(BaHons) Project | Structure, technology and environmental assessments. Exhibition and extensive design report. As an outsider from the city it is very easy to be under the impression that the creative industry within Berlin is well catered. However these outlets attend to a very small percentage, usually consisting of the already established, rich or commercial artists. The extreme divisions of this market place make it diffi cult for beginners and young talent to establish themselves. A common problem is the limitations on presentation and exposure that is needed to succeed. Marketing, publicity and exhibition of the product are vital to its success. In relation to this my proposal is to encourage new talent on a public platform, to create a building that will assist in the recognition and exhibition of ideas, music and performance. An advert or billboard designed to attract people in the creative industry to explore, discover and invest in future talent and creation. The proposal will act as an experimental hub for Berlin within a unique venue, ever-changing and accommodating various displays.

DESIGN DIRECTION

Independent design direction - Senior DesignerI have worked on design direction with various clients in design and retail sectors, on exhibition, interiors and product design. Most recently a showroom fi t out in London for an interiors specialists, along with product direction. I have worked alongside fashion label RUEDI to showcase their garments during fashion week and other event’s, including temporary retail spaces, exhibitions and runway design. In October I showcased the work of a bespoke cabinet maker at the NEC exhibition Birmingham and Excel London. My experience in creative direction has been diverse in producing design work ranging from brand concepts, packaging design, interiors and exhibition. This small scale, fast paced work has given me excellent experience in management of people, time frames, budget, sourcing and project direction. For a portfolio or sample of design direction work please get in touch.

MERCHANT

Merchant Hotel phase 2 extension | Junior Designer. The Merchant recently went through a refurbishment and conservation of the Grade 1 listed Ulster Bank space (1867) and neighboring Grade 1 listed Ulster buildings (1869) to luxury hotel accommodation. The project involved removal of unnecessary partition walling and careful restoration of the historic building fabric. This magnifi cent building is the hub of the city’s Cathedral Quarter, and has been recognized by the RICS and Civic Trust for its contribution to the regeneration of the city. The hotel recently underwent its second phase extension with prominent frontages to both Skipper Street and High Street. The extension comprises additional bedrooms, business academy, public bar, and contemporary spa facilities. Secret gardens, roof top splendor and intricate art deco external detailing.

CONDITION

(DipArch) Project | Structure, technology and environmental assessments. Exhibition and extensive design report. Technological advances in industry have always relied on craft production techniques to explore methods of making; these are replicated through the use of machinery and digital programming to improve speed and precision which is eradicating the need for human interaction and removing individuality or personalization. So as this industry continues to dominate in a global economy of consumer culture by mainstream manufacturing, it might be assumed that craft skill is being eradicated in the process. So, how can craft continue as an important contributor to the economy as conventional craft opportunities diminish and we move into a digital age? This new virtual or digital method of working presents crafts with liberating opportunities, highly relevant to an emerging post-industrial culture of customization and individualism. The intention of the building is to unite the relationships between craft and new technologies, infl uence contemporary industry and expand the limitations of craft and the possibilities of technology.

DUNDEE

(BArch) Project | Structure, technology and environmental study.Situated on Perth Road Dundee the Ideas store was the basis of this regeneration project. The main street frontage lies low and is set back from its neighboring buildings, as you approach the open tunnel entrance fi lters people off the street to arrive at the base of the tilted tower. This will act as a new reference point within the city as you approach Dundee over the River Tay bridge. On each level the tower’s split expands revealing more of Dundee’s scenery. Glimpses of the River Tay are revealed as you embark up the tower. Each level is dedicated to a specifi c type of community need. The building aims to kick start the regeneration of Perth Road, giving residents a place they can be proud of and call their own.

EDENAMOHILL

Refurbishment and extension of derelict cottage - Senior designer. The cottage itself is simple and modest, with a very special charm. It sits nestled into the side of a hill and is dwarfed and sheltered by a gathering of towering trees and natural hedges. It has been priority to minimize the impact at the interface between the cottage and the two proposed extensions. In extending this has been achieved with the use of a pane of vertical glazing at the interface between old and new which neatly disconnects. We have tried to utilize materials like timber cladding and glazing that contrast but do not prioritize over the existing building materials. This project seeks to work with the rich historic character of the cottage and to respectfully repair the existing with a light handed approach, retaining as much of the original fabric and the irreplaceable patina of age as possible, at the same time providing a house more suited to modern living.

FINNEBROGUE

New build private residence - Senior designer.Finnebrogue is located in Downpatrick, Ireland. The site extends across the side of Ringmore hill, looking over the forest and beyond Ringmore bay. Extremely open to the surrounding landscape yet on approach tucked neatly behind a hill. The site holds planning permission for a replacement dwelling and at present design proposals and ideas are being considered by the client. Concept diagrams, models and renderings were generated to discuss orientation and positioning. Within this project there was extensive research into landscape architecture. The grounds of this home were transformed to create valleys and hills with miles of meandering routes from the already mature landscape.

HILL STREET

Mixed use development - Senior Designer.3 Hill Street is a vacant site in Belfast’s historic Cathedral Quarter. This area of Belfast is popular for its trendy bars and shops, closely situated beside the Merchant Hotel and squeezed between a restaurant and independent studio space. The site leads off down a narrow cobbled street and is backed onto a listed warehouse at its rear. The intension for this mixed use development was to provide inner city living in a simple, contemporary space. The rear warehouse is to be incorporated into the proposal and stripped to expose its listed structure and become an open restaurant garden.

PROFILE

I am an extremely focused and highly motivated person with passion for design and detail. In both my academic and years of professional experience I have been complimented on my commitment and ability to produce results. A graduate of ECA (Edinburgh College of art) and ESALA (Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture) achieving a Dip (Arch), awarded a First Class Honours in my BA and recipient of the Andrew Grant Bequest Award for design excellence. My experience during and post architectural education has been purposely varied, allowing me to engage with many design disciplines, from architecture, product and furniture development through to exhibition, temporary structure and retail design. I have worked within and collaborated with studios involved in contemporary intervention, competition design, exhibition, one off residential and furniture.

This wide spectrum of industry has given me great practical experience and focus, broadening my skill set and progressing my individual design development. I use a variety of medium to convey design concepts, drawing packages and models, continually experimenting with 3d visuals, materiality and presentation methods to deliver concise schemes. I try and use every new project as an opportunity to research and experiment with new technologies and methods. Practical experience and studio led teaching has enabled me to develop strong graphic and verbal communication together with the ability to listen, discuss and create as part of a team.
