Not everyone is lucky enough to get a wake-up call in life. Some people get theirs just in time. Others get it but don'thear it. Still others hear it loud and clear but refuse to takeany notice.

Pharaoh got his in this week's Parshah (Torah reading) whenJoseph interpreted his dreams and advised him to appoint "awise and discerning man" who would oversee a macro economic plan for the country. Joseph explained to the Kingof Egypt that because he experienced two dreams and wokeup in between it was a sign from heaven to wake up and actimmediately as the matter was of the utmost urgency.Pharaoh took the message to heart and the rest is history.

On the health and well-being level, a little cholesterol, climbing blood pressure or recurring bronchitis might be thenot-so-subtle signs that it's time for a change of lifestyle. These are the medical wake up calls we receive in life. Do wereally have to wait for a heart attack, G-d forbid, to stop

smoking, or start eating less and exercising more? That's whatwake-up calls are for, to help us get the message before it'stoo late.

Then there are the spiritual signs. I will never forget a friendwho shared with me the story of his own red lights flashingand how a changed spiritual lifestyle literally saved his life. Hewas a workaholic driving himself to the brink. Had he carriedon indefinitely he simply would not have survived. Then hedecided to give Shabbat a try. What he had never previouslyappreciated about Shabbat was that it is a spiritually invigorating day of rest and spiritual serenity. And in discovering Shabbat, he rediscovered his humanity. (He alsodiscovered he could play golf on Sundays instead of Saturdays.)

A short trigger film I once used at a Shabbaton weekendprogram depicted a series of professionals and artisans atwork. As they became engrossed and immersed in their

s”xcrespective roles they each became so identified with their workthat they lost their own identities. Monday through Friday, thecarpenter's face dissolved into a hammer, the doctor took onthe face of a stethoscope and the accountant's head started looking exactly like a calculator. Then on Shabbat they closedtheir offices and came home to celebrate the day of rest withtheir families; slowly but surely, their faces were remolded fromtheir professions to their personalities. Total immersion in theirwork had dehumanized them. They had become machines. Now,thanks to Shabbat, they were human again. That short video lefta lasting impression.

It's not easy to change ingrained habits. But Chanukah, whichusually falls during this week's Parshah, carries with it a relevantmessage in this regard. Take one day at a time. One doesn't haveto do it all at once. One light at a time is all it takes. On the firstnight we kindle a single Chanukah light, on the second night wekindle two lights, and on the third night three. We add a littlelight each day, and before long the menorah is complete and alleight Chanukah lights are burning bright.

It's ok to take one day at a time. It's not ok to go back to sleepafter you get a wake up call. Whether it's your medical well beingor your spiritual health, the occasional wake up call is a valuablesign from Above that it may be time to adjust our attitudes, lifestyles or priorities. Please G-d, each of us in our own liveswill hear the call and act on the alarm bells with alacrity.

The plot thickens. At the end of last week's portion, Yosephaccused the brothers of stealing his magic goblet. Yehuda, incharge of the troupe, denies even the remotest possibility thatany one of the brothers could be a thief. So confident wasYehuda that he pre-ordained the would-be thief to a deathpenalty and offered the remaining group of nine brothers asslaves were if the egregious accusations proved correct. Unfortunately, Yehuda was unaware of Yoseph's precontrivedruse of planting the goblet in Benjamin's sack. This week's portion begins as Yoseph wants to keep Binyamin, and onlyBinyamin, as a slave, something that Yehuda will battle to thevery end to prevent. Yoseph and his brothers confront eachother. In a mixed array of rage, fury, and emotional pleas,Yehuda bargains with Yoseph. Almost threatening war over thematter, Yehuda explains that "Benjamin cannot be taken as aslave as he has left an old father who awaits his return. If hewill not return to his father, the old man will die of grief andaggravation. After all, he already lost one son to a terrible ac-cident."

