MIDFIELD TERMINAL COMPLEX
ABU DHABI
Client:
Location:
Scope:
Abu Dhabi Airports / Honeywell
Abu Dhabi Airport, Midfield Terminal
Acoustics
Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) is
one of the fastest growing airport hubs in
the world. The Midfield Terminal Complex
(MTC) is being constructed to
accommodate the growing passenger
traffic at AUH which is forecast to rise to 45
million per year by 2025. As such, parking
facilities are being created to house 3,400
cars in the Short-Term covered parking and
1,500 cars in the Long-Term parking.
WADG scope of work included data
collection and acoustic simulation (in
coordination with Honeywell), EASE
modeling, PA/VA system design
optimization, acoustic simulation, client
advisory management, modeling and
engineering advise.
WADG won the assignment based upon its
outstanding fundamental approach to
acoustics, the background and history of its
specialists, and previous successful
achievements in large public infra-structure
works, including King Fahd Stadium, and
STI performance certification
measurements at Terminals 1 & 2 of the
existing Abu Dhabi airport.
WADG has successfully met all initial EASE
modeling and subsequent on-ground
testing has surpassed the required acoustic
parameters envisioned by the Etihad
design team for all areas, specifically the
first class lounge areas, passenger
walkways, Public, VIP and check-in areas.
WADG is proud to help Etihad Airways and
Abu Dhabi Airports in their quest to support
the governments 2030 Strategic Vision
Abu Dhabi Airports multi-billion dollar upgrade scheme centers
around the new Midfield Terminal Building. Designed as a
destination in its own right, and focused on providing travelers
a world-class experience where luxury and opulence are the
standard, the new MTC encompasses 700,000 sq. of internal
space. The design philosophy centers around creating a sense
of place for all travelers, and a “haven of peace, calm, and
luxury” for guests in its lounge areas.
WADG was contracted to advise, test, measure and
recommend acoustic parameters that meet the overall design
philosophy-no small task for a building of this size and
complexity, capable to process 8,500 passengers an hour and
more than 30 million per year, through spaces as diverse as
24/7 first class lounges, bars, buffets, check-in areas, VIP
check-in areas, baggage claim, walkways, prayer rooms,
business centers, cargo facilities and duty free shops.
Additionally, and requiring specific attention from WADG was
the functional impact of the acoustic parameters on the PA/VA
system performance - performance which cannot be
compromised and must function fully during the most critical of
times, times of emergency such as fire, lost children, security
alerts, etc.

Development by Dubai International Real
Estate (DIRE), is one of the most prestigious
projects in Dubai. The land is located on the
Dubai Creek between the legendary Creek
Golf Club and Al Makhtoum Bridge near
Dubai International Airport. Kieferle & Partner
in JV with Kling Consultants have together
acquired the project after winning an
international level competition.

serviced apartment towers, F&B outlets,
marina clubhouse, event spaces and
residential towers
Scope of work: Acoustic design
consultancy;
Project program analysis and review;
Establish design development requirements;
Key focus areas: generate acoustic reports
for environmental noise influence on the
facade construction; analysis, review, and
comments on acoustic performance of
proposed facade and glazing assemblies for
sound isolation; analysis and review on
acoustic treatment for sound infiltration
between adjacent spaces; acoustic materials
and datasheets.
Direct interface with architects, designers,
engineers and other team members ongoing
throughout the process to ensure proper
acoustic systems, materials and detailing
techniques to isolate, absorb, attenuate,
enclose, or otherwise prevent in coordination
with the interior design teal, the intrusion and
control of noise.
Jewel of the Creek, the $1.3 billion, mixed use development is in
the heart of the Deira Creek district and will become an urban
centre and prominent landmark. When complete the complex
will house 8 apartments buildings, 4 serviced hotel/apartments,
3 office towers, 2 hotels, a conference center and hospitality
areas covering 123,955 sqm of land.
WADG was hired from the conception of the project as the
consultant in charge of building acoustics and room acoustic
design. As this project is in the heart of an already bustling
urban district, with major auto thoroughfares, boat traffic, and
overhead airplane flight patterns it presented a unique set of
challenges for sound attenuation and ambient noise mitigation.
Deliverables required from WADG a range from acoustic
schematic design reports and evaluations to final acoustic
design reports and detail drawings. Tender evaluation
documents and technical details were also part of the
deliverables.
