Spring Gardening by Brenda Lyon

Spring is an exciting time in the garden. Winter in Oberon can be bleak, however the emergence of flowering bulbs, daffodils, crocus hyacinths, tritelias (blue stars) and tulips make the spring experience especially exciting. So get out and appreciate natures beauties. The winter flowering shrubs, Erica darleyensis and viburnums are finishing ready for the burst of colours from the magnolias and Mollis azaleas.

Spring Gardening Tips By Oberon Garden Club September can be an unpredictable garden month in Oberon. We have experienced one of the heaviest snowfalls in years - who knows when our true Spring weather will begin! However, bulbs are starting to flower and here are a few jobs should be done: Now is the time to prune fruit trees and roses. Hydrangeas should have their spent blooms removed to the first pair of fat buds. Tomato plants can be started under protection, for planting out later. Lawn mowing will be starting so remember to service your mower ready for busy

times ahead. Enjoy flowering shrubs such as Camellias and the first bulbs. Look forward to more gardening tips in future newsletters.

A Message from The Mayor Kathy Sajowitz

Did You Know…? There are thirty seven bridges in the Local

Government Area. Seven are owned and

funded by the NSW State Government,

five are state owned but managed by

council and twenty six are fully owned and

funded by council - culvert crossings are

not included as they are not officially

classified as bridges.

The LGA is 3627sq kms with 510kms of

unsealed road and 445kms of sealed

roads, population per councillor (9) 634.

There are 667 active businesses in the

area.

There is approximately 40 kilometres of

reticulated water mains in the township

including 9.4 kilometres of trunk main.

There is 43,491 hectares of NSW Forestry

Corp owned forest, planted at an average

of 1,100 trees per hectare this equates to

47,840,100 pines in the LGA. According to

Mr Google one hectare of pine absorbs

ten tonnes of carbon per year; although

pines are not as efficient as some other

species.

The Oberon township is 1113 metres

above sea level, Shooters Hill is the forth

highest point in Central Tablelands at

1355mts.

Median sale price for houses $344,500 as

at December 2018.

Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy

began his football career with Oberon

Tigers in the 1970’s.

450 tonnes of scrap metal was deposited

at the Oberon Waste Facility over the past

twelve months.

The third highest point in Central

Tablelands is Mt Trickett, a mountain in

the Gt Dividing Range about 5kms nth

east of Gingkin and 6 kms west of Jenolan

Caves. 1362mts above sea level. Named

after Oliver Trickett who was the surveyor,

mapper and modeller for Jenolan Caves.

He became the Chief Superintendent of

the caves overseeing all access

improvements in the early 1900’s.

These folk were born in Oberon: Greens

Politician Bob Brown, sports commentator

Ken Sutcliffe, Super Motard driver Scott

Saul and Penrith Rugby League player

Mark Booth.

During 2018/19 14,775 visits were

recorded at the Oberon Pool, 12,194

library resources were loaned and

approximately 10,500 tonnes of rubbish

were entombed at the Oberon Waste

Facility.

From 1923 – 1979 Oberon was served by

a branch railway line noted for its steep

4% gradients and sharp 100mt radius

curves. Following closure the line fell into

disrepair and has been under restoration

by OTHR since 2005.

Gold was first discovered in the Fish River

by surveyor James McBrien in 1823

The village of Oberon was proclaimed in

1863 and Oberon Shire Council was

formed in 1906

The village of Burraga is home to

Australia’s tallest round brick chimney.

Built in 1899 for the Copper Mine but

never actually used, it consists of 500,000

bricks and stands at a height of 54.26

meters.

How many parking fines were issued by

Oberon Council last year? None!!!

Because we are such a “nice” council.

Oberon Youth Council Meeting 25 September

5.30pm-6.30pm Council Chambers, 137-139 Oberon St, Oberon

New members are always welcome

Oberon Local Government Week The theme for 2019 “Your Council” was a great opportunity for Oberon Council to showcase and celebrate the work and services we provide to the community. Council took a grader to the Oberon, Black Springs and St Joseph Primary Schools for Local Government Week. This display gave the children a first-hand look at how some services are delivered in the community and to talk to some council staff members. Council’s Deputy Mayor, Kerry Gibbons and Technical Services Director, Chris Schumacher spoke of the work done for the community in relation to roads, bridges, water, sewer and playgrounds. Students showed a keen interest in the grader and how it operated, and were given an opportunity to ask lots of questions before walking around to have an up close and personal grader experience.

Council Executive Management Team also held talks with the Oberon High School year 10, 11 and 12 students on Friday relating employment opportunities available to local students. Students were encouraged to approach Council about work experience while still at school. A position at Oberon Council could give students an opportunity to gain experience and qualifications in many fields (science at the Water/Sewer Treatment Plants, labourer or plant operators, finance, planners, engineers, community services, administration, mechanics, etc.).

Make Water Your Drink Do you know how much sugar is in your favourite drink? It may be more than you think. Excess sugar contributes to dental disease, obesity and diabetes so knowing how much you are getting in a day can help you to reduce these risks. Make water your drink of choice and keep

a water bottle near you. Limit sugary drinks

to special occasions and eat fruit rather

than drinking fruit juice.

On Thursday September 19 2019, stop what you’re doing for one hour and pick up a book. We want people to either rediscover or introduce themselves to the benefits of reading. Take the time to learn, escape and relax. In children, reading has been shown to help with identity formation, setting them up for success in the future. In adults, reading has been shown to reduce stress by 68% more than listening to music, going for a walk, or having a cup of tea. This year’s ambassadors include Anthony Field (Blue Wiggle), Mick Elliott, Rachel Johns and Karen Manbullo.

