1) Singapore River

When the Japanese Forces invaded Singapore in February 1942, peace and prosperity went downhill. Under the Japanese

occupation, Singapore was shrouded in darkness for three and a half years and its people had no way of making a living.

Quiet and unable to sing happy tunes like it once did, the lively river was now filled with tears of hardship, torture, pain

and sorrow.

Before the Pacific War, the Singapore River was a port of opportunities bustling

with countless boats carrying goods from faraway lands.

2) Storyteller

For the storyteller to begin, the audience would have to pay a fee to him. The storyteller would then light an incense stick

to indicate a start of a narrative. Just like today’s TV serial’s pay-per-view drama teasers, a burned off incense stick

indicates the ending of the first part of a story. With the audience itching for a continuation, they would then fork out more

money for the storyteller to light the second incense stick.

In the early days of Singapore, Storytelling was once a common form of street

entertainment among the migrant workers.

3) Clock Tower

In the past, the bells of the clock tower would chime a few times during the day. Slow and melodious, it rang brightly to

listeners walking along the river. The chimes sound distinctly different as people walk away from the direction of the bells.

With the sun setting in the horizon, listening to the bells go off in the evening gives strollers a feeling of peace and

grandeur.

With its round-shaped roof and a pointed edge at the top, the clock tower located at the

other end of Cavenagh Bridge resembles a crown.
