Understanding physical literacy allows us to train people to enhance performance and reduce in-jury in sport, recreation, performance arts and voca-tion. This session will describe physical literacy and assessment tools, as well as highlight key research findings from high performance circus to daily PE. You will walk away with new knowledge, tools and and an novel approach.

Embracing the Uniqueness of YOU! Joyce SunadaWe all have many gifts and talents that make us unique and valuable professionals. Our individual services are not a one size fits all solution, but are as varied as the clients who require them. In this interactive session participants will identify their strengths, explore how to maximize them and net-work with colleagues to empower one another.

Movement Variability-Training the Human Software Anthony CareyThe human body has enormous resources for completing the same fundamental tasks with huge amounts of variability. New research is emerging showing that traditional learning models of repeti-tion may not produce the best learning results. Pro-viding variable input and output with our software can equate to more real world learning

2014 PERSPECTIVES CONFERENCE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 7

2014 PERSPECTIVES CONFERENCE FRIDAY NOVEMBER 7, CONT’D

Personal Training and the Older Adult Client Anthony CareyCurrently one of the greatest threats to the lifestyle of adults over the age of forty is osteoarthritis (OA) of the hip, knee and spine. In this session we will discuss the pathophysiology and latest research in spinal conditions such as spinal stenosis, degenera-tive joint disease (DJD), osteoporosis and others and their relationship to pain and disability. We will introduce exercise strategies and protocols to opti-mize spinal mobility and function in this client popu-lation.

Anaerobic Conditioning to the Max Len KravitzJoin Len for a multimedia comprehensive review of the metabolic and physiological processes that drive physical exercise and athletic performance. Scien-tific studies will be presented showing how the body adapts to anaerobic training. Several myths and misconceptions about anaerobic fat burning, muscle acidosis, metabolic stress, extreme conditioning, metabolic fatigue and substrate utilization will be presented. Every personal trainer will leave with EIGHT evidence-based anaerobic training circuit programs (each circuit with 5 exercises). Don’t miss this lecture!

6:00 pm Opening Night Reception

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8

8:30 am - 9:30 amPerspectives Plenary: Lessons learned from the 2014 Olympics and BeyondSteve Norris As a main hub of Canada’s Winter Olympic Ath-letes, Winsport, together with the Canadian Sport Institute Calgary is continuously testing new limits in the quest for Gold. In this session Dr. Stephen Norris will; share his insights on Winsport’s journey to becoming a world leading Winter Sport Institute, discuss how Winsport contributed to the success of Canada’s Winter Olympic Athletes at the 2014 Sochi Olympics and a provide a glimpse into the future of winter sport in Canada.

10:00 am – 11:00 amAthletes Nutrition Fads – The Registered Dietitians Perspective Kelly Anne ErdmanPerforming at your best on the World’s sporting stage – i.e, the Olympics, requires that everything is in place. Physiological peaking, equipment, technol-ogy, mental focus, optimal health and high perfor-mance nutrition are some of the key elements for success. This session will address how the Cana-dian Olympic Committee’s Performance Dietitian planned and executed personalized nutrition sup-port to fuel Canadian Olympic performances at the London 2012 and Sochi 2014 Games as well as the 2011 Pan American Games. Catering to unique dietary trends (gluten free, paleo diet, etc.) followed by athletes in these Games will also be described.

Corrective Exercise Evaluation of Leading Practice Lorraine GlassThe rise and recognition of corrective exercise training as a viable method of pain management,

2014 PERSPECTIVES PRE-CONFERENCE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8

pain reduction and/or movement improvement is supported with research literature and of course, anecdotal findings. There are a number of certifications, mentorships and courses de-veloped, promoted and preached as being the ‘best’ method of practice. For the newcomer to corrective exercise, either as a client or a trainer, understanding what to look for can be confusing. This workshop will highlight some fundamental properties to look for in a corrective exercise practice and some common denominators that a corrective exercise trainer should possess.

Stability? Mobility? Or Disability? Anthony Carey How the body handles the forces that act on its joints is key to safety and maximum perfor-mance. Cumulative low-grade stress or abrupt high impact stress on joints can both lead to client injuries. Systematic progressions based on an understanding of our stability “systems” and the mechanisms that control those systems should be the goal of every fitness professionals.

The Physiology of High Intensity Interval Exercise Len KravitzThe emerging research examining high-intensity intermittent exercise indicates numerous benefits for cardiovascular health, fat loss, prevention of obesity, insulin resistance and cardiovascu-lar performance. The physiological, metabolic, skeletal and biological mechanisms underlying all of these responses and adaptations will be discussed and explained. EIGHT fabulous high intensity interval training programs from research studies will be presented. A must attend session for all champions of HIIT training.

