WELCOME BACK STUDENTS!

The new 2013-1014 school year started with so much anticipation as students poured out of busses and onto what had been a sleepy campus all summer. It didn’t take long for the campus to come alive, buzzing with the excitement of the new year. The school has grown notably from last year and is only expected to continue growing. Just to compare, take a look at our First Day of School numbers from previous years:

Year 1 - August 24, 2011 we opened with 44 students and 22 faculty and staff.

Year 2 - August 15, 2012 we opened with 96 students and 33 faculty and staff.Year 3 - August 14, 2013 we opened with 140 students from 19 countries, including Vietnam.

Pictures in numerical order: 1. School Buses unload some pretty happy kids; 2. New Reception student asking Ms. Cady where to go on the first day; 3. By lunch time, it is all smiles with new friends; 4. Grade 5 goes around the room to make introductions to get to know each other. 5. Students are welcomed by the head of School, Steve Winkelman, and then pose for an all school photo at the first assembly of the school year.

Even the upper school Concordia faculty get in on the fun!

ELEMENTS OF COMMUNITY

Our Concordia Middle School and High School students are looking a little stranger this year. Whether it was too much time at the beach in sun that bleached their hair or the stress of not being at school all summer but it seems as if their hair has totally gone white!

No fear, says the Upper School teachers, as these students are just “mopping” up all kinds of knowledge this year as they dive into their new theme, based around the periodic table of elements. When each student first arrived at Concordia, they were asked to provide ideas as to what are elements of a community and how as individuals, they help form that community.

As the school year progresses, keep an eye on the Concordia upper school students as they look at how their own personality and individual talents interact with other elements at the school and of course, as they mop it all that great information up!

PEEK AT PRESCHOOL

Hee Won has far too much fun on the playground

Nico shows off his artistic talent

“Seo Eun,, I think your mom is calling...” Se Yeon giggles.

Mrs. Elliott reads for story time.

WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR? Mary-Jane Elliot, Head Preschool Teacher

“Well, the fact that 9 out of the 11 children I have this year are returning students, is fantastic. The English that many of the non-native speakers learned last year has really been retained over the summer, which meant that we were able to dive into some really great activities right away. Of course, it is always wonderful to see old students again as well!”

The whole class takes time to pose for a silly picture.

FREE DRESS DAY - CELEBRATION CLOTHESIn celebration of the Mid-Autumn festival on September 19, students can choose to wear “celebration clothes” to school instead of their uniform. Students will have a chance to see a Lion Dance performance by professional dancers! Because we will have a costume day for our Fall Carnival, we ask that students do not wear ‘Halloween’ style costumes on this day.

NEW PARENT WELCOME COFFEESeptember 20 at 10am. All parents are invited to a special PSO coffee morning to welcome our new families to Concordia this year. We will have a special welcome gift for new families, so make sure you don’t miss out! The coffee morning will be held at the Head of School Residence in Ciputra. Specific address information and more details to follow in the next weekly update.
