Supporting the Athenaeum of Ohio The Athenaeum of Ohio—Mount St. Mary’s Seminary of the West, is among a few prominent Catholic graduate schools of theology in the Midwest. For almost two centuries, The Athenaeum has raised up men and women of faith. This year, nine men were ordained as priests to serve in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati. This is the largest graduating class in 40 years! The Athenaeum serves many dioceses, and over the years, enrollment has increased. The Athenaeum educated 75 seminarians (from the various dioceses) in 2016-2017. This number grew to 82 in 2017-2018. Despite top to bottom renovations of the current building, there’s no longer adequate space or proper facilities to provide the programs and instruction essential to priestly formation. In short, they’ve reached their capacity. So, expansion of the seminary is underway. The development will include the following:

Creation of two additional conference rooms. Updating and beautifying the Marian Courtyard for hosting benefactors and alumni events. Providing lodging in Fenwick Hall for:

Summer continuation formation programs for newly ordained priests. Retreat opportunities for newly married couples.

Summer continuation formation programs for permanent deacons. Accommodation of 30 additional seminarians during the academic year.

The Athenaeum is accepting pledges over five years. To date, we have received $7,500 in donations. If you would like to support a furnished residence room, please contact Teri Cunningham in the parish office at 489-8815 ext. 738. All donations received from parishioners will be presented to The Athenaeum of Ohio in the name of the parish. Thank you in advance for supporting The Athenaeum!

Caregiver Support Group Caregiving for an elderly loved one can be rewarding but is often challenging or exhausting. Come and learn how to cope with the stresses of caregiving for those who depend on us but may be dealing with the onset of dementia or declining strength. We will meet on Wednesday, July 17 from 12:30-2:00 p.m. in Conference Room D located off the catering hallway. Questions? Contact Jack Peltz at 489-8815 ext. 709 or e-mail [email protected].

Next Parish Outreach Project—Your Input is Welcomed! As you may remember, the Good Shepherd Honduras Project started in November 2010, after a vote of parishioners, with a goal of raising $450,000 in three years in support of a remote, impoverished area in Honduras. Thanks to the generosity of Good Shepherd parishioners, the goal was surpassed and the bilingual school and parish house/faith formation center are now a reality. Prior to the Honduras Project, parishioners raised over $500,000 as part of the Millennium Promise to help empower an African village out of extreme poverty. In November of 2018, the Good Shepherd Assembly of Leaders approved initiatives for the 2019-20 fiscal year. One of the initiatives is to begin a new outreach effort. Discussions have taken place at two recent Pastoral Care and Outreach Commission meetings, and the consensus is to focus this next project closer to home. Parishioners are welcome to give their input to Pastoral Care and Outreach Commission members. Feel free to contact Deacon Mark Westendorf at 489-8815 ext. 714 or [email protected] for details.

Lectors/Announcers Needed for the

4:00 p.m. Sunday Mass We are in need of lectors/announcers for the 4:00 p.m. Sunday Mass. A lector/announcer role is one of great importance in proclaiming the Word of God. We look for people with a good speaking voice who can be easily under-stood. Lector workbooks are given to all lectors. Contact Steve Lindner if you have any questions or would like to join this ministry.

Scripture for Next Week—Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time by Deacon Max Schellman

Servers Needed at the 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Masses

and Gift Bearers Needed at All Masses We are asking YOU to be a part of this Ministry!

Youth (both boys and girls), 5th grade and up, are needed as Servers at the 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Sunday Masses.

Families, couples, and/or friends are needed as Gift Bearers at all of our weekend Masses. If you and a friend usually attend Mass together, please consider asking him/her to be a Gift Bearer with you.

The Servers and Gift Bearers are asked to help during Mass in the following ways:

Carry the Cross and Candle Receive the Gifts Washing of hands

The training for Servers only takes about half an hour and is a very simple ministry. Gift Bearers can be trained in just 20 minutes before Mass. Please contact Steve Lindner to sign up. (Contact information listed above.)

Children in Kindergarten through 8th grade will begin their two weeks of Summer Faith Formation classes this Monday, July 15. They will begin each day with Mass at 8:30 a.m. Since there are over 300 children in the program, church will be very crowded. The moveable walls in the back of church on both sides will be closed due to the space behind them being used as classrooms.

Training Session in August for the New Procedures in Distribution of Communion

Training for the new procedures for distribution of Communion took place in March and April. If you were unable to attend one of the training sessions, we have scheduled another session just for you. The training session will be held on Monday, August 5 at 6:30 p.m. It will be for anyone who has distributed Communion in the past, and for anyone who would like to join this ministry. Please mark your calendars so that you can attend this training session. Questions? Please call Steve Lindner.

