Sustainable Design Designed to Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) standards

· Building Orientation – The building orientation of the classrooms are intended to maximize daylighting opportunities and reduce solar heat gain. · Building Envelope – Highly efficient wall construction and glazing systems will be used as an effective way to reduce energy consumption while providing long lasting finishes. · Daylighting – Classroom daylighting will be provided and properly controlled to reduce energy consumption as well as improve the interior environment for the students. · User Control/Operations – Provide the building users with some level of control of their environment (i.e. thermostats, lighting control and window coverings) and help them understand how controlling the systems impacts their environment and energy consumption. · High Efficient HVAC – The greater the efficiency of the HVAC system provides more savings to the District for operations and instruction.

Sustainable Design · Renewable Energy – The building orientation and roof structures are designed to receive photovoltaic panels. · Indoor Environmental Quality – Classroom acoustics and materials will reflect the standards established by CHPS (Collaborative for High Performance Schools). · Site Design – Storm water runoff will fulfill the requirements established by the State and local agencies (100 year storm design); currently we are studying if this can also be a teaching opportunity for the students. · Water Conservation – High efficiency plumbing fixtures will be used throughout along with water use reducing measures for the landscape design, such as weather based irrigation controllers. · Construction – Specified goals for the contractor related to construction waste management and indoor environmental air quality at the conclusion of construction, as well as participation in the City of Solana Beach’s beach sand replenishment program (SCOUP).
