WelcomeBBQ I’m sure I speak for all of the AIChE student chapter
when I say that after a relaxing summer break, we
couldn’t wait for classes to start again! To celebrate
the start of a new semester, AIChE Mentorship set up
a barbeque cookout Friday, September 6th from
11:30 – 1:00. Students got the chance to enjoy free
food, socialize, and meet new classmates. In those
two and a half hours, over 125 students attended,
making it one of our most successful events of the
semester!
Intramural Soccer AIChE KICKed off the Fall semester right, creating
AIChE’s most dominant IM team to date…at least for
one game. Not only did we win the first game by 6
points, but Delfina – our social chair – leveled a guy
on the other team, asserting our reputation as the
ruthless team-to-beat. However, despite having
more than 20 students on the team, we were
crippled by the lack of females in attendance and the
rest of the games did not go as well.
BASF Tailgate For the Michigan vs. Akron football game on
September 14th, AIChE hosted a tailgate with BASF on
Elbel field catered by Panera and Marco’s Pizza.
AIChE members had a fantastic time talking to
recruiters, learning about careers at BASF, and eating
free food. Approximately 50 members attened,
which was so impressive that BP (who had a tailgate
set up right next to ours) inquired how they could
have their tailgate be sponsored by AIChE as well.
BASF even had a raffle where a few lucky chemical
engineers got to sit next to the recruiters at the
game!

Night with Industry On Friday, September 20th, AIChE hosted the annual
Night with Industry. Sophomore ChEs got the
opportunity to learn more about the companies
visiting the career fair, receive resume critiques, and
network with the recruiters. The company
representatives sat down and talked with the
mentees about the role of a chemical engineer in
their industry, how to begin conversations with a
recruiter at Career Fair, and everything in between.
We had a good turnout with approximately 45
students attending.
Rocktober 4th At 8:00pm on (you guessed it) October 4th, AIChE
members gathered at the Rock to show all of U of M
why we aren’t art students. Fueled by cider and
donuts, ChEs decorated the Rock with their favorite
thermo derivations, McCabe-Thiele columns, and all
the equations we’ve come to know and love.
Hopefully this becomes a tradition to remind Ann
Arbor that ‘ChemE Nation’ is still around!
Dexter Cider Mill Trip After the success of Rocktober 4th, ChEs could not
wait to get in the spirit of fall. So a few weeks later,
on October 20th, AIChE organized a trip to the Dexter
Cider Mill. Not only did the students get a taste of
some fresh cider and donuts, but they were also
given a tour of the facility and get an insider’s peek
at how the cider is produced.

AIChE National Conference From November 1st through 3rd, half of the officers
flew out to San Francisco, California to attend the
AIChE National Conference. Once there, the officers
attended a variety of seminars by professors,
professional engineers, and chemical engineering
organizations. Officers Alex Kolb and Scott
Thierbacker gave a presentation on maintaining a
healthy relationship with a sister chapter.
The AIChE chapter at U of M also received the
Outstanding Student Chapter Award (for being in the
top 10% of AIChE student chapters) for the fifth year
in a row! In addition, Michael Meldrum and Martha
Neubauer received the Outstanding Freshman and
Outstanding Sophomore award respectively.
ChemE Car This year, the ChemE Car Team qualified for nationals
by finishing within the top 5 in the regional
competition! Several representatives from ChemE
Car joined the officers on the trip to San Francisco to
participate in the competition. Despite having the
back axel bent in shipping, and with the support of
Professor Fogler and the AIChE officers, they placed
23rd out of 32 teams competing. The car would have
finished in the top 10, but the stopping reaction did
not work as planned in the second run. The team is
currently preparing for the North Central Regional
Competition in early April at Michigan State.
Alex and Scott both believe that proper hydration is the key to any good
presentation

Marathon Plant Tour Collaborating with the Professor Tadd and the
Detroit Marathon Refinery, AIChE Mentorship
offered a day-long plant tour to ChEs on December
3rd. The students first learned about the refining
process over lunch and then explored the plant via a
guided driving tour.
Ice Skating At Yost As the semester winded to a close and ChEs began
retreating back into the most isolated spots in the
library, AIChE hosted one last study break on
December 7th: a trip to Yost for students to skate all
their stress away and drown their studying sorrows
with hot cocoa and cookies. Members were
encouraged to get festive by wearing ugly Christmas
sweaters.
Sophomore Gingerbread Competition The sophomores decided to get in the Christmas
spirit a little early and hosted a gingerbread house
building competition on December 7th. Being good
engineers (and staying within budget), they decided
to use graham crackers instead of actual
gingerbread. Working on a tight budget, some
students still created some pretty cool things!

Fortunately, ChEs did not have to stare down the U of M hockey team
