Compliance to Cigarette Restriction Policy in Enrekang, Indonesia Andi Zulkifli, Alimin, Ridwan, Furqan and Rahma Department of Epidemiology, Faculty of Public Health, Hasanuddin University, Indonesia Slide 2 Introduction WHO: about five millions people die per year due to tobacco. It is expected that in 2020 it could reach ten million. About 70% death associate to tobacco occured in developing countries. The Indonesian Government has not ratified Framework Convention on Tobacco Control/FCTC). Annually, it is estimated that about 427.948 death related to tobacco, that is 1.172 deaths per day on average. Enrekang, a subdistric in Indonesia, introduced a new policy on smoking restriction at village level. Slide 3 Overview of Smoking restriction policy In 2009, a village (Bone-Bone) introduced a policy regarding to tobacco restriction at village level. This policy follows the international standard that 100% tobacco free and do not provide smoking areas for active smokers However, many people within this subdistrict do not obey this policy Slide 4 Study Site Slide 5 Admistrative level in Indonesia Country : Indonesia Province : South Sulawesi District : Enrekang Sub District : Baraka Village : Bone-Bone Respondents were selected at this level Slide 6 Overview of The Sub District Contains 15 villages, include the village that implement tobacco restriction policy at village level Population : 21.058 people Male 10.621, Female 10.437 Types of occupation: Agriculture Slide 7 Research Question Do knowledge, attitude, income, socio cultural aspects and the availability of smoking restriction determine the compliance to tobacco restriction Slide 8 Methods This study was conducted as analytical observation by using a cross sectional study design. Two hundred and eighty one samples were taken by using selected randomly in a subdistrict. Data were analysed by using Chi Square test and the logistic regression test, were used to examine the relationship of the variables. Slide 15 Suggestion Socialization of the tobacco restriction policy need to be extended to other villages, Tobacco restriction policy in Bone-Bone village may be applicable to other village.
