It is a great pleasure and an honor to extend to you a warm welcome to The Annual Conference

on Engineering and Applied Science.

Fukuoka is an exceptional location for the conference. Fukuoka is an easy place to visit—it is

connected closely to all major airports of Japan, and has direct flights to Seoul, Dalian, Shanghai,

Hong Kong, Taipei, Singapore, and Honolulu. Fukuoka Airport (福岡空港, Fukuoka Kūkō) is

the fourth busiest airport in Japan. Reached in just five minutes by subway from Hakata Station,

it is also one of the most centrally located airports in the country.

Fukuoka was the very first place in Japan that received people from the continent in the first

century, and still its local people are lively and kind. Its seafood is often considered the best in

Japan.

Fukuoka is one of the oldest places of Japan with very modern parts. Fukuoka city and its

neighborhood have many attractive places to visit. On Wednesday, we will have a socializing

tour as well. We hope you will join us and take a little extra time to enjoy the spectacular and

unique beauty of this region.

A Polite Request to All Participants

Participants are requested to arrive in a timely fashion for all addresses. Presenters are reminded

that the time slots should be divided fairly and equally by the number of presentations, and that

they should not overrun. The session chair is asked to assume this timekeeping role and to

summarize key issues in each topic.

Certificate

Certificate of Presentation or Certificate of Attendance

A certificate of attendance includes participant’s name and affiliation, certifying the participation

in the conference. A certificate of presentation indicates a presenter’s name, affiliation and the

paper title that is presented in the scheduled session.

Certificate Distribution

Oral presenters will receive a certificate of presentation from the session chair after their

presentations or at the end of the session. Poster presenters will receive a certificate of

presentation from the conference staff at the end of their poster session.

The certificate of presentation will not be issued, either at or after the conference, to authors

whose papers are registered but not presented. Instead, the certificate of attendance will be

provided after the conference.

Preparation for Oral Presentations

All presentation rooms are equipped with a screen, an LCD projector, and a laptop computer

installed with Microsoft PowerPoint. You will be able to insert your USB flash drive into the

computer and double check your file in PowerPoint. We recommend you to bring two copies of

the file in case that one fails. You may also connect your own laptop to the provided projector;

however please ensure you have the requisite connector.

Topic: Production of Bacterial Cellulose and Its

Summary of Keynote Speech

Bacterial cellulose (BC), produced by microorganisms such as Komagataeibacter xylinus, is used

in wound healing applications due to its material properties, including the ability to maintain

high-water content and good biocompatibility. Moreover, BC also presents regular network

structure (typical crystalline form of cellulose Iα), which provides flexible material property and

high strength. Numerous BC dressing studies are being investigated to improve wound healing

characteristics through usage of different cultivation systems and surface modification of BC.

Development of an ideal wound dressing to efficiently improve wound healing process is an

important issue in wound care. The present study aims to cross-link dextran with bacterial

cellulose (BC) to form a dextran/BC hydrogel, and to evaluate the performance of

dextran-modified BC hydrogel in a mouse model. This is the first report to apply dextran/BC

hydrogel as wound dressing. Our results indicated that the modified dressing - dextran/BC

hydrogel - appears to contain a high-water content, rigid but flexible material properties, fine cell

proliferation with non-cytotoxicity at the cell-based level, and excellent wound healing ability in

vivo. The added dextran plays a key role in that it promotes fibroblast cell growth in the

proliferation stage and also help skin maturation in the remodeling stage, causing the

acceleration of the wound healing process. It is important to note that this is superior to the

commercial wound dressings. Human studies are needed to further investigate the applications as

a therapy for different types of wounds.

Students:What Higher Education Faculty Can Do to

Prepare Students for Professional Life

Summary of Keynote Speech

Faculty in accredited teacher preparation programs in the United States are tasked with teaching

and assessing the professional dispositions of pre-service teachers. In 2001, the National Council

for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) defined professional dispositions as

“values, commitments, and professional ethics that influence practices and behaviors toward

students, families, colleagues, and communities and affect student learning, motivation, and

development as well as the educator’s own professional growth” (p.30). Pre-service teachers

enrolled in accredited teacher preparation programs in the United States must demonstrate these

positive behaviors to successfully complete their programs.

Requiring professional dispositions as part of teacher preparation has not been without

controversy (Burko, Liston, & Whitcomb, 2007; Villegas, 2007). However, there is a growing

body of research that suggests professional dispositions can be taught (Cosgrove & Carpenter,

2012; Marchel, Shields, & Winter, 2011) and are important to the development of effective

teachers (Cummins & Asempapa, 2013; Masunaga & Lewis, 2011).

Although the specific responsibilities of teacher preparation faculty may differ, individual

faculty have many opportunities, in their various capacities, to teach, model, and support

pre-service teacher development of these important professional attributes. In this speech, the

presenter will discuss various ways faculty can support learning and development of the

professional dispositions among pre-service teachers. In addition, the discussion will be extended

to include faculty from other disciplines by giving participants opportunities to discuss ways they

address professional dispositions in their respective fields of study.

Brief Introduction of Associate Dr. Linda Oshita

Dr. Linda Oshita is an Associate Specialist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is

currently serving as Chair and Faculty Advisor of the Post-Baccalaureate in Special Education

Program, a teacher preparation program in the Department of Special Education. Dr. Oshita has

written papers on the topic of advising students in higher education. She has also presented at

professional conferences in Australia, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, and the United States.

Her research interests include: Advising issues in higher education and special education teacher

preparation.