First Reading—Genesis 18:1-10a: Abraham is visited by God and two others. Abraham welcomes them and is the perfect host to his guests seeing to their comfort and providing them with the best food and drink. Then they foretell of the birth of a son, Isaac. Sarah, Abraham’s wife, is beyond normal childbearing years. From Isaac the Hebrew nation would grow and emerge. Second Reading—Colossians 1:24-28: This passage was written in Paul’s name several years after his martyrdom. Paul’s rejoicing in his sufferings is featured. He joins his suffering with Jesus’. For Paul, the ultimate message is Christ. Gospel—Luke 10:38-42: Martha welcomes Jesus into her home and her sister Mary is there with her. Martha works very hard to be hospitable and the perfect hostess as Mary sits by and listens to Jesus. Martha complains to Jesus that Mary is not helping her. Jesus defends Mary. He sees both as being good disciples—Mary listening to God’s Word (love of God) and Martha being a servant to others (love of neighbor). He gives Mary the edge as she shows love of God which he has said is the greatest commandment. We can put ourselves today in Martha’s position—being “nervous and anxious about many things”—and ask how do we deal with life’s challenges and strike a balance?

Would You Like to be a Eucharistic Minister at Bethesda North Hospital? Good Shepherd has been serving the needs of Catholic patients at Bethesda North by serving as Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist. The Ministry is blessed to send two volunteers a day that distribute Communion to the patients who wish to receive. Volunteers in this ministry will tell you it is truly a blessing to take Communion to these patients and share a moment with them. We are in need of new members to join this ministry. We are in need of volun-teers that can help during the weekdays and especially the early part of the week. If you can help by sharing a few hours of your time a month taking Communion to these patients, please contact Deacon Dennis Berry.

Meadowbrook Care Center

Our parish supports the needs of the Catholic residents at Meadowbrook Care Center on Weller Road in Montgomery

on Sundays with a Communion Service. After the Communion Service, individual rooms are then visited and Communion is distributed to the residents who cannot make it to the service. We are currently in need of two to three people to help with the Sunday Communion Service. You would help one Sunday a month in a rotation basis. This is also a wonderful service opportunity for couples. Please contact Deacon Dennis Berry.

School Supply Drive The Shepherds Care School Supply Drive will be starting next weekend, July 20/21. Keep an eye out for great deals on dry erase markers, pens, notebooks, folders, and pencils starting to appear at local stores now. We’ve made a few changes to our drive recently, so please note the following: No food will be collected—so no big boxes of crackers or

pretzels, etc. No paper towels/tissues—we’re buying in bulk instead of

collecting, but monetary donations are appreciated. Cash, credit card and gift card donations to the drive will help cover these needs.

Details—The Shepherd’s Care Annual School Supply Drive bene-fitting St. Francis Seraph, Holy Family elementary schools and the scholarship students at Purcell Marian High School (Lavatus Powell Program) will be held the last two weekends in July with items due back by the first weekend in August. Slips indicating teacher requests will be available next weekend, July 20/21, in the main foyer. While all teachers request basic needs for students (pens, pencils, notebooks, folders, etc.), many teachers also have very specific needs for their curriculum, classroom, and special projects such as: holiday stickers, handwriting posters, duct tape, Ziploc bags, poster boards, acrylic paints, etc. We would really appreciate help in meeting some of the special teacher requests. Those willing to help should look for the BLUE request slips. Most of these items can be found at teacher supply stores, office supply or art stores, and on the internet. If you would like to volunteer to work this drive, please see the church website under “Volunteer Opportunities” or call Marion Stickle at 733-0816 to sign up. If you cannot shop for items, but would like to help: cash, checks, credit card donations and gift cards will be accepted. Please make checks payable to Good Shepherd Church with “School Supply Drive” on the memo line. Most helpful gift cards are: Staples, Target, Office Depot/OfficeMax, Wal-Mart. Submitted by: Kathryn Stickle, School Supply Drive Chairperson, Shepherds Care Ministry. Questions? Contact Kathryn at 235-8175 or [email protected].

Tender Mercies Each month, members of Shepherds Care deliver and serve an evening meal to 40-50 residents of Tender Mercies’ housing. Tender Mercies, in Over-the-Rhine, provides housing and individualized supportive services to homeless persons with histories of mental illness. Sign-ups for the meal will be held this weekend, July 13/14, at Activity Center B for a meal to be served the following Sunday, July 21. Questions? Contact Mary Tom Westendorf at 644-9296.