O'Connell Public School

150th Anniversary

O'Connell Public School will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Saturday, 21 September 2019.

A social gathering will be held on the evening of Friday 20th. On Saturday, the school will be open from 10am - 2pm.

The public are warmly invited to visit and view displays, catch up with friends and learn something about the story of our school, from its transition from a Denominational School in the grounds of St Thomas Church, to a Public School in 1869, and then to its current site in 1876 in Black's Mill Lane.

Find us on Facebook at O'Connell 150th or contact the school on 6337 5725 or email [email protected] or [email protected]

History of O’Connell Public School The role of the Anglican Church in the early colony was significant and no less so in O'Connell. In a struggling convict settlement, voluntary resources were inadequate for the 'lower orders' and State assistance was given to the Church of England to establish and maintain schools. An O'Connell school existed in the grounds of St Thomas church on Beaconsfield Rd, from around 1849 and in January 1869, after much debate, the Local Board of the O'Connell School considered that one Public School could be opened and so they leased the building to the Council of Education (the Government body) for £20 per annum until such time as a site and building for a Public school could be acquired. Mr John Black owned a mill, below the current school, on the Fish River. In 1874 he gave about 1 acre of land for a new school, which did not front the Bathurst Road, now Black's Mill Lane. Mr John Stanford's contract of £430 was accepted and the building was completed in December 1876. Mr C.L. Street was the first teacher in the O'Connell Public School in Black's Mill Lane. The need for more land was recognised and in 1907, Mr Black, who owned the land between the school and the road, sold it for £20, thereby giving the school more land and also access from the Bathurst Road. 100 years later the 1876 building had fallen into some disrepair and was scheduled for sale with some land, or demolition. The P&C resisted this and leased the building for $20 per annum from the Dept. That ceased in the early 1980s and we still have a wonderful building, and others for you to visit at our Anniversary on 21 September 2019, from 10am - 2pm. Enquiries on 6337 5725, [email protected] or O'Connell 150th Anniversary Facebook page.

RACING COMING TO OBERON Oberon Council is pleased to announce a partnership with Spartan Race Australia, which will see a Spartan Race hosted in the Oberon Region for the next 3 years (2020 – 2022). Spartan is the world’s #1 obstacle race series with events varying in length and difficulty ranging from 7km to marathon distances. Races are held in USA and franchised to 40 countries including Canada, many European countries, South Korea, and Australia. The recently announced Oberon event (7th & 8th March 2020) will be one of 5 signature events in the Spartan Australia / NZ calendar, with 5000 people expected to travel to Oberon enjoying the Sprint Race (5km), Beast (21km), Hurricane Heats and Kids Race (2.5km).

Spartan Race Oberon will be one of 11 events on the Spartan 2020 calendar and the only event to be held in inland NSW.

90% of the participants are expected to come from outside of the Central West, with interstate and international demand for Spartan Australia signature events predicted to be strong. Participants will be greeted by a track that incorporates steep terrain, rural vistas and the picturesque backdrop of Lake Oberon.

Outside of the immediate tourism benefits of 5000 people visiting our town over the weekend, an event of this stature brings ongoing promotion, business, trade and capability development opportunities for the town. The visiting athletes will require an array of services such as accommodation, food and beverage, transport, entertainment, sightseeing etc. Residents, local organisations and businesses are encouraged to leverage the opportunity. Any interested parties can contact council’s Visitor Information Centre for more information and or find the ticketing and venue details at www.spartanrace.com.au

We proudly present our 23rd fine music concert, with ever-popular Rachel Scott! “Bach in the Dark” returns to Mount David! Rachel is joined by percussionist Ben Sibson for a concert with a difference! They play to full houses in the crypt of St James, or Nolan on Lovel and other Sydney venues. As Rachel says: “Maybe you’re closer to the magical Mount David. Or maybe you can’t just get enough cello and percussion, and remember how fun previous concerts were! We’d love to see you here.” The program will include some renaissance dances and Bach’s third suite for solo cello playing with hand drums from around the world. Your toes will be tapping – guaranteed! If any crazy ever thought Bach was dull....they will discover otherwise soon. Most of you already know the magic Rachel weaves around the classics. The Oberon District Museum Society will receive $1,463 from the Museums and Galleries NSW Small Grants program for its 1930s depiction of Oberon Streetscape.

“The support from the NSW Government means the Oberon District Museum can install a toughened-glass protective barrier around the display,” Mr Toole said. “The protective glass that will surround the display means the figurines are now protected because they are so fragile that handling them could lead to some being broken or cracked.”

People ivolved in the project included Annie Lewis, Edie Dennis, Brenda Lyon, Pauline Lewis, Eileen Connell, Meg Worthington, Liz Ferry, Bill Whitton, Judy Richards, Jill Evans, Manu, Kay Carter, Julie Bowden, Mary Blattman, Lucia Koff, Emma Whalan, Bessie Stillwell, Rosemary

Brigden, Sandra Barlett, Ray Hawken, Terry Carter and Lisa Bailey.

Minister for the Arts, Hon Don Harwin MP said “smaller museums across the State often need to make key improvements that will bring benefits for years to come and the NSW Government is pleased to offer that support”.

Hon Paul Toole MP, left, with Oberon District Museum volunteers Sue Roberts, Pam Dellow and Col Roberts with the pottery streetscape from the
