    I.Introduction

. Extension works have been established since the early times, 1800 BC in the

Mesopotamia. It is an out of school system of education to develop the rural areas. The

work is designed to aid the people of the community of their primary needs. The

programs are set up to train not only to the farmers but these also include homemakersand other rural people. The service is provided to attain better lives for the people and

also the community they live in.

One community that could benefit from an extension program is Barangay Samil

of Lucban,Quezon. Headed by Barangay Captain Marvin Loui Villaseor. The areanof

Samil is composed of 4 sitios of Malapya, Malaking Arado, Tabing Ilog and Tablunes

1234, with an estimated 600 residents. The majestic Mount Banahaw as a backdrop, is

the main source of water for drinking, home use and farming most importantly. The

barangay is located in between Igang and Ayuti, highly accessible to the next province

    of Laguna.

Brgy. Samil is a farming town with wide plantation of rice field. Most farmers plant

rice twice per year during the wet and dry season. They supplement their farming by

planting other crops such as sweet potato, tomato, radish, ginger, eggplant, and other

leafy vegetable like singkang, mustard greens and pechay. Fed by many springs of Mt

Banahaw and the given slope of the land, most of the farming system utilized is

terraced. In addition, farming inputs such as seed and inorganic fertilizers are

subsidized by the local government of Lucban, Quezon. Organic farming is not as

accepted in compare with the more conventional and dependable synthetic fertilizers

    and pesticides.

There are approximately over a hundred of such rice and crop farmers in Samil.

They are not unique in a way that they face the same problems as with the farmers of

the neighboring barangays. Just like in any rural area, financing is the greatest source

of any technology adoption. This is followed with the problems with rodents, weeds,

    mollusk and marketing.

    VI. Results and Discussions

The gathered problems of the farmers were first discussed by the instructor, Prof.

Noemi R. Villaverde. Primary pests such as weeds, rodents, insects and mollusks were

up for the discussion. In addition, organic farming and marketing of the farmers crop

    were discussed.

The first problem tackled was the rodent infestation by Mr. Mark Angelo Buhat. He discussed that maintaining the cleanliness of the field by religious weeding, keeping

the measures of the levees of 6 to 8 inches wide and making dishes out of rats to

eradicate the population. Mr. Deasanta added types of baits such as copra meal with

cement and using of Eveready battery as he joked.

In charge of weed and mollusks eradication topics were Ms. Aubrey Ayaton and

Ms. Genielle Regalado. Composting of Quiapo, the weed in the area, was

recommended to be incorporated in the soil during cultivation following the 21 day

program of harrowing and plowing. The farmers were informed of the high nutrient

content of the weed that can benefit the crops. The solutions for the Golden Snails

include botong seed application, pounded Madre Kakaw leaves and peeled Makabuhay

vines in the entrances of the water in the field. It was also proposed to be utilized in

making golden snail amino acid and feed stuff for the mollusk to be useful. If the

population of the golden snail continues to grow, the application of appropriate

molluscicides as last option is suggested as said by Mr. Deasanta.

Pre-interview in the authority of Sentrong Pamilihan ng Quezon were done by Ms

Susin Villanueva and Ramonchito Castillo. They shared with the farmers the rules and

regulations of the market plus any charges levied on people who wish to sell their

commodities. Two of the farmers present had the opportunity to discuss the upcoming

event in lined with the topic that will be hosted and sponsored by the current mayor of

    the municipality.

Other topic discussed was the use and conversion into organic farming.

Snack was served and pictures were taken.

The next segment of the seminar was the question and answer portion. Two of

the farmers present had the opportunity to remind other farmers of the mentioned

marketing program which will be headed by the Mayor of the town himself. Provision of

a truck was mentioned that will be utilize to transport the crops that will be produced by

all the farmers of the town.

Llight snack was offered to all the farmers. Photos were taken during and

    after the event for documentation.

    VIII Recommendation

A follow up visit must be done for each and every farmer were and were not

present at the seminar. Assessment and reaction data should be taken if the farmers

opted to utilize or practice the materials discussed at the seminar,.

The local and national level of the government should give incentives for those

who practice organic farming as well as greater promotion of organic farming for those

who control the resource input for the farms.1

A seminar for the farmers headed by farming specialist on a regular basis must

be done to collect information regarding the development of the state of the farmers

    crops and land.

More farm visitation for the students of SLSU College of Agriculture together with

their respective instructors (especially plant pathologist) to actually have a hands-on

experience on the situation of the crops and its environment. With the permission to

make outside-the-campus field trips, soil testing analysis should also be a part of the

students laboratory activity. This program can further promote volunteerism for all those

    concerned.

Early information dissemination for any following activity should be made earlier

to farmers to avoid delays of the programs and for farmers to make adjustments on their

    daily scheduled routines.
