WHAT IS IT AND WHY?
The reflective reading journal is a tool for students to reflect upon their reading and a new opportunity for senior parents to actively engage with their children and reading, with licence to do it.

The RRJ is expected to be at school every Monday. During the week it can stay at home or inside the home communication bag.
Reading logs will be pasted in every Monday.
Teacher selected texts/activities will be given every Monday with the expectation of it being completed within the week. It is up to families to negotiate when this can be done.
There will always be a reflection/activity to accompany the teacher selected text

Each week will be a double journal entry, with the reading log and reflection.

It is our aim to break down some of the following barriers held within the mindset of a senior student.....
I am too old to read aloud to someone else.
I am too old to be read to...
I am too old to share thoughts, opinions and feelings about reading and the world around us with my parents.

I am too old to read with someone else and to discuss our reading.
Picture story books are only for little children.
I am only reading if it is a novel in my hands
I only have to read if someone makes me.
Reading once or twice a week is adequate.

RECOGNITION AND FEEDBACK
Student journals need to be signed by all three parties involved...student, parent and teacher.
Students will be given feedback and recognition for their efforts by their teacher and we encourage you to do the same.

RECOGNITION AND FEEDBACK
Students will be recognised for their best efforts with a certificate pasted in when they reach 500 minutes, 1000 minutes and beyond.
These will be calculated each term.

CONSEQUENCES
If students are not adhering to set requirements, they will receive a reminder certificate, pasted into their journal.
If this is a reoccurring issue, parents will be personally contacted to attempt to rectify the situation.
Please know that we understand family life and that the occasional missed night of reading is human and students/families need only communicate with us if assistance is required.

In the senior school we focus on 12 reading strategies to assist and improve student reading. Students are assessed using these strategies regularly.
