Meaningful Entertaining Made Simple

MeaningfulThe definition of meaningful is to have purpose. We think entertaining should be on purpose. Our products have a purpose—to help you love on people in your home. We give you what you need to gather people around the table, and give you simple ways to make it meaningful.

EntertainingThis word means two things—it means to amuse people, but it also means to think about something—like entertaining an idea. At Mary & Martha we like to use both meanings. For us, entertaining is fun and entertaining is thoughtful. (That’s what it means to love on people—a fun and thoughtful experience for others.)

We chose each word for a reason. These four words hold everything we have learned from Mary & Martha about loving on people in our homes.

So we pass this philosophy on to you and encourage you in your new journey.


Meaningful Entertaining Made Simple

MadeNo, we don’t mean the picture-perfect magazine idea of “made.” We simply mean something with a personal touch. It can be homemade brownies (and yes we count adding an egg to a mixture as homemade), a personal note in a chair or adding a little touch to one of our products as a center-piece. All these add up to something you feel good about and show your guests you care.

SimpleThe definition of simple is “not compli-cated” (how simple is that!) The stigma that entertaining is not simple is the biggest deterrent of using our homes to love on others. We believe entertaining should be simple, so we provide you products and tips to help you make it simple. After all, your guests are the point of entertaining, not perfect homes. When we can believe that…entertaining can be simple.


MELISSA MICHAELS is the creator and writer of one of the most popular decorating blogs on the internet, The Inspired Room (theinspiredroom.net) and on the writing team at (in)courage (incourage.me). Melissa loves to inspire women to love the home they have by sharing simple ideas and inspiration for decorating, homemaking and living a more beautiful and mean-ingful life. She is also a church planter's wife at Voyage in Washington and a mom to three awesome kids (and mom to two of the cutest pups you will ever see!).

We live in a fast-paced, eat-on-the-run and connect-with each-other online world. Even while we are often in touch with people we love through our phones and computers, we sense a disconnect from the heart and soul of our friends and family. We long for something deeper and more mean-ingful than a status update or text message—something we can find in a face to face connection around our table.

When we open our homes to friends and family and sit across from them over a meal at our table, something spiritual and profoundly meaningful happens.

Life slows down.

We engage more of our senses, heightening our sense of enjoyment and connec-tion with those around us.

Our shared experience is embedded more deeply into our memory.

The delicious aroma of the meal, the sound of the dishes being passed around, the warmth of the ambience and cheerful faces of friends gathered around our table create the moments we long for and cherish the most in life.

The Beautiful Basics

One of the first things to put out of your mind when inviting friends and family over for any meal is the idea that everything has to be perfect. Our homes are lived in and grace-soaked. The meaningful part of any get together is time spent asking and listening, shoul-dering cares and laughing out loud…hearing about ball games, remodeling woes and how we’re walking by faith while running through life. We’re in this together and we need to be together to make it!

Straighten up, don’t clean up. I learned a long time ago that no one is looking at your floor when they

come through your door. Your smiling face earns a whole lot of grace—be happy to see your guests and know that a little disarray makes you human…and them less intimidated about having you over for dinner the next time!

You set the tone in your home. If you’re comfortable and relaxed, your guests will feel the same. Try to put all your energy into letting everyone know they’re genuinely welcomed and loved. They’ll go away with a satisfied stomach and a soothed soul.

Welcome to “living in the “&”!

As we slow down together around a table, we listen more intently, hearts and stories are shared rather than broadcasted in an online status, we see real emotion on a face and offer real arms to hug in place of cartoon emoticons and ask more meaningful questions without scrolling down a page for more bite-sized nuggets of carefully crafted information.

I love to set a beautiful table for others to enjoy. I think creating a peaceful and pretty ambience and experience in my home for guests is part of my God-given love language. It’s a gift I really enjoy giving to others. I’m not the best cook and never know what to wear to a party, but I hope my guests can relax and enjoy their time around our table in spite of my clothing indecision and preference for taco and dessert bars over fancy dinners. I want to create a special time for others and bless them in the best way I know how. I love creating the setting for real community to take place.

We don’t have to be an incredible homemaker or plan a complicated menu in order to open our doors and impact those around us. Our style should be a simple and natural reflection of who we really are so we are connecting from a place of authenticity. We can relax and be ourselves! We don’t need to impress with skills or talents we don’t have, we just need to love on those around us by offering our time and attention in whatever way we are most comfortable. It is the personal experience we share in those moments, the meaningful touch we offer, and the connection we form that makes gathering around the table so powerful and meaningful.

For the next couple of hours, don’t worry about dirty dishes, just gather around the table and enjoy your time together.

The scripture and inspirational words on the pieces in the Grace & Gratitude Collection will bring encouragement to your guests, giving their hearts some-thing special to take away.

Our coffee has a story.

Our current selection of coffee grows in a remote, mountain- ous region of Honduras—the Opalaca mountain range. The region produced generations of coffee farmers who were proud of the crops they raised, but they had a big problem. They did not make enough money from their coffee to last from one harvest to the next.

Enter a missionary family from the US. Nearly twenty years ago, they moved to Honduras and connected with these farmers. They worked tirelessly to improve both the farming practices and the business practices of these farmers. As a result of this work, the farmers now make 500% more for their harvests, which they invest in building homes and youth programs plus other invest-ments in their local community

Step 1:

Using whole ginger cloves, push them into an orange to make a pattern or design. The pattern can circle around the orange or striped as shown.

Step 2:

Mix the cloved oranges with other fruit, pears, apples, or lemons in the Copper Luster Pillar.

Step 3:

Lay evergreen branches around the rim. As many or as little as you prefer, until the centerpiece is complete. If available, add fresh holly leaves for variety.

This early childhood intervention program began in 2003 to offer a holistic approach to expectant mothers, caregivers and young, vulnerable children—helping save lives and teaching healthy development.