After seeing the concern that Yehuda has for his youngerbrother, Yoseph makes the startling revelation. "I am JosephIs my father still alive?" (Genesis 45:3) Yoseph then forgivesthe brothers and tells them that his episode was divinely preordained. It set the path as a lifeline from the ensuingfamine. He then sends his brothers back to Canaan to bring

his father, but before doing so he presents eachof them with a set of clothes. However, Yosephgives his youngest brother Benjamin five sets ofclothing and three hundred pieces of silver(Genesis 45:22). The Talmud (Megillah 16b) asksa very poignant question. How is it that Yoseph,a victim of jealousy, provoked his brothers by favoring Benyamin? Didn't jealousy spur the hatred that led to the original calamity? Why didn't he learn from past experience, not to showfavoritism? The Talmud explains that Yosephwas very calculated in his actions. He was alluding to a similar event that would occur inthe future. After being saved from the gallows,Mordechai, a descendent of Benyamin, miraculously rose to power and prestige. He wasgifted with five changes of clothing as he left thepalace of Achashveirosh. Benjamin's fivechanges of clothing were symbolic of a futuresartorial gift that Benyamin's descendent wouldone day receive. Some commentaries ask a powerful question. Obviously, Yoseph did notexplain the deep meaning of his actions to hisbrothers. What then was gained by favoring Benjamin in front of them? Would the symbolicreference negate any ill feeling? Would somemysterious token resolve a problem that may

have been simmering? Why does Yoseph, in the midst of the turmoil ofhis startling revelation, decide to make a ceremonial gift thatfavors one brother over the rest, in order to foreshadow anevent destined to occur in more than 1,000 years in the future?Could he have not saved symbolism for a more complacentsetting?

Rabbi Paysach Krohn tells this beautiful tale in his latest work,Along the Magid's Journey:

In 1939, the Nazi Gestapo shut down Rabbi Moshe Schnei-der's yeshiva in Frankfurt, Germany. With tremendous effortand support from the English community, he was able to relocate the school to England. Survival during that horrificperiod was both a tremendous spiritual and physical challengebut two boys in the Yeshiva helped meet that challenge. Theyboth were named Moshe. One Moshe would rise in the earlyhours of the morning and pick up leftover bread from a generous bakery. Carrying the bags of bread and leftover rollswhile walking through the bitter cold was not easy, but Moshenever missed his duties. In fact, he often took the place ofother boys who were supposed to do the chore.

The other Moshe also woke up early. He led a special learningsession before dawn. He encouraged his friends to make theextra effort - which they religiously did.

Destiny TodayBy Rabbi Mordechai KamenetzkyBy Rabbi Mordechai Kamenetzky

Page 21: Community Links 221

December 14, 2012 • 323-965-1544 • [email protected] 21

After years of uninterrupted efforts, one day the boys got pub-lic recognition. Rabbi Schneider blessed them in front of the en-tire school. "Moshe who shleps the bread is not only schleppingtoday's bread. One day, he will help distribute bread for thousands of people. And the Moshe who is concerned withspirituality of others will continue to do so in years to come,"announced the Rosh Yeshiva. "Their actions today are only seedsof the future."

His words proved true. Moshe, the bread-shlepper, becameMoshe (Paul) Reichman, one of our generation's most benevolent philanthropists. Moshe, the young teacher, becameRabbi Moshe Shternbuch, Rav in Johannesburg, South Africaand Har Nof, Israel, an author of prestigious books on JewishLaw, and a teacher of thousands.

Perhaps Yoseph is telling us the secret of our people. Momentsearlier Benyamin stood in shackles. He was accused of stealinga magic goblet and was humiliatingly sentenced with life-longenslavement to Pharaoh. Moments later he was not only liberated, but identified with honor and integrity as the bloodbrother, from both mother and father, of the most powerfulman in the world. Yoseph gives the former slave-to-be a speciala five-fold gift as an announcement to the world. With

Benyamin, he declares the destiny of his people. Yoseph declaresthrough Binyamin that today's events are our manifest destiny.Due to the courageous actions of Yehuda, Binyamin, the slave-to-be, walked away triumphantly, not with one change ofclothing but with five. This was not a symbolism for thousandsof years to come, but rather a symbolism of the ever-presentcharacter of the Jewish people.

