Plant Life

Certain types of plants are used to living in certain types of conditions. What does this mean?Conditions in this lesson refer to the state in the atmosphere in which plants live. For example, heat, cold, rain, dryness, wind, and ice.

So what kind of conditions can plants live in? Do you think they can live with and without rain? How about in the ice or in the dry desert? Do you think plants can live where there is very heavy winds? Do you think plants can live when it is very cold or very hot? Let’s find out!!

Everything that is living needs a home. A plant is a living thing. Plants grow. They need water, sunlight and soil to live and grow properly. For a plant to grow like it is supposed to it needs to live where they can get what they need.

Because there are many different kinds of plants they grow in many different places. The place that a plant lives in is called a habitat. There are many different types of habitats that make a home for plants.

Some plants grow in the hot, dry desert. The desert is a habitat. These plants do not need as much water as other types of plants. Some plants grow in forests or caves that get very little sunlight. This is a special home just made for these types of plants.

Did you know that some plants even grow in water? They grow in lakes, rivers and even the ocean. Take a look around where you live. What type of plants do you see? Is there grass? Trees and flowers? Weeds?

So how do plants survive in the dessert? We know plants need a lot of water and the desert is very dry. These plants survive by quickly soaking in water whenever it rains and storing it so that it can live off of it until the next rain! Pretty cool, right?

Not all plants are able to survive in these hot and dry conditions. Most plants need normal weather, temperature, and water to survive. If you dropped off a house plant in the desert, it would probably die very quickly. All plants need different things.

Winter PlantsHave you noticed that in the winter, when it is very cold and sometimes there is ice on the ground, that most of the plants look like they die? That is because most plants can not live in such cold conditions.

During the winter season there is less time in the day where there is sunlight. Sunlight is very important for plants. Since there is less sunlight it is hard for the plants to survive. If it is too cold the plants can freeze and die. Most plants just can’t survive this season!!

Winter PlantsSome plants can live in these conditions. Most of the plants that can survive the winter are called perennials. Most shrubs are perennials and coniferous trees are also perennials.

Water Plants

We all know that most plants need a lot of water to survive. Do you think that plants can have too much water?

Yes! Plants can have too much water. It is like their roots can’t keep up with the water and the plant drowns. So do you think plants could live in water?

Yes!! In fact, some plants can live in water. There are actually a lot of plants that live in our oceans, ponds, and lakes.

There are two main categories of plants that can survive in the ocean. One is plants that have roots and the other is plants without roots. The plants with roots still need sunlight so they live in shallow water. The plants without roots are very tiny and just float around in the water.

Think of a hurricane. Have you ever seen a hurricane where you live or on TV? Hurricanes have very strong winds. Sometimes the wind can snap a tree in half, pull plants out of the ground, or even tear them apart. Strong winds can be very dangerous for even some of the strongest plants.
