August 31 & September 1
Our planning process to create new department initiatives for fiscal year 2020-2021 is underway. The first part of the process is to collect data from parishioners, staff, Assembly of Leaders, and our parish commissions. This weekend, August 31 and September 1, we will have suggestion cards at the three main entrances to the church. Please stop by one of the locations after Mass to share your thoughts and suggestions on ways we can enhance our ministry at Good Shepherd. We are particu-larly interested in your suggestions around our seven parish priorities that were named in the fall of 2017 when our new parish Mission and Vision Statements were created. However, all suggestions are welcomed! The parish priorities are: 1. Reaching out to new, young, and unchurched individuals and families to encourage participation in our faith community, particularly at the Sunday Eucharist. 2. Helping the parishioners to understand their responsibility to give witness to their Catholic faith in all aspects of their lives through an intentional pursuit of a holy way of life. 3. Recognizing changing individual and family circumstances and responding to them with flexible and supportive options. 4. Continuing to expand our pastoral care to meet the needs of the sick and those confined to their homes. 5. Implementing a sustainable stewardship program that includes welcoming new parishioners and fostering the recruitment, training, and appreciation of volunteers. 6. Improving all forms of communication by using the latest technology while preserving and respecting our personal interaction with one another. 7. Hosting enjoyable social events to encourage fellowship and friendship among the members of our parish and extended
community. We hope you will take the time after Mass this weekend to share your thoughts!
What happens after we get all this data? 1. The data from parishioners and staff is compiled and sent to the Assembly of Leaders (AOL) and the members of our
four parish commissions. 2. On Saturday, September 28, the Assembly of Leaders along with our parish commissions will engage in a brainstorm-
ing session on new initiatives for the upcoming fiscal year. As a group, they will vote on their top three suggestions from the session.
3. The staff will look over all of the information and begin making decisions on the initiatives they feel will enhance their ministry/programs. 4. In October, the staff will work with their commissions to create words around their new initiatives. 5. In November, the new initiatives are shared with the Assembly of Leaders. 6. In January, we begin the budget process. Any new initiatives with a financial impact will be included in the fiscal year
2020-2021 budget.

Are you interested in becoming Catholic? Our RCIA group will begin meeting next week on Thursday, September 12 at 7:00 p.m. Get started now by scheduling a meeting with Emily Weierman, Coordinator of Adult Formation at 489-8815 ext. 726, or e-mail [email protected].
Weekly Faith Formation Families who have children in preschool through sixth grade are invited to our Opening Prayer Service on Tuesday, September 3 or Wednesday, September 4 at 6:30 p.m. Following the Prayer Service, we will have an Ice Cream Social and make a craft. Classes begin Tuesday, September 10 at 4:45 p.m. or Wednesday, September 11 at 5:15 p.m. Registration forms can be found on the parish website or in the parish office.
Everyone in the parish is invited to our Harvest Celebration on Friday, September 13. It’s our annual Friday Fall, Faith, Fun and Food Night. We will begin at 6:00 p.m. with a cook-out, have a saint activity, take a hayride, make s’mores and conclude with a Prayer Service. The cost is $10.00 per family. Please call the parish office to register by Tuesday, September 10.
All children who want to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist or Confirmation need to be enrolled in one of our Faith Formation sessions by October 1, 2019. The children need to attend either the summer or the weekly program.
Evening is being Co-sponsored by The Community of the Good Shepherd
& Catholic Charities of Southwestern Ohio
Engage migrants in a meaningful way Su Casa Hispanic Center, a program of Catholic Charities Southwestern Ohio, and Good Shepherd would like to welcome you to an informative session and interact with staff members, who are directly helping migrants and refugees in our community. The people providing services will share stories of those who have received Emergency Services. Each person’s story is unique, and Su Casa caseworkers confront these issues daily. Learn more about Su Casa’s life-saving mission. Join us in offering hope and solidarity to vulnerable children, families, and mothers.
Questions? Contact Deacon Mark Westendorf, Coordinator of Outreach Ministries, at (513) 489-8815

