Letter from the Team RectorRabbi Jonathan Romain, the Rabbi for Maidenhead Reform Synagogue, commented recently that religions are often seen as forces of conservatism but in fact are often the ones who help reinterpret traditions for modern times and help society change with the times rather than be the ones who prevent progress. I suspect he may be being more generous to religious people than we really deserve - sometimes it feels as though we in the church come to change, screaming and kicking long after the rest of society has moved on.

Sometimes religions keep traditions and help them make sense for today. The practice of Harvest festivals seems to be one of these. Few of us are remotely connected to the land, but nonetheless churches and schools all maintain the harvest festival. It is now seen as a way of giving thanks for all that we have been given in our food and home comforts. We also use Harvest festivals as a time to share with others who have less than us. Gone are the days when people would bring a giant marrow to church, but the tinned food and toiletries which are brought are just as gratefully received.

Whether or not you attend a Harvest festival in church or school this year, I hope you will use the time to be thankful for all that you have and to consider sharing with others. Most of the supermarkets have a food drop for our local Foodbank, the One Can Trust and this is a simple way of sharing with others. Let’s use this Harvest season to do this!

With best wishes, Jeremy

COULD YOU USE YOUR GIFTS AS BLESSINGS FOR OTHERS?

‘All good gifts around us are sent from heaven above, then thank the Lord, let’s thank the Lord, for all his love,’ states the harvest hymn. Late September/early October is traditionally associated with gathering in of the main harvest and is celebrated in the churches; this year at St Michael’s we celebrate both our Patronal festival and harvest on 30th September and at the same time say goodbye to Camilla, our vicar of the past 10 years. At the service, as well as giving thanks for the harvest and praying for farmers and all who work to bring us our food, we will celebrate all the various gifts that God has given each of us. We will especially give thanks for the wonderful gifts and blessings that Camilla has brought us over these years. She started her time with us by bringing to fruition, alongside Jean Dean, our long-awaited hope for new rooms additional to the hall, now known as the Community and Church Resource Centre (CCRC). They have brought us the blessing of being much used by both church and community groups. Camilla also helped us to make connections through the schools with young families who have again brought us much blessing. It is now up to us how we use all the talents and giftings we each have, as well as the blessings that have been brought to us, for the good of others.

Jesus told a parable about a rich landowner who built more and more barns to store all his produce so that he could then “eat, drink and be merry” – see Luke 12:16-21; but Jesus warned against such behaviour. Instead, he said we are to use what we are given for good and to share out to others. There are many

groups in Beaconsfield who value volunteers and need more – perhaps you have some time on your hands and could help out? Maybe you could offer to drive people to lunch and tea clubs or to doctor appointments? I know that the various churches, Beaconsfield Advisory Centre and Beaconsfield Community Association would love to hear from you (their details are in this magazine). Youth clubs and the uniformed associations are always looking for leaders and helpers and perhaps this is where your talents lie. In his letter to the Corinthians Paul writes that we have all been given various gifts which are to be used for the common good and to build up one another; I believe that harvest time is an opportunity for us to look again at the things we are good at and consider how we might use them as blessings for others.

PAUSE TO PRAY

A harvest prayer

Creator God,

we thank you for your loving concern for us your children

and for your daily provision for our needs.

Thank you especially for farmers

and all those who work to put food on our tables.

You have given each and every one of us gifts and abilities,

roles and opportunities;

help us to use these not for our own selfish ends

but humbly and gladly for the service of others.

We pray in the Name of him who gave his life for us,

Jesus Christ, your Son our Saviour.

Amen

CELEBRATING PADDINGTON BEARPaddington Bear made his first appearance 60 years ago, on 13th October 1958, when the book A Bear Called Paddington, by Michael Bond, was published. Paddington is of course a fictional, anthropomorphised bear who has featured in more than 20 books that have been translated into 30 languages and have sold more than 30

million copies. He has also starred in two major films and has been described as a worthy successor to Winnie the Pooh. A Paddington Bear soft toy was the first item passed through the Channel Tunnel by British tunnellers to their French counterparts when the link was made in 1994.

