welcome

welcome from the pmi uk president, chris field

Chris and the PMI UK Chapter Board would like to express their warm welcome to all those who are attending today’s event. They would also like to take this opportunity to thank the hosts, Microsoft, the other sponsors, and our Volunteers, without whom the event would not have been possible.

For the past seven years Chris has worked for Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a large IT service provider in a variety of senior project and programme management roles. Prior to TCS he worked for

a number of household names including General Motors, Whitbread and P&G ALWAYS in Project Management roles.

As President of the UK Chapter Chris has been involved with some of our most exciting developments including: the move to a FREE IPM Day; the introduction of webinars for those not able to make Chapter meetings; the appointment of the electoral reform service (ERS) for online ballots; the introduction of many more regional, company hosted events and the development of much closer links with some of our corporate partners and the PMI US leadership team. He is currently Sponsor of Synergy 2011, the landmark event we have planned for November 2011.

Chris is passionate about the UK Chapter, PMI and the profession at large, and with the support of the rest of the Board continues to work towards three main goals:

1. Value for money for each and every member of the UK Chapter. Ensuring that all members of the PMI UK Chapter feel that the benefits of being a member (financial or otherwise) far outweigh the membership fee.

2. Increased awareness of PMI in the UK. The Chapter should focus further on making PMI membership and certification a ‘no brainer’ for all UK Project Managers.

3. Volunteer recruitment and recognition. Volunteers are the life blood of the Chapter and deserve a huge vote of thanks from those who benefit from their hard work and commitment. The Chapter should continue to encourage ways of recognising this invaluable contribution wherever possible.

Prior to the role of President, Chris has also held the posts of Chair Midlands and North Regional Events Committee (2006-2010) and Director of Communications UK Chapter (2007-2008). He is also an Assessor for Chartered Status with the British Computer Society (BCS).

welcome from the ipm Day 2010 project manager, penny farrar

I would like to welcome all IPM Day 2010 attendees, and wish them an interesting and informative conference. I would also like to thank all the sponsors who made this conference possible – and in particular the event host, Microsoft – as well as the PMI UK Chapter Board Members, Support Office and Volunteers.

I am an experienced project and programme manager who has mainly worked outside the UK before moving to Oxford a few years ago. I have only recently become involved with PMI UK, and very much

welcome the opportunities the organisation provides for professional development and networking.

I have a diverse background, working originally as an engineer and later as an aid worker for the International Committee of the Red Cross. I have now set up my own company (OSPM Ltd.) specialising in providing project management services for scientific research projects, including for an international project looking at the genetics of autism.

Given my background, I have a strong personal interest in learning more about tools and techniques for managing complex projects. The themes of “complexity” and “complex projects”have also been the subject of many recent project management publications and seminars.

The IPM Day conference brings together experienced speakers from a range of different fields and backgrounds, to address different aspects and types of project complexity. I am looking forward to this opportunity to learn more from them, and hope that you also find their presentations useful. Have a good conference!

keynote speakers:

Nick FewingsDirector, The Colour Works International

There is nothing more complex than people and combined with the challenges of a complex change programme things can and easily do go off track. So how can you ensure your programme stays on

the rails? The foundations to success are excellent leadership, a team with a diversity of skills and knowledge, combined with an effective way of engaging with stakeholders. Nick Fewings, Director of The Colour Works International, has lead the ‘people’ aspects of global change programmes and worked with multi-national project teams working on complex programmes, to help them overcome the people-barriers to change and help them succeed. Combining his 20 years experience in change management and behavioural psychology, Nick, in his engaging and thought-provoking way, described as ‘infotainment’, will open your eyes to the potential that lies within you and your team to achieve your goals. Using a combination of real-life examples, tips and audience engagement, delegates will be provided with value-added learning that they can employ immediately to get positive results. As well as working with clients throughout the UK and abroad on change programmes, Nick is a highly-regarded keynote conference speaker and article writer for change management publications and facilitator of many change management development programmes for leaders of complex change programmes. The Colour Works is recognised as one of the leading learning and development organisations in the UK, using a colourful model of human behaviour.

Elmar KutschLecturer in Programme and Project Management, Cranfield School of Management

“To be uncertain is to be uncomfortable, but to be certain is to be ridiculous.” Chinese proverb.Being uncomfortable is both a challenge and

an opportunity for Elmar. As a passionate skydiver, his interests, both privately and professionally, revolve around management of the unexpected. Elmar’s first real exposure to the rather paradoxical world of risk management began in 1998, when he held a variety of commercial and senior management positions within the IT industry. Working for one of the biggest IT service providers, he was responsible for the successful delivery of a number of large IT services projects, including major Roll Out and Outsourcing projects. Clients included the Commerzbank, the Deutsche Börse (German Stock Exchange) and the Polizei Rheinland Pfalz (State police Rheinland Pfalz). In 2001, Elmar won a prestigious Doctoral Studentship from the ESRC to complete his PhD in Project Risk Management at the University of Bath. He served as a Lecturer in Operations Management at the University of Surrey and has been at Cranfield University since 2007. His consultancy involvement includes the delivery of Graduate Programmes and Customised Executive Development on the development of capabilities to manage uncertainty; capabilities that are in greater demand given the increased complexity that managers are now exposed to. His research interests are in concepts of Risk, Resilience and High Reliability Organisations. He still skydives!

Terry DewhurstDirector of IT Transformation, lastminute.com

As Director of IT Transformation at lastminute.com, Terry Dewhurst has driven a series of fundamental changes throughout the IT group that enable the division to deliver its portfolio components in a

highly effective manner. With support from an excellent management team, Terry is currently centralising the portfolio, programme and project management functions (together with support services) within one P3O group at lastminute.com. Having worked within IT solution delivery since starting as a developer in the early 1970s, Terry managed his first software delivery project in 1976. Since then he has spent his career either delivering change through the management of projects and programmes, effecting transformation in delivery capabilities through improvement programmes, or deploying local and pan-European PMOs. Terry has achieved this throughout a wide range of industry sectors, including financial services, telecommunications, travel, local and central government, retail and utilities. He has also introduced practice standards in IT governance, including portfolio, programme and project management, allowing organisations to unlock the value of excellence in these disciplines. Terry has recently developed a theory of “liquid project management” that explores the tensions of opposing ends of the spectrum of project control; from highly bureaucratic (solid) to highly flexible (gaseous) and attempts to take the best attributes from both and create one unified methodology (liquid).
