Maintaining an appropriate strategy for venturing with physicians is never clear cut – particularly in the changing regulatory tides. With pressure mounting at CMS and in the legislature to limit physician ownership and involve-ment in healthcare facilities and services, it is arguably more important than ever to reevaluate hospital-physician ventures and rebalance your strategy based on anticipated future guidelines. This panel will discuss new twists to approaching hospital/physician joint ventures for outpatient services in the current climate and provide practical advice for strategizing and implementing forward-looking ventures.

Physician employment continues to be a major strategic initiative – and challenge – for hospitals. Increasingly, hospitals are recruiting physicians and offering direct employment arrangements. Recent data from a national physician recruitment firm indicates that 43% of physician searches in 2006/07 were at the request of hospitals; up from just 19% in 2004/05. While this strategy is enabling hospitals to meet community and service line needs, it also creates new challenges. Primarily, how to organize and govern hospital employed physicians. Presenters will impart a comprehensive understanding of the critical issues, strategies for addressing these issues, and key success factors for building a strong physician governance structure.