Scripture for Next Week—Twenty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time by Deacon Max Schellman
Help Needed on Friday Mornings If you have some extra time on Friday mornings, we would appreciate some help with light cleaning and dusting around the altar. Please contact Steve Lindner at the number above for more information and/or to volunteer.
Changes to the Distribution of Holy Communion for Those
Who Cannot Come Forward If you are a handicapped or an elderly person who cannot come forward to receive Communion, please let an usher know before Mass begins. Our new procedure allows a designated distributor to come down from the altar first to bring the Body of Christ to you. Please let the usher know if you would like to receive both the Body and Blood of Christ. A distributor will bring you the Body of Christ first and when the Blood of Christ is distributed in your area, someone will give you the Blood of Christ. Another change in the distribution of Holy Communion is noticed on the right side of the church when you enter from the main entrance to the church. We now have two sections of chairs instead of four. (These are the chairs directly in front of the Cry Room.) This is due to the new procedures for distribution of Communion.
Help is Needed at the Sunday, 4:00 p.m. Mass
Communion Distributors, Gift Families, Servers, Head Distributors and Sacristans
We are looking for individuals, men, women, or teens, to serve as a Communion Distributor, Gift Family, Server, Head Distributor and Sacristan at the 4:00 p.m. Sunday Mass. Without your help, it will be difficult to continue with this Mass. You would be trained at a time that best fits your schedule. If you are interested in joining one or more these ministries, please contact Steve Lindner (see contact information above).
Are you interested in singing in our Adult Choir?
The Good Shepherd Adult Choir will be starting the new season on Tuesday, September 10. We are looking for those in our assembly who have an interest in choral singing and would like to share their talents in this exciting ministry. The Adult Choir is open to parishioners of high school age and over. Rehearsals are held on Tuesday evenings in Room 27 from 7:30-9:00 p.m. The group assists at the 9:00 Mass on Sunday mornings and also participates in other seasonal liturgies throughout the year. Questions? Contact Doug Schmutte, Music Director.
First Reading—Wisdom 9:13-18b: This passage from the book of Wisdom illustrates the weakness of humans in knowing God’s wisdom. We are told that God has plans. As disciples we learn to discern God’s plan for us, but not by ourselves. The Holy Spirit helps us to meet this challenge. Second Reading—Philemon 9-10, 12-17: This passage from the short letter by St. Paul makes a tender and tactful plea to Philemon, a friend. He wants Philemon to voluntarily accept Onesimus, his runaway slave, back as a brother of Christ and no longer as a slave. Runaway slaves could be punished under Roman law by death. St. Paul pleads that by Baptism, Onesimus is a brother in Christ. This and other writings of St. Paul helped to undermine the philosophy of slavery. Paul closes by saying, “…welcome him as you would welcome me.” Gospel—Luke 14:25-33: As crowds travel with Jesus, he teaches them about the cost of discipleship. The cost is total and wholehearted and includes making sacrifices, carrying our Cross and serving others above meeting our personal needs. He then recites two parables (the parable of building a tower and the parable of the prudent king). Both parables suggest that we plan ahead and “count the cost” as we do a realistic, candid estimate of what needs to be invested by us to be his disciples.
Good Shepherd’s Handbell Choir begins its season on
Wednesday, September 11 We always welcome additional members including high school students as well as adults. Music reading skills are very helpful, but previous experience in handbell ringing is not necessary. Through some instructional time, the basics of handbell ringing can be mastered. People who have played instruments, or who have sung in choirs, can easily adapt their skills to handbells. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 p.m. in Room 27. Questions? Contact Doug Schmutte, Music Director.

Welcoming Shepherds Needed The Welcoming Shepherd Ministry, which began over 30 years ago, is seeking additional members to help continue the spirit of welcoming within the parish community. This volunteer opportunity is open to individuals or couples. Responsibilities include: Registering new families after Mass. Calling the new families in approximately four weeks as a follow up. Assisting parishioners with information about our ministries and programs.
Volunteers stay after Mass for 10-15 minutes to register new parishioners in the parish. All you need is a smile to help out in this ministry. Training is provided. Call Teri Cunningham in the parish office at 489-8815 ext. 738 or e-mail [email protected]. Please consider joining our team to continue the welcoming spirit of Good Shepherd!
Summer Mission Thank you for your generosity the weekend of August 17/18 for Good Shepherd’s “Summer Mission.” Fr. Benjamin Kusi spoke at all Masses that weekend in support of the Church in Ghana. A total of $11,687 was collected. Fr. Benjamin sends his appreciation! If you would like further information about the Church in Ghana or would like to contact Father Benjamin, send an e-mail to Fr. Benjamin at [email protected]
Stand Firm for Life! The 40 Days for Life Fall Campaign takes place September 25 through November 3. This campaign draws attention to the evil of abortion through prayer, fasting, constant vigil and community outreach, with the goal of turning hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life. All ages are invited and encouraged to join in this concert of prayer for protections for and renewed understanding of the beautiful gift of human life. Also remembered in the vigil are those hurting from past decisions and actions. For directions and/or other infor-mation, please go to https://40daysforlife.com, then browse on locations to find the site nearest you!
Comfort Bags Comfort Bag—small zip-lock bags that include a bottle of water, fruit cup, snack, along with a kind message to hand out to people in need—are available in the parish office. You are welcome to stop by the parish office anytime to pick up a couple Comfort Bags to keep in your car, backpack, or purse when a need arises. Comfort bags will enable people to respond to our sisters and brothers in need in a positive, loving manner. Contact Marie George at 256-0854 or Deacon Mark Westendorf with questions.
Dear Good Shepherd Parishioners, We want to express our appreciation for your generosity in support of the Lavatus Powell Program at Purcell Marian High School. The $40,000 check, which we received today, is truly a blessing for families whose needs outweigh their resources. Tuition is expensive and this donation will help families with final tuition dollars, relieving them of some of the financial burden. Your long term commitment has enabled us to keep the Lavatus Powell Program alive. We consider you part of our family because of your ongoing support. The Community of the Good Shepherd is an inspiration to all of us. Your faithful-ness and support touches each of us deeply. Our students benefit greatly from the volunteer support, nutritional food, school supplies, and tuition each year. You are making a differ-ence in the lives of many students. Your generous gifts help students on their journey toward receiving a high school diploma, which leads students toward a successful future. Thank you once again for your kindness, generosity, time and effort in supporting our program. Sincerely, Sister Janet and Julie Wilke
Blood Pressure Screening will take place next weekend, September 7/8, in the parish office after all Masses
except the 4:00 p.m. Sunday Mass.

