AS THE community and country adapt to the eas-ing of restrictions, things are no different at Chapter HQ where staff are finally able to join the nation in taking a well earned rest from the trials and tribu-lation of the past eight-een months.

To that end, the next couple of weeks will see staff numbers reduce to the point where our papers will also be reduced while annual leave is taken.

We continue to support our advertisers - who in turn are our primary spon-sors - and as such, we will ensure their messages reach the community and that the community has access to the contacts they may need from our local businesses.

News, however, will be limited, but we are hope-ful that the community accepts our apologies for any inconvenience caused by the temporary reduction of service.

We will resume nor-mal service in the week beginning 30th August and when we return, we hope to share some excit-ing new projects we are working on at South West Durham News.

IT HAS been fifteen months since the com-munity gym in the Sports and Social Club in Chilton was last used after it par-tially reopened last week, writes Andy Coulthard.

That’s a long time for some of the regular mem-bers to be missing out on their physical and social fitness.

The seven volunteers who help run the gym met last week and have put in place, alongside the club, the necessary measures to enable the gym to re-open Monday to Friday from 9am until 12 noon for the whole of August.

The evening sessions have had to be put on hold until 6th September as most of the volun-teers are away on holiday during August, so there was not sufficient staff-ing to open morning and evening.

If there are any more volunteers out there will-ing to help out and to do a regular morning or evening shift (evenings

CHILTON COMMUNITY SPORTS AND SOCIAL CLUB GYM RE-OPENS

are from 6 to 8.30pm) then please leave your name and contact details with the club bar staff and we will be in touch.

The gym contains a number of cardio vascu-lar as well as pressure related toning machines adapted especially for those who just want to keep fit and healthy.

Users will be encour-aged to be wary of others space and clean down the machines after each use, whilst the volunteers will have the option of wear-ing masks.

Please enter as before at the main entrance to the club and come down to the gym.

Prices are the same as previous and gym mem-bership will not be re-in-troduced until January next year.

Sports and Social Club membership is yet to be confirmed.

We look forward to see-ing some familiar faces and to welcoming some new visitors.

SING OUT Strong (SOS), the world’s big-gest mental health choir, has launched a new weekly group in Spennymoor Youth and Community Centre.

SOS, as it is fondly known by its members, provides opportunities for people to improve their wellbeing through singing.

The choir started life as a UK family of choirs for mental health and wellbe-ing, back in 2019.

When the pandemic closed down the in-per-son groups, SOS switched to running free, online choir sessions becoming the first UK group to “go virtual”.

Its founder and Princi-pal Conductor is Emma Rowland, a professional choral conductor who suffers from PTSD related

anxiety and depression. Emma set up SOS as a

safe place where people could go along and sing for their wellbeing, but could also be open about their mental health.

Spennymoor’s SOS Choir is being led by Eve-lyn Lodge, who lived in the town for over 20 years and was well known around the area as Cabaret artist, Eve Brown.

“I’ve had a love of music since the age of seven and since retiring from the Cabaret circuit, I’ve kept up singing around the area in local care homes,” said Evelyn.

“My love of singing and playing piano has been long lived, but through experience and studying music therapy, I have built my awareness and knowl-edge of the real health benefits of singing and

music in general.“Everyone in this day and

time has been affected in one way or another and I have seen first-hand the impact music has on many people’s lives.

“I’m looking forward to starting the SOS Spenny Voices on Friday eve-nings at the Youth and Community Centre from 7pm-8.30pm.

“There is parking and great access to the build-ing and the repertoire will be varied and you will be guaranteed a warm wel-come.

“There are no auditions and everyone is welcome.

“Your first session is free and there are free places for carers should you wish to accompany someone in your care.

“This inclusive choir is open to both men and women.”

A RECENT report found that 43% of older LGBT people had no idea where to get support, but a new group based in Durham City is seeking to rectify the problem.

Many older LGBT peo-ple have lived quietly for years, often with a part-ner, but have had no con-tact with the LGBT com-munity.

If they become wid-owed, they can become isolated and vulnerable.

“LGBT+ Over50s County Durham is a social group for older LGBT+ people and their allies,” said a

and would like to meet new friends, come along and join us for safe, enjoyable conversation and refreshments.

“You can contact us by going to http://www.lgbt50durham.org.uk/ or phoning 0191 303 8604.

“We will also continue to make our case for additional investment and support from Gov-ernment through the levelling up agenda and, over the next few weeks, will be working hard to demonstrate why our county would be a deserving recipient of the title of UK City of Culture for 2025.

“We have a very busy time ahead of us, but if appointed I would give my all to leading the team here at Durham County Council in work-ing to achieve the very best for our residents and all those who choose to work, visit and invest here.”

He has also held finan-cial roles at Durham Con-stabulary, and County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service, where he became the deputy chief executive, before moving to South Tyneside, where he was corporate director for business and resources.

Mr Hewitt’s appoint-ment is subject to formal confirmation at a meet-ing of the authority’s full council on Wednesday, 22nd September.

Cllr Amanda Hopgood, Leader of Durham County Council, said: “I would like to congratulate John on being recommended as Chief Executive.

