-only program provides a safe and open discussion environment for men to talk freely about their health concerns and get answers from experts in the field.

The program will feature presentations by Brian Sperling, D.O., a board certified urologist for Hunterdon Urological Associates, and Howard Garson, M.D., a board certified gastroenterologist for Advanced Gastroenterology & Nutrition. Dr. Sperling specializes in men’s health and Dr. Garson specializes in digestive health and cancer prevention.

“Awareness and early intervention are both key in preventing chronic diseases, including many types of cancer, impacting men. Community-based outreach programs like the men’s breakfast event are crucial in initiating conversations and leading men to be more engaged in, and in control of, their health,” said Barbara Tofani, DNP, RN, Administrative Director Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. “Promoting education to help men lead longer lives through preventative health practices is something we care about and are involved in. Recognizing June as Men’s Health Month provides a valuable opportunity to bring attention to the importance of preventative care and practicing a healthy lifestyle.”

For Men Only: Men’s Health Breakfast Program

On May 6, 2019, every patient at Hunterdon Medical Center received a bouquet of daises to kickoff nursing week and the launch of this new award that Hunterdon Healthcare is adopting. The daisies were generously donated by Dr. Reinhard Schwartz and Dr. Helga Schwartz. In addition, The Molle family and Hunterdon Healthcare’s Professional Development Council helped to provide funding as well.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, CA, and was established by family members in memory of J. Patrick Barnes. Patrick died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Bonnie Barnes, FAAN, President and Co-Founder of The DAISY Foundation said, “When Patrick was critically ill, our family experienced first-hand the remarkable skill and care nurses provide patients every day and night. Yet these unsung heroes are seldom recognized for the super-human work they do. The kind of work the nurses throughout Hunterdon Healthcare are called on to do every day epitomizes the purpose of The DAISY Award.”

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses has been adopted by 3,500 health care facilities and schools of nursing in all 50 states and 21 other countries, committed to honoring their nurses for their extraordinary care and compassion. Individual nurses may be nominated by patients, families, and colleagues and they are chosen by a Hunterdon Healthcare committee.

“We are proud to be among the healthcare organizations participating in the DAISY Award program. Nurses are heroes every day. It’s important that our nurses know their work is highly valued, and The DAISY Foundation provides a way for us to do that,” explained Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Care Services, Patricia Steingall, MS, RN, NE-BC .

DAISY Award recipients are presented with a certificate, a DAISY Award pin, a beautiful, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, and a spotlight page on The DAISY Foundation website, featuring a photo and telling the story of why this nurse was honored. In addition, each DAISY Award facility will receive a large celebratory banner that is hung in the recipient’s unit for a month.

At each award presentation, all the nurses and staff in the recipient’s unit are treated to cinnamon rolls. The reason? Once, Patrick ate his father’s cinnamon roll when he was in the hospital without an appetite for food. He then requested one for the next day - and enough for all the nurses in the unit.
