CAN Mining & Engineering Supplies CC was founded in 1988. The company started as a milling company and later diversified into an engineering company manufacturing scrapers for the mining industry.

In 1992 chutes became a focusing point as possible product of supply to the mining industry. The Spilminator, as brainchild was started in 1985 in conceptual form and introduced to the mining industry in 1994.

In 2012 CAN Engineering Supplies was bought over by new management and the name of the company was changed to CAN Mining Management.

In 2016 CAN Mining Management was bought over via a management buyout and the name changed to CAN Engineering Worx.

CAN Engineering Worx is committed to providing the mining industry with excellent service and solutions both above and below ground.

By leveraging and developing our key competencies, we are able to deliver efficient and safe contract mining and engineering solutions to mining operations across South Africa.

The control of material flow in ore passes and loading pockets is potentially one of the most hazardous operations in underground mining.

Chutes are transfer points in material handling used in the mining industry for controlled removal of broken ore from stopes and ore passes into hauling vessels by force of gravity and is almost as old as mining itself. The first notable chute used was the “Cousin Jack” chute made only by timber.

THE ORIGIN OF CHUTES IN THE MINING INDUSTRY

An American survey proved that in a 20-year span 75% of all fatalities and incidents in the mining industry were caused by chute related applications. A chute, as a safety critical device, always needs to:

• Guide material in a controlled way onto carts or conveyor structures;

• Eliminate material spillage;• Enclose material dribbles;• Enclose material from operating personnel;• Eliminate dust liberation

Each mine is unique and material attributes and properties must always be taken into account during the designing process of chutes. The following must be taken into account:

• Size Distribution;• Lump size;• Moisture content of ore;• Angle of repose;• Static and Dynamic Load that the chute must

withstand;• Density of rock;• Abrasiveness of the ore

Our chutes are always designed for the worst possible conditions and material characteristics.

Belt FeederSide Wall Bulkhead Structure

Responding to the recurring issue of spillage and mud rushes in the platinum mines in the Rustenburg area, Anglo Platinum approached CAN Engineering Worx to conduct research and find a solution to the problem.

The first prototype of the Spillminator Chute was built and tested at Amandelbult Platinum Mine in 1992 and it was found that the chute handled mud rushes very well with minimal spillage. Crucially, the Spillminator increased the safety of the mining personnel by controlling this recurring hazard.

It also proved to reduce down-time and production loss efficiently. The Spillminator is currently the only design which can effectively stop and hold a mud rush.

Spillminator Chute criteria

We offer Side Wall Chutes, Hanging Wall Chutes, and Belt Feeders.

• In accordance with SANS specification 0208, the chute is designed for a nominal design pressure of 840kPa in platinum mines and 600 kPa in goldmines.

• 840 kPa is equivalent to a 30m ore pass filled with UG2 slurry (hydrostatic head).

• The design code states that the hydrostatic head will stay 840 kPa Platform 30m upwards.

• The standard throat opening on our Side Wall Chutes is 1100mm x 1000mm, and on the Hanging Wall Chute 1200mm x 1200mm, with an over-break of 400mm. Designs can be adapted to accommodate client requirements.

• Both the doors are designed to withstand direct pressure of 840 kPa.

• A risk assessment on the operation and maintenance procedure is available on request.

• Our standard liners are based on Hardox 450 liners. Any liners can be supplied to accommodate the client’s requirements.

The first MK1 Spilminator chute was designed and manufactured by CAN. This chute was commissioned in 1994 on Amandelbult with huge success in preventing any production delays or safety incidents during mud rushes.

The first AP1 was launched as a new improvement on the MK4.

The AP3 was launched as synergistic outcome between CAN and Anglo Platinum.

The MK6 Retro chute was designed and launched by CAN as replacement for Sibanye Gold’s old chutes.

The MK6 was designed for gold mine applications in compliance with SANS Specifications.

The MK2 Spilminator chute was designed and launched due to new SANS Specifications.

The MK3 Spilminator chute was designed for Anglo Platinum according to new SANS Specification and with the help Anglo Technical Department.

The MK4 chute was launched as a new improvement on the MK3 Spilminator.

Control Panel

• The Spillminator Chute operates with a double valve control panel fitted with a filter and lubricator.

• The working pressure for a control panel is 6 bar.

• The control panel is fitted with a “dead man’s” valve for safety purposes. Should the control panel be abandoned, the two doors of the chute close automatically.

• The control panel is fitted with a lockout valve.

• The control panel must be installed 10m from the chute for safety purposes.

Hoses and fittings

• A set of four 15m hoses and fittings are supplied.

• Hoses are tested up to 160 bar.

• The Tubular bulkhead was designed as a more cost effective and stronger chute for hanging and side wall applications. Due to the properties of a tubular structure, this design is stronger and quicker to install;

• The Over break Structure was designed to accommodate over breaking during the blasting process. This new product ensures a safe and compliant installation in the worst environment;