“I look forward to work-ing with him subject to full council approval and wish him every success for the future.”

A NEW Chief Executive looks set to lead Durham County Council, the north east’s largest council.

John Hewitt, from Spennymoor, started his career as a YTS Trainee at the former Sedgefield Borough Council.

He now looks set for the top job after the council’s Chief Officer Appoint-ments Committee advised that Mr Hewitt is their recommended can-didate for Chief Executive following an appointment process.

Mr Hewitt has been interim Chief Executive since December. He joined the authority in 2016 and has overseen the council’s financial response to the coronavi-rus pandemic as well as a wide range of other major projects and initiatives.

He said: “County Dur-ham is a fantastic place, and I am incredibly proud to call it home, so it is a real honour to have been recommended as Chief Executive of the county council.

“The past eight months have given me a good indication of what lies ahead, and I am confident that, with the support and commitment of our team who work across all our services, there is much to look forward to.

“Our response to the pandemic has demon-strated that we are well placed to meet any chal-lenge and, indeed, our recovery from the impact

ducted last year, several priority areas emerged which I have captured in my Police and Crime Plan including anti-social behaviour, road safety and drug use and deal-ing.

“Six broad themes that are covered in the plan include, safer communi-ties, safer people, safer online, safer roads, safer countryside and safer business.

“I am keen to hear ideas and any local concerns about community safety and ways we can improve our approach with the force and partners mov-ing forward.

“I would be grateful to residents, business owners, community and voluntary sector organ-isations across County Durham and Darlington if you could take the time to complete my survey and have your say on what matters most in your community.”

The Commissioner pre-

sented her draft Police and Crime Plan to Durham County Council’s Police and Crime Panel meeting recently.

The panel is made up of councillors and independent members responsible for scrutinis-ing the actions and deci-sions the PCC makes.

She told the panel: “My Police and Crime Plan focuses on people’s pri-orities and how I will work with a wide range of part-ners to reduce crime, vic-timisation, offending and anti-social behaviour.

“I am very much look-ing forward to working with the panel, hearing their views and focusing on resident feedback so I can take action to ensure local communities are safer, stronger and more resilient to crime and anti-social behaviour.”

The survey runs until Thursday 19th August and can be accessed at durham-pcc.gov.uk, along with the draft plan.

DURHAM’S POLICE and Crime Commissioner, Joy Allen is encouraging members of the public to share their views about local policing in County Durham and Darlington.

The Commissioner, who has launched an online survey, is asking resi-dents, businesses, com-munity, and voluntary sector organisations to share their views as she begins to develop a new Police and Crime Plan for the force area.

Once fully developed, the plan will set out the policing and crime pri-orities for the next three years.

PCC Allen said: “Throughout my cam-paign, I spent a lot of time reaching out and listening to the people of County Durham and Dar-lington on their priorities when it comes to local policing.

“From these discus-sions as well as the Crime Survey I con-

FERRYHILL STAGE Soci-ety is back in rehearsals and preparing for their next production, Sleeping Beauty, the Pantomime (oh yes it is!).

The company is looking for keen new members from the age of 5+ to join its acting family.

“If you have a passion for dance, acting or sing-ing, please come along - you will be made very welcome,” said a spokes-

person. Rehearsals take place

on Thursdays from 7pm until 9pm at Mainsforth Community Centre in Fer-ryhill Station.

The first rehearsal is scheduled for Thursday 9th September.

For more information, check out the company’s Facebook page @ferry hillstagesociety or email ferryhillstagesociety@ outlook.com.

STAGE SOCIETY IS BACK

Mark Solan commented that he was overwhelmed with the whole day, and the support from every-one involved.

The event was organ-ised by David Howe, with help and support from Emma Pattison.

A range of activities for the children were available including face painting, a variety of inflatables, a magician, a dinosaur show, and a dance show, plus several stalls.

There was also a foot-ball tournament, playing for the Les Dunn trophy.

After the event celebra-tions transferred to Coun-don Club, and for those

with staying power, to The Miners.

The event was made possible by the generous support of several spon-sors, and through the huge local participation.

“All told, the event raised just short of £7,000 for two great causes,” said David, “which was an unbelievable total to raise in a single day – a huge well done to everyone involved.

“We decided that we would donate £5,000 of the monies raised to Mark’s Team Solan char-ity, with the remainder donated to Mind.

“An annual event is now planned, and we are sure it will continue to be a resounding success.”

Suggested walks can be from 7-16 miles and offer lowland, medium and tougher high peak options.

Coaches pick up from

Darlington, Newton Aycliffe, Middridge, Shil-don, Bishop Auckland and, depending on the end destination, Barnard Castle and Scotch Cor-ner.

The cost per walker remains at £10 per walk day.

There will be a require-ment to wear facemasks while on the coach, but every effort has been made to limit the amount of time spent on the coach for the duration of this year.

It is hoped that the club will be able to range fur-ther afield in 2022 as indeed it did before the lockdowns.

“Any new members are welcome to join the club on any of the outings,” said club chairman, Andy Jakob.