HEATHER DUFFY MEETS ANITA CRANMER MAYOR OF BEACONSFIELD

Anita Cranmer was elected Mayor of Beaconsfield in May and has completed six busy months in that office already. She has lived in our area for seventeen years - some time in Hedgerley and the rest in the town of Beaconsfield. Anita is an experienced councillor having spent eight years on South Bucks District Council on the Cabinet then on Beaconsfield Town Council from 2014; she went on to become our County Councillor for Buckinghamshire in 2017 after the sad death of her colleague and friend Alan Walters.

Please tell me a little about yourselfI was born in Kent and read history at London University and then took a Post Graduate certificate in Education. My husband George and I met at University and lived in London and USA. We had six children three of whom were born in Illinois where we lived for 11 years. We also spent 9 years in Boston. Our family`s education is international because after our return to England the younger ones went to school and university here. I went back to teaching locally on our return and taught history at Wycombe High School. Family life is all-important to me since of our son died when he was five years old and from the pain of that I learned the value of faith and the strength it gives. I did a postgraduate diploma in religious studies and went on to teach that.

How did you become involved in local politics?I have always hoped to make a difference to our community and looked to local government as a place to do that. I had done

a lot of charity work, school governorships and local fundraising and then was elected to South Bucks District Council. I was responsible for the re-build of the municipal South Buckinghamshire golf course and many community projects. Since joining Beaconsfield Town Council I have been the Chairman for community issues. We have placed defibrillators in public areas, begun work on possible parking solutions for the town, set up a town Council newsletter and begun work to have a hopper bus in the town. On the County Council, I am Deputy Cabinet

member for Education, Skills and chair of our Local Area Forum. Life is quite busy.

How do you feel about being the mayor? It is a huge privilege to be Mayor of Beaconsfield and a great honour. I am able to meet people from all walks of life and to represent the town at events, which I would not normally attend. It gives me an opportunity to talk to people and to better understand the hopes and dreams of many. I see the very young and the very old and all organisations in between. It is wonderful to be part of an historic tradition.

As mayor, what are the Beaconsfield issues that you are particularly interested in?I care very much about the welfare of the town and of the people in it. Life should be good in a lovely town like Beaconsfield but for many it is not so. I am supportive of all the wonderful welfare groups

and associations that help where help is needed, I care about preserving the integrity of our historical past and all that is good for the future.

What would you like to have achieved by the end of your year as mayor? Two things, I would like to see a better information system in place particularly for those who feel a bit isolated or lonely so that people know what things are available for them to do. I would like to have a trial of a hopper bus to take people to groups if they feel they cannot get there. This is a work in progress.I would also love to solve the parking issues in the town… and this is a slow, expensive and difficult work in very slow progress. Finally, a third point. I have two charities, as Mayor, Cancer research Beaconsfield and Alzheimer’s and I want not only to raise money for them but also to help and support all their outstanding work.

BEACONSFIELD COUNTRY FAYREThis year’s Fayre was again a great community event as reflected in the photographs. It was attended by a large number of people which included many from outside of the Beaconsfield area. The amount raised was approximately £12,000 which will be distributed to local charities. What was so apparent this year was the great feeling of friendship, love

and community. The committee’s thanks go to all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the event such a success, including Dr Jade Jack, from Straid Vetinnary Clinic, who had such a major task judging the huge number of dogs. Our thanks also go to all those that came to support us.Sylvia Jones

THOUGHTS ON VISITING SENEGAL Ruth Douglas is the daughter of Nigel Douglas, pastor of Beaconsfield URC. She spent three years (2015-2018) in Senegal working as a teacher for WEC (World-wide Evangelisation Crusade) and in May her parents visited her.

It was my first trip to Africa and was a chance to be with Ruth and experience the school she has lived and worked in for three years.

For some reason (perhaps because I have not really travelled very widely), I am always surprised when I visit a place for the first time and find it is not only different from what I am used to, but also identifiably itself.

I had this reaction to Senegal. Africa is so astonishingly African. Trees (Baobabs!), flowers, sky, earth - the very air - everything is emphatically not England. It is itself. The mind seizes on details to describe, but the differentness is present in everything. We visited in the dry season, so the earth was dry, dusty, sandy and ochre. (My sandals are still caked with the dust). There were dry stream-beds, complete with bridges, to show that rainy season is another matter. Tiny lizards scuttle, almost too quick to see, or bask immobile on the sides of stucco buildings. Every window is (sensibly) covered by screens, so they can be left open without admitting insects. Floors are beautiful polished tile, which is cool on the feet and easy to sweep. Roads are either brand-new tarmac or dirt tracks almost indistinguishable from the surrounding ground - Senegal is a developing country. Buildings, too, seemed to be generally under construction. On the roads the traffic is composed of every kind of vehicle

from bicycles to donkey or horse-drawn carts to ageing rattle trap or flashy new cars. People greet one another (and total strangers like ourselves) loudly and cheerfully, either in basic French or in whatever percussive language was spoken locally.

