October 2020 Vol. 13 No. 10 • Circulation: 2085 September HOA Board Highlights The Board held a Zoom meeting on Monday, September 14th. Five members participated as we still have a vacancy and one member was unable to attend. We have found a potential solution for those times when we are short a per- son to deliver newsletters on their route. We have approved paying teens from our Teen Services listing a flat rate depending on the size of the route. We have done this once with great success. This will be our backup plan until such time as we can find replacement volunteers. The HOA website was successfully switched from a national server to a local server and upgraded to provide a secure server license. Similarly, our email addresses have also been switched. We thank Rich Ferris for coordinating this change. The total cost of the transfer and new license was under $230. We are planning to hold a community cleanup event on Saturday, September 26 from 8:00 a.m. until noon along Hampden Avenue between Fire Station No. 7 and Kalispell Street. Volunteers will help rake, weed, and trim shrubs and bushes. No rock this year! Our second dumpster day will be held on Saturday, October 10 at Holy Love Church from 8:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. A separate article in this newsletter describes more detail. Due to COVID-19 Cherry Creek Schools will not allow us to use the elementary school gymnasium for the winter hayride this year. We are looking at possibly postponing the event until sometime next year. Maybe a Winter Hayride in July? If you would be interested in serving on the HOA Board, we have need of one person to fill the position that Twila Filipiak held until she moved. Please contact any board member if you would like more info on how to join us. October 10: Dumpster Day The HOA has scheduled second 2020 Dumpster Day for Saturday, October 10 at Holy Love Church, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. HOA members with proof of membership (a 2020 discount card, paid dues or current- ly listed under the Waste Connections customer listing) can bring their unwanted items for disposal into two trash trucks that morning. The event will only be three hours long this year. Volunteers will help the drivers check for eligible members to dispose of their trash and debris. Waste Connections has provided the following list of items that cannot be accepted: electronics tires/auto parts/oil/gas wet paint medical waste anything with Freon or gases (refrigerators/freezers) florescent tubes or compact florescent light bulbs hazardous or toxic waste batteries Community Calendar: Check us out on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/448363365762307 Visit our website: http://www.missionviejohoa.org/ October HOA Board Meeting – October 13, 6:30 p.m. by Zoom until further notice October 10 – Dumpster Day October 17 – Community Cleanup Part 2 Winter Hayride – Postponed until further notice Hampden Cleanup #2 The HOA is sponsoring a second cleanup on October 17 to follow the first which occurred September 26. Mission Viejo Library Seeking Donations The Mission Viejo Library is now open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6p.m. Residents can come into the building and stay for an hour or so and browse through books, use the computers, and check out books. Residents also can check out books on week days without stepping inside the library from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. using the curbside pickup. In last month’s newsletter article, “Mission Viejo Library is Open” there was a mistake. The article stated that the Mission Viejo library was not accepting donations of puzzles at this time. That is incorrect. There actually is a need for puzzles at the library now, so feel free to donate!

Discount Program This year the HOA Board is continuing to make a concert-ed effort to increase the number of merchants participating in our Discount Program. Please check our website http://www. missionviejohoa.org/discounts.html for more information about each business and the discount they offer. If you are interested or know of a merchant who might like to be asked to join the program, please contact any of the Board members or send an email to [email protected]. We’ll take it from there!

Mission Viejo Newsletter History The Mission Viejo Newsletter was begun in April of 2007. If you would like to see the first issue and every issue since then, look at the Mission Viejo HOA website. All of the newsletter issues are there. From April 2007 to February of 2009 the newsletter was distribut-ed by a company that was hired by the HOA at a cost of $300 a month. In January at the annual meeting 20 people volunteered to deliver the newsletter. In March those 20 volunteers began to deliver the news-letter, and there are 4 volunteers that still deliver: Dala Giffen, Chris Hammeren, Lois and Jerry Kiefer and Elaine Lay. These volunteers have saved the HOA $36,000 in the past 12 years. The newsletter is now printed by Colorado Lasertype at no cost to our HOA. They receive payment from the people that advertise in the newsletter. Without the support of these advertisers, we would not have a newsletter, and we would see little gains to our growing sense of community. Please support these advertisers whenever you can. You might wonder who writes all of the articles for the news-letters. The articles are written by the members of the HOA board and MV resident Mary Edet who has been editing and preparing the newsletter to be sent to Colorado Lasertype for printing since 2012. If you would like to write an article about a neighborhood happening, please let one of the board members know or get in touch with Mary at [email protected]. We welcome information on neigh-borhood happenings and are always seeking to hear the voices of our community members! We also welcome volunteers to deliver the newsletters. It is a great way to get exercise and also to help our neighborhood continue to be the special placethat it is. If you would like to volunteer, please con-tact Kathy Bitzer at [email protected].

