Queens ParkOne of Whanganui’s most historic sites and the cultural heart of the city featuring heritage libraries, the Whanganui Regional Museum and the War Memorial Conference Centre. Views to the river, an acclaimed Peace sculpture and the Carillion. Many wedding photos have been taken on the Veterans’ Steps with the Sarjeant Gallery and Mount Ruapehu in the background. Majestic, moving and memorable.Wanganui District Council T: +6 349 0001 E: [email protected] W: www.wanganui.govt.nz

Virginia LakeA premier park in Whanganui with colourful displays whatever the season and weather. Lit at night, multi-coloured beams highlight the trees and fountain. The park opens at dawn and closes at dusk. Beautiful views, a boardwalk, Peter Pan and Tainui statues, you’ll find a spot perfect for you. There are winter and art gardens, twin bridges, a wisteria pergola and a band rotunda popular for weddings.Wanganui District Council T: 06 349 0001 E: [email protected] W: www.wanganui.govt.nz

Kowhai ParkFor a more playful theme, consider NZ’s best playgrounds at Kowhai Park. Slides, swings, boats, nursery characters, the Old Woman’s Shoe, a house-sized pumpkin, a dinosaur slide and an octopus. Be a princess bride with your prince at the miniature Castle, feast at the toadstool tables, be as creative and unique as you like. Your imagination is the limit!Wanganui District Council T: 06 349 0001 E: [email protected] W: www.wanganui.govt.nz

Glen Logie Rose GardensGifted to the city by the Alexander family, these stunning gardens on Anzac Parade display over 600 roses. It was the original rose garden of the Alexander sister’s family home in Wanganui East and was built in 1911.Wanganui District Council T: 06 349 0001 E: [email protected]: www.wanganui.govt.nz

Bason Botanic GardensRecognised by the NZ Gardens Trust as a Garden of Significance, 25 hectares of landscaped countryside, the Bason Botanic Gardens were gifted to Whanganui in 1966 by Stanley Bason, at birth an adopted illegitimate and unwanted child. Stanley married his sweetheart, Blanche Prideaux in 1916 and together they created these beautiful gardens of rare and exotic plants. The Memorial Tower is made of fossilised shell rock bricks, is 33.5m high and has 176 steps. Built in 1919 the Durie Hill Elevator is NZ’s only underground elevator and one of two in the world. The city scenes from either viewing platform are simply spectacular.Wanganui District Council T: 06 349 0001 E: [email protected]: www.wanganui.govt.nz

Heritage BuildingsWhanganui’ s heritage buildings define our sense of place, character and community and we still retain a rare concentration of late nineteenth and early twentieth century buildings.