We went to the seaside three times and enjoyed the fine sand and warm sea (well, warm compared to the coast of Cornwall). I was astonished by thousands of hand-sized crabs scuttling just out of reach. Part of the shore was lined with (half-built but operational) hotels and beach-side restaurants, a bit like I imagine the Mediterranean to be (not that I’ve ever been there, either), but then ladies with baskets on their heads would walk across the beach to sell cloth and clothes. Not the Med, then. Prices on the beach, for both cloth and food, were considerably

Page 25: Community Magazinebeaconsfieldcommunitymag.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/... · Paddington is of course a fictional, anthropomorphised bear who has featured in more than 20 books that

Beaconsfield Community Magazine - October 2018

23

higher than less touristy places, but still considerably lower than here. I can see why someone wanting a warm seaside holiday might choose Senegal.

A week spent with Nigel staring in wonder at all that was different and eating mangoes and peanuts and cashews and ma’afe (beef casserole with peanut butter) and drinking bisap (steeped dried hibiscus flowers) would in itself have made a great holiday. But even better was spending time with Ruth and getting to know Burofaye Christian School (BCS).

It is a small boarding school whose purpose is to educate the children of missionaries serving in Senegal. The teachers and support staff (aside from cleaners and some kitchen help) are volunteers from all over the world and of course the children themselves originate from all over. As MKs (missionary kids) many have lived in several different cultures even before coming to BCS. The result is a vibrant mix of cultures and languages within the school made liveable by the shared love of Jesus. Clashes and misunderstandings occur frequently, but are met with good humour and understanding, rather than hostility and suspicion. We were met with warmth and curiosity (living with differences seems to make everyone more, rather than less curious) and good humour. We got the chance to help out in a few classes and see the excellent and caring teaching that went on. We ate two meals a day with the whole school and enjoyed the cross-cultural banter (and marvelled at the complaints of the hoodie-clad African kids that the 25-30º temperature was cold). We had the opportunity to socialise with many of

the staff - German card games are fun but taxing! - and be told, over and over, what an asset to the school Ruth was, which is always good for parents to hear.

We joined the weekly foray into the village to play games and share bible stories with the local children. And, perhaps best of all, we were there to worship with the community, to witness three baptisms and take part in an over-night prayer vigil, which were all deeply moving events.

So, Africa is African and England is English and people have widely different cultural norms and expectations, but the people of God know and welcome and love each other all the same and Jesus is there, at work already, wherever we go. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

MY GRANDFATHER’S WARWe were brought up with stories of The War. Well to be fair of the last two wars. I was born at the tail end of the Second World War so it was still very fresh in everyone’s mind. Both my grandfathers were involved in the 1914/1918 war. One came home, the other did not. Father’s father was killed in northern France in a village called Bethune, before father was born. My grandmother made sure that he was kept very much alive by bringing him into the conversation, often explaining things such as there was one petal amongst those that fell on Armistice Day that was for grandfather Reg alone. Later, when we had television I was fascinated to watch the Remembrance Service and try to work out which petal was his.

Grandfather Harry came home. He had been in Palestine, he only spoke about the war on very rare occasions, never about the fighting, that was a ‘no go’ area. But let’s start from the beginning.Thunder storms in the middle of the night were so exciting, everyone got up and father went down stairs to make tea. It was like having a gigantic midnight feast and if grandma and grandpa were staying it became a party. It was then, if we were lucky, we would get grandpa to talk about the desert and how after a storm there were the most beautiful flowers that would bloom out of nowhere. He would talk about his grumpy old camel, he hated camels, who would bite if it had a chance and how there were bananas growing and how the Arabs would not eat them unless they were black. We always saved the black bananas for grandpa, he liked them that way. If it was tough on those

who lost loved ones during the ‘Great War,’ I came to realise that it was equally so for those who came home. There were no provisions made for those who came home to Blighty. My grandfather together with thousands of others tramped the streets looking for work.

