Wanganui District Councils’ Forestry Joint Committee – 2.00pm, Wednesday, September 16 (Committee Room 2) Agendas are available at the Customer Services Counter, Municipal Office Building, 101 Guyton Street, Wanganui and the Wanganui District Library two working days prior to the meeting. Changes to building fees Following the adoption of the Council’s 10-Year Plan, a number of fees have been increased for our services. For customers involved in building projects and information requests, there are several areas where prices have increased. The main changes are: • Woodburner applications: free standing: $290.00, inbuilt: $350.00 • Land Information Memorandum (LIM): $177.00 • Council Infrastructure connection costs (varies) • Accreditation levy for commercial projects (now capped at $500.00) The Building Control Team has removed ‘estimated actual costs’ from our list of consent fees. Due to the differing nature and complexity of projects, these figures were proving to be inaccurate and causing confusion. We work on a user pays system, where actual timeframes are registered and charged accordingly. This allows for more realistic pricing. The revised fees structure will take effect from 14 September 2015. Copies will be available from the Customer Services Team at the Council building in Guyton Street and under the ‘Building Services’ page of www.wanganui.govt.nz. Koha appreciated. To make sure everyone understands what’s in the new Dog Control Bylaw, and to have a bit of fun along the way, we have enlisted the help of our district’s most famous dog, Bandit, star of television’s Purina Pound Pups to Dog Stars. The Dog Control Bylaw 2015 was adopted by the Council in June to reflect the feedback we received from the community about how dogs should be managed in our district. The changes we’ve made to the bylaw aim to improve community safety by reducing the number of unwanted dogs, roaming dogs and dogs likely to attack people. Bandit, who was once a wild dog living in Cooks Gardens, was picked up by our Animal Control Team after winning the hearts of members of the public and Council staff alike. In March this year, he was introduced to animal behaviour expert Mark Vette who rehabilitated Bandit so he could be successfully rehomed and trained to star in an advert for Purina. He is now working with the Council to educate dog owners about their responsibilities and joining the Animal Control Team when they talk to school students about safety around dogs. Animal Control Team Leader Jo Meiklejohn says Bandit is a great role model because he proves that with the right support and education dogs can be taught new behaviours and learn to get on well with people and other animals. “He is a great success story. After being wild and fearful of people, Bandit is now happy in his new home and responds well to commands. I am sure people will enjoy seeing him around, especially because he is a bit famous now.” Every month in Community Link we will share ‘Bandit’s top tips’, which will provide information what to do when you see wandering or aggressive dogs, as well as how to be a good dog owner. Our animal control team will be giving out Bandit bookmarks and brochures and we’ve organised a colouring in competition with lots of great prizes, so watch this space. If you are a dog owner, here’s a few important things you need to remember. • Dogs must be on a leash at all times in public places, except in designated off-leash areas • A new, designated off-leash area has been created on the riverbank walkway, from the corner of Taupo Quay and Wilson Street to the northern end of Bedford Avenue • Only three dogs can be registered per household, unless you have an exemption licence from the Council. (This only applies to urban areas and does not apply to households where more than three dogs were registered before June 2015) • The fee for releasing a dog from the pound has been increased to $70.00 For more information, please visit www.wanganui.govt.nz/animalcontrol.
