Compartiendo la Alegría del Evangelio Juntos en Cristo

January 21, 2018 Dear Parishioners and Supporters of St. Joseph Ca-thedral Parish,

The Church has been entrusted with a sacred mission, to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the world. As individuals we proclaim the Gospel as we live our lives with compassion, mercy and love. As a parish community we make this proclamation through wor-ship, outreach, and formation. As a diocese we trans-cend parish boundaries and limitations to proclaim this good news of God’s love to people throughout Santa Clara County.

Each year the Diocese of San Jose invites every par-ish to support this mission through the Annual Dioce-san Appeal. The theme of this year’s ADA is “Sharing the Joy of Gospel, Together in Christ”. The ADA supports diocesan initiatives, programs, and ministry to accomplish this goal.

These initiatives, programs and ministries are far be-yond our capacity as a parish. They include the for-mation of lay and ordained leaders, outreach to mar-ginalized and isolated persons, and support of the Bishop’s office. In addition, they provide support for maintenance and preservation of our cathedral.

We benefit directly as a parish through this campaign. In addition to the subsidy we receive as the cathedral parish, twenty percent of my salary is subsidized for my work in the Chancery Office. All funds raised above our goal are returned and these funds assist us meet our operational expenses.

Our goal this year is $135,500. Through your gener-osity we exceeded our goal last year. Thank you. I appeal to your generosity again this year. I know that together we can meet and exceed this financial goal. A concurrent goal of 100% participation will ensure our success.

Thank you for your ongoing generosity and the many ways you support the St. Joseph Cathedral Parish and the Diocese of San Jose.

Sincerely, Fr. Joseph M. Benedict, Pastor

The Gospel of Mark begins by re-porting on the preaching of John the Baptist. Immediately after describing the work of John the Baptist, Mark reports on Jesus’ baptism and his temptation in the desert. Jesus’ public

ministry begins after the arrest of John the Baptist. Mark wants his readers to understand the important connection between the end of the ministry of John the Baptist and the beginning of Jesus’ own ministry. Jesus preaches the Kingdom of God in continuity with the preaching of John the Baptist. Like John the Baptist, Jesus’ pronouncement of the kingdom is a call to repentance. Yet Jesus’ preaching begins the time of fulfillment; the Kingdom of God is already here. This will be demonstrated again and again, both in Jesus’ words and in the actions that follow. Jesus’ healings and forgiveness of sins are signs of the Kingdom of God that he announces in his teach-ing. In contrast to last week’s Gospel, in Mark’s Gospel Jesus takes the initiative in calling his first disciples rather than following the typical practice of first-century rabbinical schools for students to seek out rabbis, asking to be their disciples. In Mark’s Gospel, Jesus breaks with this tradition and invites his disciples to learn from him. Jesus is said to have first called four fishermen—Simon, Andrew, James, and John. Simon and Andrew are brothers. Jesus promises that he will make them “fishers of men.” James and John are also brothers. Mark does not re-port Jesus' words of invitation to them, but he does report that they left their fishing immediately; their father, Zebedee, was left behind in the boat. Mark’s Gospel is told with a great sense of urgency and immediacy. Jesus is a person of action, and events occur in rapid succession. Time is of the es-sence; the fishermen immediately put aside their livelihood to become Jesus’ disciples. The Kingdom of God is here and now. The time of fulfillment is at hand. How might our lives be different if we more fully shared this sense of the immediacy of God’s kingdom? Loyola Press

S aint of the Week Saint Agnes of Rome - January 21 (d.c. 258)

Saint Agnes’ Story Almost nothing is known of this saint except that she was very young—12 or 13—when she was martyred in the last half of the third cen- tury. Various modes of death have been suggested—beheading, burning, strangling. Legend has it that Agnes was a beautiful girl whom many young men wanted to marry. Among those she refused, one reported her to the authorities for being a Christian. She was arrested and confined to a house of prostitution. The legend con- tinues that a man who looked upon her lust- fully lost his sight and had it restored by her prayer. Agnes was condemned, executed, and buried near Rome in a catacomb that eventually was named after her. The daughter of Constantine, Constantina, built a basilica in her honor.

Reflection Like that of Maria Goretti in the 20th century, the martyr-dom of a virginal young girl made a deep impression on a society enslaved to a materialistic outlook. Also like Aga-tha, who died in similar circumstances, Agnes is a symbol that holiness does not depend on length of years, experi-ence, or human effort. It is a gift God offers to all. Saint Agnes is the Patron Saint of: Girls Girl Scouts

S