And what of the men who did not fallWho came home at the end of it all?

Tramp, tramp go their feetIn search of work

To pay for their meat.Their families did not understand

What pressure they faced. For it was found that injuries

Cannot always be seenSome scars run deep.

Tramp, tramp, tramp go their feetTired and wearyProud and torn.

What was their glory?Where had it gone? They had no gloryThey had no dole

There was no help, no help at all.Tramp, tramp, tramp go my grandfather’s

feet, looking for work.

BRIGHT IDEAS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE IN THE DARK EVENINGS

At the end of the month, Sunday 28th October, the clocks go back and homes are in darkness early in the afternoon - a gift for opportunist burglars.

Unfortunately burglars see the longer winter nights as an opportunity to increase criminal activities. To avoid becoming a victim of burglary; Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Council’s Joint Community Safety team is encouraging homeowners to take some simple steps to help protect their home:

• Use a timer switch to turn on lights and a radio to give the impression someone is home

• Keep valuables and other electronic equipment such as laptops out of sight

• Security mark valuables with a UV pen and register them with www.immobilise.com

• Double lock UPVC doors or use dead locks on solid doors

• Keep all spare keys, including car keys, away from the front door and out of sight to avoid them being ‘fished’ through the letter box

• Keep windows locked with the key and keep it out of sight

• Don’t leave packaging of expensive items purchased on view as an advertisement to thieves

Neighbourhood Police Officers will be patrolling in residential areas and if they believe a property is at risk of being burgled, they will pop a ‘Here’s a bright idea’ card through the door along with contact details for further crime prevention advice.Residents can pick up security advice by following @TVP_ChiltSBucks and @csafetycdcsbdc on Twitter. For regular updates on crime and disorder in your area you can sign up to Thames Valley Alert. For further advice on crime reduction contact Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Council’s Joint Community Safety team on 01494 586535 or visit:- https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/cp/crime-prevention/residential-burglary/ www.chiltern.gov.uk/crimereduction or www.southbucks.gov.uk/crimereduction.

BEACONSFIELD COMMUNITY MAGAZINE We are looking for a volunteer to promote the magazine

to potential advertisers As and when you have some free time you would approach local businesses

in the town either in person, by telephone or email to encourage them to advertise their services in the magazine.

We know subscribers often turn to the BCM when looking for local services.

Quote from a retiring advertiser “I wish to cancel my advert in the Beaconsfield Community Magazine, as I am now heading towards retirement.

“I have to say that the Magazine has been the ideal advertising platform for me over the many years I have been in practice. It really does seem to be the 'go to' place when people are searching for something.

“I hope whoever takes over my advertising space is as successful with their business as I have been.”

POLICE AND LOCAL YOUNGSTERS MAKE MUSIC FOR A GOOD CAUSE

A Community Project organised and led by local PCSO Denise Hawkes supported by Bucks CC Youth Service and local businesses has been taking place over the Easter and the summer holidays. 14 twelve to sixteen year olds have been working together with PCSO Hawkes and Delroy Murray Song Corporation, Bucks Youth Workers Rachel Curtis and Suzanne Osbourne to create a song about decision making related to knife crime, sexual exploitation, bullying, mental health and drug crimes. The 14 local youths all came forward to work together to produce a CD to safeguard their peers and in so doing they were able to work with musicians, in a recording type studio and to gain an AQA Level 1 education certificate. Thanks not only go to PCSO Hawkes and her initiative but Chris Owen

the then Mayor who supported the project along with local businesses who provided the finances for nourishment for the youths. The meetings took place courtesy of Holtspur Youth Club. PCSO Hawkes said the group had had good fun, playing games and making music, discussing important issues and building bonds and understanding as well as contacts for the future.

NEW FAMILY GYM OPENING Rachel Harling, together with her partner, Frazer McArdell is launching a new gym which opens on Monday 1st October. Named ‘The Fit House,’ it will be situated above the Chalfont St Peter Cricket Club at Chalfont Park, SL9 0QA.

Rachel’s aim is to make The Fit House a family gym which becomes an important part of the local community. It will provide services for the whole family, where mums

and dads can bring the kids to enjoy a wide variety of fitness based activities.

Rachel, originally from Seer Green, has recently returned from Singapore where she was managing a gym and Frazer is a highly experienced rugby coach and an ex-college teacher.