11:15 am – 12:15 pm Understanding and Managing RiskTanya SinclairThere are different ways to mitigate risk, first you need understand what your risks are, how to man-age them individually and corporately. As trained, educated, certified professionals, what risks do you need to be aware of? Where are you liable and where are you vulnerable? The purpose of this presentation is to help understand ways to properly manage or mitigate your risk as an exercie profes-sional. We will look at contracts, handling claims, allegations and having all the proper requirements in place. Movement Screens and Assessments Matt JordanMovement screens and movement assessments are commonly used in the fitness and sport training in-dustries. However, the relevance for injury preven-tion and sport performance are unclear. The pur-pose of this seminar is to provide a critical appraisal of movement screens and movement assessments, and to provide a rationale for their use with athletes and members of the general public.

Regress to Progress for Functional Success Anthony CareyFunctional training trends have unleashed a surge in inappropriate applications and exercise progres-sions. Understanding that we can “regress” our exercises to allow clients to be successful, will allow us to build a more stable foundation for individual client development.

CS4L and the Exercise Professionals Role: Your live work and play cultureVicki HarberThe term “culture” describes the pattern of shared values and beliefs that lead to certain norms of

behaviour. It is sometimes described as “the way we do things around here”. Every workplace, ev-ery home, every play space has a culture and this culture can be managed. This talk will describe how culture is values-driven and that our values are expressed through your words, actions and habits. You will be encouraged to examine your own live, work and play culture and target potential area to strengthen.

1:45 pm - 2:45 pmFantastic Facilitation Joyce Sunada As an exercise professional you need to share im-portant information with your clients and you want to do so in a fun and interactive way. Join Joyce as she models a variety of facilitation strategies and leaves you with tools that will improve your skills and enhance your presentations.

Strength and Power training for Endurance Sports Matt JordanStrength and power training for endurance athletes remains a challenge for coaches and exercise sci-entists. Yet, strength and power training can have a profoundly positive effect on endurance perfor-mance. The purpose of this seminar is to provide a scientific and practical framework for designing strength and power programs for the endurance athlete.

Health Focus Panel: Exercise Engagement and Health Challenges Teresa Krahn, Dave Smith Join this panel discussion on two unique perspec-tives and approaches to exercise prescription for individuals with health challenges. The panel focus is on strategies/research and on-the-ground infor-mation that will support our work with our health-challenged clients.

will also showcase 20 fabulous ‘think different be different’ exercise ideas throughout this presentation. This multi-media presentation will inspire, stimulate and fascinate.

Sedentary Behaviour and Exercise Consultation Christina LoitzIs sitting really the New Smoking? Even For Runners? The media has been covering the health risks associated with sedentary behavior over the last year. This presentation will review the controversial research suggesting sedentary behaviour negatively impacts health, despite meeting the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines and being physically fit. Practical strategies to counsel your clients about their sedentary behaviour will be discussed.

Health Focus Panel: Strategies in MotivationDave Paskevich, Nicole Culos-Reed, Jane Stewart This health focus panel will discuss some of the strategies used to motivate specific client groups to the next level. Recognizing our delegates are in contact with clients acros the health spectrum, pan-elists will present strategies/research that will help delegates work successfully with• Clients with chronic disease• Cancer survivors• Elite athletes

6:00 pm Perspectives Reception / Banquet

Participants will learn, from a cellular perspective the newest research on the hormonal regulation of lipolysis during exercise, the effect of exercise on lipolysis, the effect of exercise on fat oxidation, the effect of glycemic index on fat metabolism, effective exercises intensities for fat loss, and strategies to enhance caloric expenditure with exercise. TEN (yes, 10) groundbreaking exercise programs that maximize caloric expenditure and fat metabolism will be presented. A must attend lecture for the fitness professional and personal trainer who truly wishes to understand and apply the physiology of fat metabolism.

3:00 pm – 4:00 pmImproving Group DynamicsJayne TakahashiWherever you are working, whether it be for someone else or you run your own business, you rely on others to help you in your job. Often the greatest areas of concern and sources of energy drain have to do with the group dynamics around you. In this session, we’ll discuss the management of inter-generational teams, diversity in the workplace, and pro-active performance and talent reviews.