Shepherds Share—Blue Bin Update The “Mother Teresa of Calcutta Dining Room,” 1615 Republic Street in Cincinnati, is part of St. Francis Seraph Ministries and is currently serving 200-225 dinners each day Monday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. In addition, they serve break-fast from 7:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m. Monday through Friday to 125-150 guests and distribute between 100-150 bagged lunches. We have been informed that the majority of the food in their pantry comes from the Good Shepherd blue bins. They will accept all nonperishable food items and currently have a particular need for boxes of individual packages of snacks, juice and drink boxes, large boxes of cereal, and canned vegetables. There is also a great need for volunteers for all shifts. Good Shepherd has now contributed over 1,714 of the blue bins since the start of the “Shepherds Share” program in October of 2009. Nonperishable food items and personal care items can be placed in the blue bins, located by all entrances, anytime. Thanks to parishioner Mike Roman for emptying the blue bins and taking them to St. Francis Seraph Ministries. Your continued support is both appreciated and needed. If you would like to volunteer at the dining room (formerly the “soup kitchen”), visit sfsministries.org/volunteer or call Theresa Diersen at 276-7037

Thank you to the companies listed below for their donations to the GS-SOS raffle. Please support them whenever possible. A special thank you to all of our GS-SOS ministry members who donated items, as well as to our parishioners for their donations and support of the raffle. Our baskets were filled to the brim with ALL DONATED items. This year, we are happy to tell you that we grossed $3,793.75 and that 100% of this money will go to the support of our military with an emphasis on the deployed, as well as the support of Veterans through numerous local and national agencies. On the Monday following the raffle drawing, we were contacted by Joe Bodin, who is a volunteer at Walter Reed Hospital, requesting our help with more Bibles. (We have been sending Bibles to him for the hospital for a couple of years now). We immediately sent 100 Catholic Bibles to him for the chaplain at Walter Reed Hospital to distribute. How’s that for timing? Thank you everyone for your support of the military!

Need to Know

Decree on Child Protection The Archdiocese of Cincinnati’s Decree on Child Protection is our way of protecting all of the vulnerable individuals in our community. If you suspect that someone is being abused, please contact the Coordinator of Ministry to Survivors of Abuse at the Archdiocese at 513-263-6623 as well as local law enforcement. In Hamilton County, you can contact Child Protective Services at 513-241-KIDS (5437). To Report Financial Misconduct If you suspect the misuse or misconduct of Church finances, you may call the EthicsPoint hotline at 1-888-389-0381 or see the Archdiocese website (www.catholiccincinnati.org) under Ministries & Offices, Finance and click the link “To Report Financial Misconduct.” You will be taken to a secure site to file your report.

For confidential information concerning annulments, please call Fr. Jack Wehman (ext. 748) or Emily Weierman (ext. 726) at 513-489-8815.

Welcoming We warmly welcome our new parishioners and guests who are joining us today. If you are interested in learning more about Good Shepherd, or would like to register as an official member of the parish, please stop by the Welcome Desk located in our main foyer. A member of our Welcoming Ministry will be honored to assist you.

Baptism Infant Baptisms are celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Please register for Baptism by calling Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761 or e-mail: [email protected]). Before the Baptism, parents need to attend a session to explore the meaning of Baptism. Sessions are held on the first Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

Adult Initiation Into the Church Adults and children (7 years of age or older) who wish to become Catholics are invited to call Emily Weierman, (513-489-8815 ext. 726 or e-mail [email protected]).

First Eucharist (First Communion) First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated on two occasions in early spring. Parents are invited to call Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761). Children are invited to the Sacrament when they are in the second grade or have reached the age of 7. Children receiving First Eucharist (First Communion) need to be prepared to receive First Reconciliation (Confession). Preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession) begins early fall each year.

Confirmation for Youth Confirmation is celebrated in the spring each year for youth who have not yet received the Sacrament. Confirmation Prepa-ration takes place within the 8th grade Faith Formation curriculum. Classes run September through April for next year’s candidates. Please contact Walter Plummer with any questions (513-489-8815 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Marriage Marriages are celebrated throughout the year with exceptions made for Christmas holidays and the season of Lent. Please contact Steve Lindner for information (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]). Preparation for marriage begins eight months before the Sacrament is celebrated. For preparations, call Steve Lindner (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]).

Pastoral Care of the Sick Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick can be offered when someone is seriously ill, requires surgery, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious. Each week on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., the anointing is offered within Mass (in the chapel). Please notify Deacon Dennis Berry (513-489-8815, ext. 708, or e-mail: [email protected]) in advance of your need. Our parish priests also come to the sick person at home, in the hospital, or at Hospice.

Ministry to the Dying: Anointing and/or Viaticum If a person is near death, he or she may be anointed. However, if the dying person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of an illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest or a deacon may give Viaticum to the dying person. When a priest is unavailable, it is important that the deacon visit the dying to pray with that person and the family and offer Viaticum. Please call the parish office (489-8815). After hours, please leave a message about the location of the dying person and your contact phone number. That message will be relayed to a priest or deacon.

Reconciliation (Confessions) Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the church. Those attending the Sacrament can enter through the doors to the church, prepare in the church and enter the Reconciliation Room when they see the priest is not occupied with another penitent.

Vocations Single men or women interested in answering the call to Priesthood or Religious Life are encouraged to contact the pastor or the Diocesan Vocations Director at 513-421-3131.