The events of Benyamin in Egypt manifested themselves inalmost direct comparison and beautiful symmetry with events

that occurred centuries later in Persia. Mordechai the Yehudi, adescendant of Benjamin and by many accounts Yehuda, stoodhis ground under the greatest threats of death and humiliation. He defied the prophets of doom and walked away with gloryand splendor.

Yoseph's message was no riddle, it was no illusion, and it wasno mystical prophecy. It was our destiny. Courage in the tryingtimes yields greatness. It was not a message only for the future. It was a message of the future - for today. That was a messageall the brothers could appreciate -- at that moment. It is a message we too, can appreciate --right now.

There is a myth going around, and it’s been here for a while. I candefinitely remember it from when I was a kid. The myth is thathealthy food tastes like cardboard. And I think many of us can attestto that. Who remembers eating those fat-free, sugar-free, low-sodium poser “cookies” that taste like cardboard because theyare, in fact, basically cardboard? I do. But there is a catch. Here is the question: Are those fat-free, sugar-

free, low sodium poser “cookies” actually healthy? The answer is aresounding no. Those beautifully packaged little cardboard morselsthat will last for ten years on a supermarket shelf are not healthy. After ten years, if the bugs and the bacteria are still not interestedin those things, it’s a pretty clear sign that there was nothing of valueto begin with. So- not cookies, not healthy, not yummy. What a bar-gain.In our current world, with such vast food choices, how does one

identify which foods are actually healthy? It’s easy for anyone’s headto spin, even the intelligent and consciously discerning. When Iwork with my clientele, I ask them to let go of the “____-free”stigma and switch to something more simple, and much, much moreaccurate: If it is something your great-grandmother would recognizeand feed her family, that is a great place to start.Let’s start with a simple recipe for Garlic Green Beans.Steam or blanch green beans to your own desired crunchy/

mushyness. In a separate pan, gently sauté garlic in Extra VirginOlive Oil for about ten seconds. Turn off the fire and add in thedrained green beans. Toss it all up, add salt, and serve. Could it beeasier? Come on! Want to feel good about it?

Green beans are high in calcium, potassium, and B-complex vitamins. Studies show that, along with other green veggies, they re-duce the risk of lung cancer.Garlic is a rich source of dietary sulphur and selenium, and is great

for treating blood pressure disorders, infections, headaches, and par-asites. Garlic also contains an oil called allyl disulphate that acts asan anti-bacterial agent in the gut. It lowers cholesterol, prevents can-cer, protects again blood clotting, aids in treating bronchitis and em-physema, and strengthens the immune system. BOOM! Drop theBomb!Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a wonderfully stable monounsaturated fat

that is 75% oleic acid, which helps to regulate blood sugar. It is richin antioxidants and Vitamin E, and above all, it has proven the testof time.So what do we have here? A delicious, easy to make dish that is in-

credibly healthy, tastes nothing like cardboard, and is somethingyour great grandmother would be proud of!Myth #1 has been debunked.

Ingredients

Apple stuffed Latke with Sour

Cream Cinnamon Topping

5 Idaho potatoes

1 Spanish onion

2 eggs beaten

1 Tbsp. salt

1 Tsp. black pepper

3 Tbsp. of flour (optional)*

2 granny smith apples

1 Tbsp. butter or coconut oil

1. Grate the potatoes and onions using a food processor or

hand grater. 2. Add eggs, salt and pepper to mixture. Then add

flour (optional). 3. Shred granny smith apples. Sauté apples with

butter until softened. 4. In a large frying pan, heat ½ inch oil

on med/high heat. It is important to make sure that the oil is

hot enough to crisp up the potatoes but not too hot that the

potatoes will burn. 5.Place a heaping spoonful of latke mix into

the pan. The latkes should sizzle and crisp up quickly. 6. Place

a spoonful of the sauteed apples on top of the latke. Top with

another spoonful of latke mix on top of filling and make sure

that the potato mix on top of the filling completely covers the

filling. 7.Flip over and fry for about a minute. Drain on paper

towels. Serve hot.

Sour Cream Cinnamon Topping

½ cup sour cream

1 teaspoon cinnamon

2 tablespoons sugar

Mix sour cream with cinnamon and sugar.

Cool until ready to serve.