Exerciser: The Ultimate Brain Booster and Stress Reducer Len KravitzJoin Len Kravitz in an incredible educational journey documenting the neurophysiological and mental health benefits of exercise. A highlight of this presentation is a research update on how exercise professionals can help clients alleviate stress and anxiety. A new section on working with clients with PTSD is included. Another special section discusses how exercise professionals can help clients enjoy a happier life through lifestyle interventions. Len

2014 PERSPECTIVES PRE-CONFERENCE SATURDAY NOVEMBER 8

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 9

8:30 am - 9:30 amChampionship TeachingLen KravitzGreat teachers are not born, they are developed. This evidence-based, dynamic lecture address all of the variables and factors in teaching and communi-cating that will enhance your ability to help clients and students. Learn the best ways to deliver posi-tive feedback, deal with many teaching situations, improve communication and eventually become a championship teacher and personal trainer. A must presentation for all professionals who teach people.

Building a Team of “A” PlayersJayne TakahashiTypically, when we hire new team members or when we assess current employees, we focus on WHAT they do and HOW they do their jobs. Do you ever consider WHO you want on your team and how individuals fit not only with a required skill set but more importantly how they fit with the culture of your workplace. Can you define the culture of your workplace and are you selecting employees accord-ingly? In this session, we will look at the power of establishing core values for your workplace and the implementation of a useful scorecard system to help you find team members who are a good fit from the start. These same tools make it easier for team members to provide professional feedback to each other rather than stir personal animosities.

Physical Literacy: Are We Missing The Vaccine for Injury?Brandy TanenbaumPhysical literacy is directly linked to a number of positive health outcomes including falls reduction, prevention of overuse injuries and chronic condi-tions related to physical inactivity. Reducing injury risk is a multi-faceted process involving active and passive approaches that interrupt and stop, or lessen the severity, along the path of injury. When safety is seen as a process, not an outcome, the

2014 PERSPECTIVES CONFERENCE SUNDAY NOVEMBER 9

inevitability of injury as an acceptable part of the sport experience becomes unacceptable. Used in a nonspecific manner, the words “safe” and “safety” are potentially misleading, creating a false sense of action and protection. Is a “safe” sport expected to be absent of injury or injury risk? If so, is this a realistic (or even desired) outcome for an organiza-tion to deliver? If not, what are the criteria for safe participation? This presentation will review injury prevention strategies in the context of sport and recreation programs while engaging the audience in an effort to define safety for fitness professionals. Muscle testing, unpluggedScott MorrisThis session will look at case studies of different conditions, what tests can be used in both strength and posture, and discuss what can be done to as-sist them.

9:45 am - 10:45 amPerspectives in Exercise Health and Fitness Presenter Panel Join the Perspectives Conference presenters as they share their ideas about the future if exercise, health and fitness as it relates their areas of ex-pertise. This is a unique opportunity to talk about perspectives in exercise health and fitness with industry and thought leaders.

11:00 am – 12:00 pmThe Sports GeneDavid EpsteinAre stars like Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Sere-na Williams genetic freaks put on Earth to dominate their respective sports? Or are they simply normal people who overcame their biological limits through sheer force of will and obsessive training? In the de-cade since the sequencing of the human genome, researchers have slowly begun to uncover how the relationship between biological endowments and a competitor’s training environment affects athleti-cism. Based on his bestselling book The Sports Gene: Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance, David Epstein tackles the great nature vs. nurture debate and traces how far science has come in solving this timeless riddle.

pursuits. His thought-provoking speeches will alter the perception of how and why athletes train through learned performance in addition to how coaches develop the people they lead. The wisdom Epstein shares on brain sports science and finding and maxi-mizing one’s hidden talents produces lessons appli-cable to businesses, colleges, healthcare institutions and anyone following their passion to achieve per-sonal and professional success.

The Sports Gene has been publicly purchased by President Obama and Condoleezza Rice publicly announced reading the book; published in over a dozen countries and it has received notable attention; recently being recognized as: one of the best books of 2013 for entrepreneurs by Inc. magazine; one of the top five sports books of 2013 by Business Insider Australia; one of Publishers Weekly’s best books of 2013; a notable nonfiction book of 2013 by Washing-ton Post; Runner’s World 2013 book of the year; and a William Hill Sports Book of the Year finalist. Also, Epstein discussed hacking the human body via tech-nology and sports science at TED 2014, which was called one of the best TED talks of the year by many audience members, has over 1 million video views so far and was named one of Prezi’s Top 100 online resources for presenters and a Prezi staff favorite.
