Oregon Food Bank | STATEWIDE | oregonfoodbank.org
Oregon Food Bank helps approximately one in five households that struggle with hunger in Oregon and Clark County, Washington. Through a statewide network of regional food banks and partner agencies (food pantries, meal sites, etc.) it serves an average of 900,000 people annually. Last year almost 87 million pounds of food was collected for distribution. This food comes from farmers, manufacturers, retailers, and individuals. Oregon Food Bank also provides educational programs. The Learning Gardens give people hands-on experience growing fresh produce, while Cooking Matters® teaches budgeting, shopping and basic kitchen skills.
ACCESS | MEDFORD | accesshelps.org
ACCESS, the Community Action Agency for Jackson County, is part of Oregon Food Bank’s network. Each month, it provides more than 3,700 emergency food boxes—a three- to five-day supply of groceries—through 24 food pantries located around the county. With the help of volunteers, the agency also grows fresh produce in its seven gardens. ACCESS relies on donations from local businesses and individuals to support emergency assistance programs such as food, housing, medical equipment, and weatherization. With the support of the local community, ACCESS assisted over 43,000 individuals last year.

Many Oregon workers are employed in rewarding jobs that benefit others. They keep us safe and secure, feed the hungry, provide medical care, and educate children—just to name a few of the public service organizations featured in this issue of our calendar. We struggled to choose only 14—good work is being done by hundreds of our policyholders in every corner of Oregon. Although we could only include a handful on these pages, we want you to know that we value the work they all do.

Redmond Fire and Rescue | REDMOND | redmondfireandrescue.org
If a fire or other emergency occurs in the Redmond area, staff from Redmond Fire and Rescue are ready to respond. More than 40 full-time firefighters/paramedics and 30 volunteers provide emergency medical response, fire suppression, and rescue services to the 280-square-mile fire district. The ambulance service district covers 320 square miles. Redmond Fire and Rescue serves approximately 42,000 citizens out of four fire stations—Redmond, Terrebonne, Cline Falls, and the Redmond Airport. Specially trained members of the team serve as aircraft rescue firefighters (ARFF), working round the clock at the Redmond Airport. Every year, ARFF members must complete 40 hours of specialized and live fire training (pictured here).

Wallowa County Health Care District | ENTERPRISE | wchcd.org
Residents of Wallowa County often work in hazardous occupations—logging and ranching, for example—which are located miles from the nearest town. Without Wallowa Memorial Hospital, a 25 bed critical access hospital, a serious accident or illness could mean many hours of travel to get help. With its designation as a Level IV trauma center, the hospital is prepared to handle emergencies on a 24-hour basis with an experienced trauma team. And a four-wheel drive ambulance can reach rugged back country locations even on winter roads. Among many other services, the hospital offers the Complete Health Improvement Program (CHIP) to local citizens, who gather for nutritious dinners and learn about how to improve their health and prevent chronic disease.

IRCO | PORTLAND | irco.org
For 40 years, the Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) in Portland has provided services to help immigrants and refugees in their adjustment to life in the U.S. Their goal is to create a self-sufficient, healthy, and inclusive multi-ethnic society. During the 1970s, when refugees were fleeing the wars in Southeast Asia, a group of Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian refugees formed the Indochinese Cultural and Service Center. This organization joined the Southeast Asian Refugee Federation to create the organization that became IRCO. Programs within the organization include the Asian Family Center, Africa House, a senior center, and translation and interpretation services. Pictured here: a fundraising gala for Africa House and a bike clinic held in partnership with Community Cycling Center for recent immigrants.

Western Lane Ambulance | FLORENCE | wlambulance.com
Western Lane Ambulance District often receives calls to the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area, a common site for injuries. Rescues there would be difficult without the collaboration of Siuslaw Valley Fire and Rescue and the use of the district’s off-road rescue vehicle, equipped with wide tires, a winch, specialty medical gear, and drivers trained to handle difficult driving conditions. In addition to providing emergency medical services to western Lane County—about 1,000 square miles of towns, forests, and sand dunes—the district provides a number of other community services, including first aid training, CPR classes, active shooter training, mass casualty training, car seat clinics, water safety, and bike helmet programs. For area seniors, it provides information on heart attacks, stroke prevention and intervention, diabetes awareness, and high blood pressure.

City of Prineville | PRINEVILLE | cityofprineville.com
Most Oregon cities offer regular municipal services, like water, sewer, police, fire, and city parks, but few operate their own railways. The City of Prineville boasts the oldest continuously operated municipal short line in the U.S. Formed in 1918, the railway provides shipping for local industries, connecting Prineville with the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and the Union Pacific Railroads at Prineville Junction three miles north of Redmond. The city also operates Meadow Lakes Golf Course, a recipient of Golf Digest’s first Environmental Leaders Award, and the Prineville/Crook County Airport, which has an on-site commercial pilot training facility and provides other aviation services, such as refueling.

Oregon Humane Society | PORTLAND | oregonhumane.org
Most people think of the Oregon Humane Society (OHS) as nothing more than a place to adopt a new pet, but it does much more. Educators at OHS teach school-aged children about humane treatment of animals, and the spay and save program offers low and no-cost spaying and neutering for cats owned by low-income residents in the Portland area. And did you know that the Oregon Humane Society has a rescue team? When your pet is trapped or stranded in a place that can only be accessed safely using technical rescue equipment, trained Oregon Humane Society volunteers can help. But you can still adopt your next best friend there. In 2015, the number of pets adopted was more than 11,000.

The hospital provides 24-hour, seven-days-a-week surgical coverage with gynecology, ophthalmology, orthopedic, and urology procedures available. The Dietary Department offers services not only to patients, but also staff and community members with dietary concerns. The facility’s Family Care Clinic offers a full range of health care services to the community, and, for patients who need specialty care, a schedule of visiting specialists including cardiology, gynecology, neurology, oncology, orthopedic, and pulmonology.

Research has shown that children who aren’t reading at grade level by third grade are more likely to drop out of high school and struggle with reading as adults. That is why SMART (Start Making A Reader Today)—also known as Oregon Children’s Foundation—has made childhood literacy its mission. Through SMART, volunteers read one-on-one with children needing support in pre-kindergarten through third grade. Children in the program receive new books each month, which they can keep and read with their families. In 2014, about 14,000 Oregon third graders were reading below benchmark levels. SMART believes that number is far too high, and its 5,000 volunteers work to assure that more children have the promising future that literacy can provide.