Nine New Homeowners in September! The HOA Welcome committee welcomed 9 new fam-ilies to the neighborhood in September. The average price of their homes was $396,285. This was the first house for the couple on South Nucla Way. They moved here from Centennial prior to living in Omaha. They said they were looking more for a yard with a house to have room for all of their pets. They were happy that their new house was in excellent condition for moving in! The family that moved into a house on South Helena Way had been saving their money to buy a house and were happy to move in! They had been in the Denver Metro area previously. Another couple that moved in on South Lewiston Street were also in their first home. One of the couples that moved in had already read the newsletter and had already hired Waste Connections for their trash service. It is fun to welcome these new people! Sometimes we get to meet the neighbors while trying to determine if the people have moved in or not. Connie met a handyman and got his card while looking for the new homeowner on South Laredo Way. Welcome to all the new homeowners, and if you hap-pen to live on any of these streets mentioned or know of some new neighbors on your street, be sure to say HI!

Calm After the StormSM

Proudly Serving Colorado Since 1984

Volunteers on Short Supply Mission Viejo has approximately 2000 homes. Many of us have lived here for over 30 years. There are approximately 10 homes sold every month, which adds up to 120 new families moving in every year. It is safe to say that we love our neighborhood. Otherwise there would be a lot more people leaving. In addition, our home values have risen substantially in the last few years. So why does it seem that no one wants to keep our neighborhood looking good and appreciating in value? When we try to get volunteers for a Beautification Grant or just for a neighborhood clean-up, it is almost impossible to find anyone willing to give up 4 hours of their time to help. This is not a new problem. It has been happening for years! In the last 2 newsletters we have asked for volunteers to help clean up Hampden on September 26. Three people have volunteered! It is hard to determine if no one has the time or if no one reads the newslet-ter… Or is it that no one cares?? Members of the HOA Board try so hard to keep the neighborhood connected and looking good. We try to make the newsletter interesting and relatable to the lives of people that live here. The most interest that we have had in the past 10 years is when our library was about to be shut down. It can be a discouraging and thankless job serving on the board. If anyone has any suggestions or ideas that can help the board become more relevant to our neighborhood, we would welcome your sugges-tions. If there are suggestions, please send them to one of the members of the board and they will be published in next month’s newsletter. We also welcome people to attend our monthly HOA meetings. If you want to be included in the upcoming months, get in touch with Dave Goss at [email protected] to get your Zoom link!

This month’s neighborhood trivia question is: Do you know who is in charge of the wonderful Veteran’s Day program at Mission Viejo Elementary School? If you know the answer to this question, email it to [email protected] and be sure to include your name and address! The question in last month’s newsletter was: What year did the HOA file suit against the city because the city was in breach of a 1973 agreement with the HOA that stated that the library service would be furnished for a minimum of 50 years? The answer was 2010. 3 people had the correct answer and JERRY KIEFER was the lucky winner of the $10! Congratulations, JERRY!!! Alan Engels also participated and gave a perfect answer, but his name was not drawn. His answer was: “The library was closed at the end of 2009. The HOA filed suit in 2010, and I served as the principle contact for the Friends of Mission Viejo Library which had a ballot measure in an effort to provide funding to the library. Before the election, the City announced that it would reopen the library in 2011.” It was because of the hard work of the HOA board, residents in the commu-nity, and the volunteers who were part of the Friends of Mission Viejo Library that the city settled the issue and reopened the library. The city ultimately saw the passion that residents in Mission Viejo and surrounding communities had in keeping the library open. While the ballot measure did not pass, the margin was less than 10%. The city ultimately decided to open the library rather than face the HOA in court. The 50 year agreement with the builder and the city transferred ownership of the property to the city after 30 or 35 years. So the city felt it had the right to do what it wanted with the property, unaware that the HOA had a copy of the original agreement with the builder.

Save the Date: Veteran’s Day Parade: November 11 On Wednesday, November 11, Mission Viejo will be celebrating Veteran’s Day for the 15th year. Just like everything else during the Covid 19 pandemic, this year’s celebration will be different than year’s past. Since visitors are not able to enter the build-ing, the students will be out of the building watching a parade. The details have not been completely firmed up yet. But, judging from past years events, this promises to be a day that students, veterans and participants and Mission Viejo residents will remember. More information about the event will be in next month’s newsletter!! Stay tuned!

Few great authors spring up overnight. Most work odd jobs while they struggle to create. The Literacy Site shares these stories of the famous before they became famous: • Langston Hughes. The would-be poet worked as a busboy

at a prestigious Washington, D.C. hotel. One day the well-known poet Vachel Lindsay came to lunch, and Hughes worked up enough courage to show her some of his poems. Lindsay was impressed by his talent, which led to him being discovered and going on to lead the Harlem Renaissance.

• Kurt Vonnegut. The future author of Slaughterhouse-5 and other classics owned the first Saab dealership in the U.S. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army during the World War II, which had a major impact on his later writing.

• J.D. Salinger. Before breaking onto the literary scene, the author of The Catcher in the Rye and other classics worked as entertainment director on a Swedish cruise ship.

Snowball Approach To Debt Many of us are dealing with staggering debt these days, but that doesn’t mean you should just give up. On the Kare11 website, financial advisor Justin Halverson of Great Waters Financial tells how to take control of your debt instead of drowning under it. It’s called the snowball method: “Start by organizing your debts to determine your lowest balance,” Halverson says. “Make the minimum payment on your other debts and use any extra money to pay off your smallest debt. Then pay off your next smallest debt. Like a snowball rolling down a hill, you will build momentum to tackle your debts until they are paid in full.”