Baptism Infant Baptisms are celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. Please register for Baptism by calling Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761 or e-mail: [email protected]). Before the Baptism, parents need to attend a session to explore the meaning of Baptism. Sessions are held on the first Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.
Adult Initiation Into the Church Adults and children (7 years of age or older) who wish to become Catholics are invited to call Emily Weierman, (513-489-8815 ext. 726 or e-mail [email protected]).
First Eucharist (First Communion) First Eucharist (First Communion) is celebrated on two occasions in early spring. Parents are invited to call Nancy Dallas (513-489-8815 ext. 761). Children are invited to the Sacrament when they are in the second grade or have reached the age of 7. Children receiving First Eucharist (First Communion) need to be prepared to receive First Reconciliation (Confession). Preparation for First Reconciliation (Confession) begins early fall each year.
Confirmation for Youth Confirmation is celebrated in the spring each year for youth who have not yet received the Sacrament. Confirmation Prepa-ration takes place within the 8th grade Faith Formation curriculum. Classes run September through April for next year’s candidates. Please contact Walter Plummer with any questions (513-489-8815 or e-mail: [email protected]).
Marriage Marriages are celebrated throughout the year with exceptions made for Christmas holidays and the season of Lent. Please contact Steve Lindner for information (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]). Preparation for marriage begins eight months before the Sacrament is celebrated. For preparations, call Steve Lindner (513-489-8815 ext. 702 or e-mail: [email protected]).
Pastoral Care of the Sick Anointing of the Sick The Anointing of the Sick can be offered when someone is seriously ill, requires surgery, or if the same illness or condition becomes more serious. Each week on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m., the anointing is offered within Mass (in the chapel). Please notify Deacon Dennis Berry (513-489-8815, ext. 708, or e-mail: [email protected]) in advance of your need. Our parish priests also come to the sick person at home, in the hospital, or at Hospice.
Ministry to the Dying: Anointing and/or Viaticum If a person is near death, he or she may be anointed. However, if the dying person is able to swallow, it is recommended that they receive the Eucharist as Viaticum. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick ought to be celebrated at the beginning of an illness. Viaticum is to be celebrated when death is close. The Eucharist, given as Viaticum, is food for the passage through death to eternal life. A priest or a deacon may give Viaticum to the dying person. When a priest is unavailable, it is important that the deacon visit the dying to pray with that person and the family and offer Viaticum. Please call the parish office (489-8815). After hours, please leave a message about the location of the dying person and your contact phone number. That message will be relayed to a priest or deacon.
Reconciliation (Confessions) Tuesdays from 5:30-6:15 p.m. in the Reconciliation Room in the church. Those attending the Sacrament can enter through the doors to the church, prepare in the church and enter the Reconciliation Room when they see the priest is not occupied with another penitent.
Vocations Single men or women interested in answering the call to Priesthood or Religious Life are encouraged to contact the pastor or the Diocesan Vocations Director at 513-421-3131.

Need to Know
A Story About Four Friends:
“Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, Nobody.”
There was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when actually Nobody asked Anybody. Let’s take the responsibility to do good today so that tomorrow can be better.
